Picture a Rotterdam living room: a window wall at one end, a door at the other, two long plain walls between them. That room is close to ideal for a majlis sofa, because the seating runs along the walls and the plain walls are already there. Sofhu builds each set in Türkiye to the lengths you measure and ships it free to Rotterdam. It has no shop in the city, so the room plan is where the order begins.
Sofhu makes two products under this name. The Arabic majlis is raised, sofa-height seating in upholstered units with fixed backs and arm bolsters, like the beige flame-kilim corner set at the top of this page. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set at floor level with loose back cushions, an ottoman and floor pillows.
Post-war flats and portiek apartments
Much of Rotterdam’s housing is post-war flats and portiek apartments with similar room plans. Similar rooms are good news for made-to-measure seating, but they are not identical, and a few centimetres decide whether a run meets the corner cleanly. Measure your own walls and do not rely on a neighbour’s set.
| What your room has | What to order |
|---|---|
| One long free wall | Single row, full length of the wall |
| A free corner away from the door | L-shape |
| Three free walls, window wall included | U-shape, kept clear of the radiator |
| A through-room with doors on both ends | Two single rows facing each other |
Both are planned against the walls. A floor sofa in particular is not freestanding: its back cushions need a wall or another firm surface behind them. The steps are in how to measure a room for a majlis, and L-shape and U-shape layouts compares the corner plans.

Who buys an Arabic sofa in Rotterdam
Rotterdam is one of Europe’s most diverse cities, with large Turkish, Moroccan, Surinamese and Cape Verdean communities, concentrated in Rotterdam-Zuid, in Afrikaanderwijk and Feijenoord, and in Delfshaven.
For Turkish and Moroccan families, low or bench seating around the walls is a familiar idea with its own names. The Turkish version is the corner set in kilim-pattern fabric described on our Turkish sedir page. The Moroccan version is the raised sedari, which sits at bench height on a wooden base. Sofhu makes both the low floor sofa and the raised majlis, so say which you grew up with and what height you want.

The burgundy and cream kilim floor sofa above is a typical family choice: a U-shape with a matching rug and ottoman, in a pattern that hides everyday marks.
A set that survives family life
A sitting room in a family flat is used hard. Three features of a Sofhu set matter here.
- Foam. The cushions are filled with 32 kg/m³ (32 DNS) foam and contain no springs. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer than light foam.
- Covers. Every cover has a zip and comes off. Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C, as explained on its common questions page.
- Modularity. The pieces are separate, so one stained or worn cushion can be moved to a less visible place.
Dark kilim patterns and chenille are forgiving. Pale velvet is beautiful and asks for more care. Our guide to a family majlis with young children goes into fabrics, corners and washing routines.

Formal sets for guests and for community rooms
Not every order is for everyday use. Some households keep one room for guests and want it to look the part. The ivory and gold damask floor sofa above shows that end of the range, in an L-shape with a pouf and floor cushions.
Community organisations order too. A guest room beside a prayer hall or a meeting room in a cultural centre needs seating that many people can share and that can be cleaned easily. See floor seating for mosques and community centres for layouts and fabric advice.
