On this page
The photo at the top of this page shows a living room with a fireplace, a mantel and a cream and gold majlis running along the wall into the window corner. That is the point of an Arabic majlis in Prince Edward Island. It is not a themed room. It is a warm, sociable way to furnish an ordinary house. Sofhu builds the seating to your measurements in Türkiye and ships it free to the Island.
Sofhu makes two kinds of Arabic seating. The Arabic majlis, shown throughout this page, is raised to sofa height and fully upholstered, with a solid base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is the low one: a seat mattress near the floor with loose back cushions, an ottoman and floor pillows.
A majlis beside a Western fireplace
A majlis and a mantelpiece are not rivals. Seating kept to the walls leaves the windows and fireplace in view and the middle of the room open, so a room often looks larger after the change. Three things make the combination work.
- Keep the palette close to the room. Cream, beige and soft gold sit easily beside painted trim and a stone surround.
- Let the fireplace keep its wall. Run the seating along the other walls and stop short of the hearth.
- Use low tables. Cube tables and a single rug hold the centre without hiding the fire.

The guide to mixing a majlis with Western furniture goes further into combining the two in one room. For the range of looks available, from plain to patterned, see Arabic sofa sets and oriental sofa sets.
The Island’s Lebanese families
Prince Edward Island has a small Lebanese community with a long history. Families arrived in the late nineteenth century and settled mainly around Charlottetown, and several became prominent in Island business and politics. Seating along the wall belongs to the Levantine way of receiving guests, described on our page about Syrian and Levantine Arabic seating.
Beyond that community the market here is small, and Sofhu does not pretend otherwise. An Island order is typically one room in one house, so it is worth planning carefully.
Getting a made-to-measure set onto the Island
Sofhu keeps no stock in Canada. Each set is made after you order it, and it travels in a form built for distance.
- Foam cushions are vacuum sealed, which presses the air out of the foam and makes the parcels smaller.
- The parcels go by cargo carrier from Türkiye to your address. Shipping is free worldwide.
- At home, you open the bags by hand. Sofhu asks customers not to use sharp objects.
- The foam expands again once the seal is broken.
Two things are worth settling before you order. First, send your full Island address and postal code so the route can be confirmed. Second, ask about import duty or tax, which may apply depending on the destination. Sofhu has not published how this is handled for Canada. The guide to importing a majlis to Canada gives the background, and how a majlis is packed, shipped and set up describes the unpacking.
General questions about ordering in Canada are answered on the existing Arabic majlises in Canada page.
Cold-season care
Island winters are cold, and a sitting room works hard from November to April. A few points keep a set in good order.
Fabric. Velvet is the warm choice. Sofhu describes its velvet as durable and easy to clean, and the existing velvet sofa page shows the range. Chenille is a textured alternative with a very low shedding rate.
Washing. Covers are zippered and removable. Sofhu states they can be washed at 30°C. For velvet, it advises cool water and no tumble drying.
Heat. Keep upholstery away from open flame and do not push seating against a stove or baseboard heater.
Foam. The cushions hold 32 kg/m³ high-density foam and no springs. Denser foam generally keeps its height longer than light foam. You can request a softer or firmer feel.
Small rooms: one wall or one corner

A full three-wall set is not required. One seating module with an armrest at each end, like the sky blue piece above, already makes a place to sit. Two runs meeting in a corner make an L-shape that seats a family and leaves the doorway open.
| Layout | Walls needed | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Single row | One | A small living room or a guest bedroom |
| L-shape | Two | A living room with a television or fireplace on a third wall |
| U-shape | Three | A dedicated sitting room or finished basement |
Plan each piece against a wall. More compact layouts are in a majlis in a small apartment.
