Before fabric, before colour, a buyer in Hamilton has one decision to make: raised, or on the floor. The majlis sofa in the photo above is raised, with tufted charcoal cushions on a carved, walnut-toned wooden base along three walls. The other route is the Arabic floor sofa, low cushions at carpet level. Sofhu makes both to measure in Türkiye and ships either one free to Hamilton, Ontario.
Majlis, carved frame or floor sofa: the builds
The difference is height and weight, not quality. All are cushioned with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam, and all are made to measure. The Arabic majlis is the raised, fully upholstered product. The Arabic floor sofa is the low one, with loose back cushions and armrest blocks.
| Arabic floor sofa | Arabic majlis | Carved-frame set | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sits on | The floor, on a foam seat mattress | A solid upholstered base | A carved wooden base |
| Feels like | Sitting the old way, legs folded | A formal Arabic guest room | A low formal sofa |
| Moves | Easily, as cushions | As upholstered units | As furniture |
| Suits | Family rooms, basements, rentals | Guest rooms | Formal reception rooms |
Sofhu’s Turkish majlis line is the framed one. Its frame is solid beech with hand-carved details, and a carved coffee table is made to match. You can read about it on the Turkish majlis page, and the tradition behind raised wall seating is explained under Turkish sedir. If you cannot decide, floor seating or raised diwan weighs the two for comfort and upkeep.
Floor sofas are not freestanding. Their back cushions lean on the wall, so they belong along walls and nowhere else.
A majlis sofa in Hamilton, Ontario: lower city or Mountain
Where you live in Hamilton shapes the room you have to work with. The lower city has many older brick houses, and the Mountain is largely suburban homes.
Older houses often have smaller rooms, radiators under the windows and walls that are not perfectly square. A single row or an L-shape made to the exact wall length is the sensible order, and measuring at floor level matters more than usual. In a suburban house on the Mountain, a finished basement or family room with three open walls can take a U-shape.

The L-shaped taupe floor sofa above shows the first case: two walls used, the window and the rest of the floor left open.
Seating that follows your own tradition
Hamilton’s Muslim and Arab communities include Iraqi, Syrian and Somali families, among others. Each brings its own picture of a guest room, and Sofhu builds to that picture.
- Iraqi. The reception room is the diwaniya, and in the marsh tradition guests sit in two rows facing each other. The Iraqi diwaniya page explains the forms.
- Syrian and other Levantine. A low continuous sofa with cushions, often with more woodwork in the room. The carved-frame set is close to this taste.
- Gulf style. A raised majlis with fixed backs and arm bolsters between places, or the same room at carpet level with an Arabic floor sofa.
If you do not have a tradition in mind and simply want low, generous seating, the oriental sofa page is a neutral place to begin.
A first set for a new home
Start with one wall if that is what the room or the budget allows. Hamilton has welcomed many newcomer and refugee families, and some are furnishing a home from nothing. A floor sofa is a reasonable first piece, because it is seating for the family, a place for guests and, with the cushions laid flat, somewhere for a visiting relative to rest.
The sets are modular. A single row can become an L, and an L can become a U, as the household settles and the guest list grows. Say at the outset that you intend to add to it.

Winter comfort
Hamilton winters are cold, so plan the floor as well as the seat. A rug under and in front of the set keeps feet warm, and Sofhu can make one to match. Velvet and chenille covers feel warmer than flat weaves, and Sofhu describes its suede series as a good option for fall and winter.
Keep cushions a little clear of radiators and baseboard heaters, and mark those on your sketch so the layout allows for them. Every cover is zippered and, according to Sofhu, can be removed for a 30°C wash. On custom orders you may ask for firmer or softer foam.
Ordering and delivery
There is no local shop, so the order is made by quote.
- Measure each wall at floor level and note doors, radiators and windows.
- Photograph the room and, for a frame set, the route in from the front door.
- Send the measurements for a quote or message Sofhu on WhatsApp.
Shipping is free. Cushions arrive vacuum packed; open the bags by hand and let the foam recover. Import duty or tax may apply under Canadian rules, so ask with your quote.
