On this page
Ontario is the natural place to start in Canada. The province is home to a large share of the country’s Arab, Afghan, Somali and South Asian populations, and an Arabic majlis in Ontario is as likely to stand in a Mississauga basement as in an Ottawa townhouse. This page is the starting point for the province: which city guide to read, which style suits which household, and how a made-to-measure set from Sofhu reaches an Ontario address.
Sofhu makes two products, and both appear here. The Arabic majlis is raised, sofa-height seating in upholstered units with fixed backs and arm bolsters, like the sky blue U at the top of this page. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set at floor level with loose back cushions, an ottoman and floor pillows.
Where to read next: Ontario city by city
Communities are concentrated in the Greater Toronto Area, Ottawa, Windsor, London and Hamilton, and each city page looks at its own housing and households.
In the GTA, start with Arabic majlis in Toronto, where Iraqi, Afghan, Somali, Egyptian and Iranian families all have a strong presence, then Mississauga, a centre of the Iraqi community, and Brampton.
In the east, Ottawa has large Somali and Lebanese communities. In the southwest, Windsor is known for its Iraqi and Lebanese families, and there are separate guides for London, Hamilton and Kitchener-Waterloo.
For questions about Canada as a whole, the existing page on Arabic majlises in Canada remains the main reference.
Looking for an Arabic furniture store in Ontario
People search for a local shop because they want to see and touch a set first. It is a fair instinct, and the honest answer is that Sofhu has none in Ontario. It is the manufacturer, it works from Türkiye, and it does not keep stock in Canada.
What you get in exchange is a set made for your room. A ready-made floor sofa comes in fixed lengths. A Sofhu set is cut to the wall, so a run can end exactly at a door frame or a bulkhead. You see the design through photos of finished rooms and a video call with the designers. The Arabic furniture store online page explains how buying at a distance works.
Which style for which household
Ontario’s households do not share one seating tradition, and it helps to name the differences.

- Yemeni families know the diwan and the mafraj, rooms seated around the whole perimeter for long afternoon gatherings. The star motif on the navy floor sofa above is a Sofhu design, offered within its Yemeni-style range. See Yemeni diwan and mafraj seating.
- Iraqi families often think first of the diwaniya, the reception room expected to be the largest in the house. See Iraqi diwaniya seating.
- Afghan families sit on the toshak, a thinner mattress with loose back cushions that also serves for sleeping. See Afghan toshak floor seating.
- Somali families can read how we approach their sitting rooms under Somali Arabic seating.

The cream floor sofa above is Sofhu’s take on the Afghan toshak, shown as an L-shape with an ottoman and floor cushions.
Basement, condo or family room
Ontario winters are cold, homes are centrally heated, and many houses have a finished basement. That basement is often the best home for a majlis, because it has the wall length a full set needs.
| Space | Usual layout | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Finished basement | U-shape | Mark posts, bulkheads and the furnace-room door |
| Main-floor family room | L-shape | Keep the route to the kitchen clear |
| Condo living room | Single row | Measure around the balcony door |
Floor sofas are not freestanding and must lean on a wall. The guide to basement majlis ideas covers the awkward details of a North American basement, and how to measure a room for a majlis gives the method.

Fabric and foam for a heated house
In a house that is heated for much of the year, velvet and chenille are natural choices: warm to the touch and, in Sofhu’s description, durable and easy to clean. Linen is cooler and more breathable, a good match for a bright main-floor room in summer. All covers are zippered and Sofhu states they can be washed at 30°C.
The cushions are filled with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam and contain no springs. Density is about how well the cushion keeps its shape, not how hard it feels, and you can ask for a softer or firmer seat on a custom order.
Delivery and import handling for Ontario addresses
Every set is vacuum packed and shipped by cargo carrier from Türkiye to your door. Shipping is free worldwide, so it is free to any Ontario postal code. Unpack by hand, without blades, and let the foam recover.
On import: duty or tax may apply depending on the destination. Sofhu has not published a standard arrangement for Canada, so ask three things before you confirm an order. Who is named as importer? Is anything payable at delivery? What paperwork will come with the parcels? The background is in importing a majlis to Canada.
Businesses can ask about volume orders through the existing wholesale page.
