Family homes in Schilderswijk and Transvaal
The Hague’s Schilderswijk and Transvaal districts have large Turkish and Moroccan communities. Homes in the city are largely apartments and portiek flats.
In a flat, the sitting room has to serve the household all week and the wider family at the weekend. Seating along the walls does both. It lines one or two walls, seats more people than a sofa on the same footprint, and leaves the middle of the room open.

Majlis and floor sofa layouts for a flat
A flat rarely offers three free walls, so the U-shape is the exception. Work from what the room gives you.
- One free wall: a single row. With an ottoman and a rug, it is a complete sitting area.
- A corner away from the door: an L-shape, as in the navy and cream floor sofa pictured above.
- A separate room for guests: a U-shape, with the open side facing the door.

What the set is made of
The cushions are filled with 32 kg/m³ (32 DNS) polyurethane foam and have no springs. The figure is a density: it describes how much material is in the foam, and denser foam generally holds its shape longer. Firmness is chosen separately, and custom orders can ask for a softer or harder seat.
