The first question in Amsterdam is rarely about fabric. It is whether the thing will go up the stairs. People who search for a majlis sofa in Amsterdam usually have one of two Sofhu products in mind. The Arabic floor sofa is a low set of loose cushions at floor level, and it has an advantage on the stairs that a conventional corner sofa does not: it comes as separate pieces. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height and built as upholstered units with fixed backs. Sofhu makes each set in Türkiye to the wall lengths you send and ships it free to Amsterdam. For the national picture, see Arabic sofa in Holland.
Steep stairs and why modular seating helps
Amsterdam’s steep stairs are well known, and large furniture is often hoisted through a window. A floor sofa avoids most of that. The longest single piece is a seat cushion, and Sofhu vacuum packs its sets for transport, so the parcels are smaller again than the finished cushions.
Three things to tell Sofhu with your measurements:
- the width of the stair and of the narrowest door
- whether there is a lift
- whether you want a raised majlis or wooden-frame pieces, which are rigid
A floor sofa also needs a wall behind it, since its back cushions are not freestanding. Plan along walls and into corners.

Moroccan sofa, Turkish sedir or Arabic majlis
Amsterdam’s Moroccan and Turkish communities are concentrated in Nieuw-West, in Slotervaart and Osdorp, and in parts of Oost and West. Dutch-Moroccan homes often have a made-to-order Moroccan lounge, the Marokkaanse bank or sedari, and it is an established product here.
It helps to be exact about how these relate.
| Tradition | Seat height | Typical form |
|---|---|---|
| Moroccan sedari | Bench height, on a wooden base | Runs along most walls, with a central round table |
| Turkish şark köşesi | Low base or floor | An L-shaped corner in kilim-pattern fabric |
| Arabic floor sofa | Floor level | Seat mattresses and loose back cushions around the walls |
| Arabic majlis | Sofa height | Upholstered units with fixed backs lining the walls |
Sofhu makes the last two. The floor sofa is the low one shown in the photos on this page, and the majlis comes closer to the sedari in seat height. If you want a Moroccan lounge in every detail, read the Moroccan sedari page first so you know what to ask for. Turkish families will recognise the kilim-pattern corner sets from the Turkish sedir tradition. The comparison of Yemeni, Saudi and Moroccan majlis shows the differences side by side.
Floor-level or raised
Seat height changes how the room is used. Floor-level seating is relaxed and leaves low windows clear. A raised seat is easier on the knees and works with a dining-height or coffee-height table. You can also mix the two: a raised run for elders and a floor-level run for everyone else.
Sofhu makes floor sofas with cushions in different thicknesses, and the raised majlis as a separate product. It does not publish fixed heights, because sets are made to order, so describe what you want in plain terms. Our majlis seat height guide and floor seating vs raised diwan will help you decide.
Arabic floor seating in a narrow living room
If your living room is long and narrow, with the window at one end, two layouts suit the shape.
- A single row on the long wall, with a rug and an ottoman in front. It keeps the walking line from door to window free.
- An L-shape at the window end, turning along the long wall. It makes a sitting area at one end and leaves the other for a table.
A U-shape, like the grey and gold floor sofa at the top of this page, belongs in a room used mainly for guests, where three walls are free. More small-room plans are in a majlis in a small apartment.
