The short answer

An Arabic floor sofa is low, floor-level cushion seating: a seat mattress on the floor, loose back cushions against the wall and armrest blocks at the ends, usually with a matching ottoman and floor pillows. It is a different product from the raised, upholstered Arabic majlis. Sofhu makes floor sofas in Türkiye with 32 kg/m³ foam and washable covers, cut to your room and shipped free worldwide.

An Arabic floor sofa is low cushion seating that sits at floor level: a seat mattress on or near the floor, loose back cushions that lean on the wall, and armrest blocks at the ends, normally with a matching ottoman and floor pillows. Nothing is fixed together, so the set is easy to rearrange. With no frame or springs under you there is only the cushion, which is why buying one is mostly a decision about foam, thickness and fabric.

Majlis or floor sofa?

Sofhu makes two different products, and they are easy to confuse because older pages used one word for both. The floor sofa on this page is the low, loose-cushion set. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height and built as structured, fully upholstered units.

What an Arabic floor sofa is

An Arabic floor sofa is a mattress-style seat that lies directly on the floor, with back cushions leaning against the wall behind it and blocks for armrests. Pieces are placed end to end along the wall to make a run of any length. A complete floor sofa set often adds a rug, an ottoman and loose floor cushions in the same fabric.

The complete Gray Gold single row: seat, backrests, armrests, ottoman, rug and floor cushions in a cream room with arched niches and brass jugs.

The photograph shows the smallest complete arrangement: one seat with its back cushions and armrests, plus the rug, ottoman and floor cushions that go with it. The large floor sofa at the top of the page is the same model taken around three walls.

Two practical points apply to every set. The seating is not freestanding and needs a wall or other solid surface behind it. And because it has no legs or frame, it does not scratch floors.

Why foam density matters most on the floor

On the floor, the foam does all the work, so its density is the first number to ask for. Density is the weight of one cubic metre of foam. It measures how much material is in the cushion, and the Polyurethane Foam Association notes that higher-density foam generally retains its original properties better.

Density is not firmness. A light foam can be made to feel hard in the shop and still lose height with use. Published foam datasheets show the difference in two measures: resilience, which is how well the foam springs back, and compression set, which is how much height it permanently loses after being squeezed.

Foam classResilienceCompression set
Budget foam, 18 to 25 kg/m³30 to 35% or moreUp to 7 to 8%
32 kg/m³ furniture foam40 to 45% or moreUp to 6%
High-resilience foam, 30 to 35 kg/m³50 to 55% or moreUp to 5%

These are published values for foam grades in general, not test results for a particular sofa. They show where 32 kg/m³ sits: clearly above budget foam, and a solid furniture density without being the top of the range.

Sofhu fills its floor sofas with 32 kg/m³ foam, written 32 DNS in the Turkish trade, and uses no springs or metal in the cushions. Sofhu describes the feel as firm, and a softer or firmer foam can be requested on custom orders. For the full explanation, read what foam density is best for floor seating and the comparison of high-density foam and memory foam. Sofhu’s older article on sponge and foam quality gives more background.

Seat thickness: thin, standard or high

Thickness changes how the seat is used more than how it looks. Sofhu offers different cushion thicknesses and sets the figure with each order, so the notes below describe the choice rather than a size chart.

  • Thin seats keep the room closest to the traditional feel of sitting on rugs. They store and move easily and suit rooms where the cushions also serve as guest beds.
  • Standard seats are what most families choose for a room in daily use. They give enough depth of foam that an adult does not feel the floor.
  • High seats are easier to lower yourself onto and rise from, which helps older relatives and guests who are new to floor seating.

For context only, shop listings for floor seating sets in Jordan commonly give mattress thicknesses of about 14 to 15 cm. That is one market’s habit, not a standard and not a Sofhu specification. Tell us who will use the room and we will suggest a thickness with your quote. The majlis seat height guide and the article on whether floor seating is comfortable go further.

Layouts for Arabic floor seating

The same pieces make three layouts, and the room decides which.

The full L-shaped emerald green medallion set with ottoman, rug and three floor cushions fills the corner of a cream room with arched niches and a brass lantern.
Emerald green and cream medallion Arabic floor sofa in a U shape with rug, ottoman and floor cushions by arched niches
A complete U-shaped emerald green medallion set with ottoman, rug and floor cushions seats a large gathering in a cream room with arched niches and a brass lantern.

Along one wall. A single row is the simplest floor sofa set. It fits a narrow room, a bedroom corner or the wall opposite a television.

In a corner. An L shape uses two walls and is the usual choice for apartments. The green set on the left above shows an L with its rug and ottoman.

Around the room. A U shape uses three walls and seats the most people, with the centre left open. The same green model is shown as a U on the right.

Whichever you choose, measure each wall at floor level and note doors, low windows and radiators. A run cut to the wall has no gaps for cushions to drift into.

Fabrics for floor-level use

Floor seating meets shoes at the doorway, children, spilled tea and feet, so choose fabric for cleaning first. Every Sofhu cover is zippered and removable, and the covers can be machine washed at 30°C.

  • Velvet is durable and easy to clean, and gives the richest colour. Wash cool and do not tumble dry. See velvet floor sofas.
  • Linen is breathable and feels cool in hot weather, which suits warm climates and sunny rooms. See linen floor sofas.
  • Chenille and woven fabrics carry the kilim, sadu and medallion patterns shown on this page. Sofhu notes that its chenille sheds very little.
  • Suede-type fabrics feel warm and suit cooler months.

The guide to velvet, linen and jacquard majlis fabric compares them side by side.

Floor sofas in other traditions

Arabic floor seating has close relatives, and Sofhu makes several of them.

The full L-shaped Cream Afghan set with ottoman, rug and three floor cushions fills the corner of a cream room with arched niches and brass jugs.

The Afghan toshak is a long floor mattress used for sitting, meals and sleeping, with pillows behind it rather than a fixed backrest. The cream set above is Sofhu’s Afghan-style design with burgundy cross-stitch bands. Read about the tradition on the Afghan toshak floor seating page, or see the existing premium Afghan toshak page.

The diwan floor sofa is the thick-cushion version, sold in named models in velvet and linen. Those queries are answered on diwan floor sofas from Sofhu.

Loose Arabic floor cushions extend any set when more guests arrive, and can also be used on a wooden bench. See the floor cushion page.

Not every related tradition sits on the floor. If you are weighing the two, floor seating vs raised diwan compares comfort, space and custom honestly.

Ordering a floor sofa to size

Every set is made to the room, so the order starts with measurements.

  1. Measure each wall the seating will run along.
  2. Mark doors, windows, radiators and sockets on a simple sketch.
  3. Choose a layout, a fabric and a thickness preference, or ask for advice.
  4. Send it all through the quote by measurement form or on WhatsApp.
  5. Confirm the layout and price for your room.

The finished set is vacuum packed in sealed bags and shipped free worldwide from Türkiye. Open the bags without sharp tools and the foam begins to recover its shape once the seal is broken. Import duties or taxes may apply depending on your country, and you can ask about them before ordering. For raised, sofa-height sets, see the Arabic majlis page; for the wider guest-room tradition, continue to the Arabic jalsa page.

Questions

Before you order

What is an Arabic floor sofa called?

In Arabic, floor-level seating is jalsa ardiya, which simply means floor seating. In Levant shops the seat mattress is a farsha and the back cushion a masnad. English speakers also say floor couch, floor seating set, Arabic sofa or oriental sofa. A majlis is something else: the guest room itself and, at Sofhu, the raised upholstered set built for it.

Is floor seating comfortable for adults?

For most adults, yes, provided the seat is supportive and there is something to lean on. A firm cushion and a backrest against the wall let you sit upright or cross-legged for long periods. People who find it hard to get up from floor level usually prefer a thicker seat or one raised bench in the room.

How thick should a floor sofa cushion be?

Thick enough that you do not feel the floor when you sit down hard, which depends on the foam as much as the measurement. Thinner seats suit rooms that double as sleeping space; thicker ones are easier to rise from. Sofhu sets thickness per order, so describe who will use the room and ask for a recommendation with your quote.

Can I put an Arabic floor sofa directly on carpet or hardwood?

Yes to both. The set has no legs or hard frame, so it does not scratch wooden or tiled floors. On fitted carpet it sits securely with no preparation. On a smooth floor, a rug under the front edge of the seats helps everything stay in place and makes the room warmer underfoot.

Can an Arabic floor sofa be used for sleeping?

Many families use the seat cushions as an occasional guest bed, and in the Afghan toshak tradition the same mattress serves for sitting and sleeping. A firm seat feels different from a bed mattress, so if overnight guests are a regular use, say so when you order and ask about a softer foam.

How do I stop floor cushions from sliding?

Push the backrests firmly against the wall and fit the seats tight to them, with an armrest closing each end of the run. A rug or non-slip underlay beneath the seats stops movement on wood, laminate and tile. A set cut to the exact wall length slides far less than one with gaps at the ends.

What is the difference between a floor sofa and a toshak?

A toshak is the Afghan floor mattress: long, fairly thin, used with loose pillows behind it and often slept on. An Arabic floor sofa is a fuller set with a firm seat mattress, shaped back cushions and armrest blocks. Both belong to the floor sofa family, Sofhu makes both, and the layout options are the same.
