A Somali couch is not a separate furniture type. It is the Arabic-style seating that lines the walls of the sitting room, either a low floor sofa of seat cushions, back cushions and armrests or a raised, upholstered majlis, that many Somali households choose. Sofhu makes both in Türkiye to your wall measurements, filled with 32 kg/m³ foam, and ships them free worldwide.

When a family in Minneapolis or East London says they want a Somali couch, they rarely mean a three-seater from a furniture chain. They mean the low set that runs along the walls of the sitting room: long seat cushions, upright backrests, an armrest between sitters, and room for everyone when relatives arrive. That set is Arabic seating, the same family of furniture as a Yemeni or Gulf majlis, and it is what Sofhu builds to order.
What people mean by a Somali couch or Somali sofa
A Somali couch is a buying habit, not a historical furniture type. We looked for published sources describing a distinct Somali sitting-room set and found none. What exists is the search itself: people look for a Somali couch, a Somali sofa or a Somali majlis, and what they are looking for is a guest room furnished in the Arabic manner. So we describe it plainly: Arabic-style seating, chosen by the family, made to fit the room.
In practice the request has four parts:
- seating that follows the walls, so the centre of the room stays open
- firm cushions that stay comfortable through a long visit
- one fabric carried across seats, backs and armrests so the room reads as a single design
- enough length to seat a large family and its guests together
Sofhu builds that request as one of two products. The Arabic floor sofa is a low set of seat mattresses, loose back cushions and armrest blocks at floor level. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height and fully upholstered, with a solid base and fixed backs. Both appear in the photos on this page, and either can be what a family means by a Somali sofa. The guide to majlis sofa sets lists what a complete set contains.

Before the sofa: woven mats and the portable house
The older Somali furnishing tradition is woven, not upholstered, and it is well recorded. The aqal, the portable house of Somali pastoral nomads, is a frame of arched branches covered with hand-woven mats. Women weave those mats from grass, palm and plant fibre, build the house, and pass mats on to a daughter when she sets up her own home. Mats serve as walls and roof, and also as flooring and bedding. Museum accounts describe the inside as two zones: a sleeping area by the back wall and a living area nearer the door.
That matters here for one reason. It shows that sitting low, close to the ground and close to each other, is not foreign to Somali domestic life. The cushioned Arabic set is a newer answer to an old way of sharing a room. The set itself belongs to the seating tradition of the Arabian Peninsula, and its closest relatives are the Yemeni diwan and mafraj and the Emirati jalsa.
Somali majlis words and spellings
There is no single agreed English or Somali term, so search under several. People write Somali majlis, Somali floor seating, Somali living room set and Arabic sofa. In Somali you will see fadhi carbeed and variants such as fadhi carabi. We have not been able to confirm these phrases with a native-speaker source, so we use them only as search words and make no claim about which is correct.
Majlis itself is Arabic for a place of sitting, and it names the room, the gathering and the furniture. If that is the word your family uses, it describes exactly what we make.
Layouts for flats, terraces and family houses
Choose the layout from your walls and your doorway, not from a photo. Somali communities abroad are concentrated in a handful of cities, among them Minneapolis and St Paul, Columbus and Seattle in the United States, Toronto, Ottawa and Edmonton in Canada, London, Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff in Britain, and towns across Sweden and the Netherlands. Homes in those places range from compact rented flats to detached houses with a basement, and each calls for a different plan.
| Room | Layout that usually fits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow living room, one free wall | Single row | Keeps the walkway clear |
| Square room with a window wall | L-shape | Seats two sides, leaves the light |
| Separate guest room | U-shape | Uses three walls, seats the most |
Both kinds are planned against the walls. Each run needs a wall or something solid behind it, so measure only the walls that can take seating. Radiators, sockets and doors that open inward all shorten a run. The step-by-step guide on how to measure a room for a majlis covers this, the page on L-shape and U-shape layouts compares the plans, and there are specific ideas for a majlis in a small apartment.

One fabric across the whole room
A matched room is what sets this style apart from a mixed living room, and it is easy to plan when everything is made together. A Sofhu set can include the seat cushions, backrests and armrests, and on request a rug, an ottoman that doubles as a low table, large floor cushions and curtains. Ordering them at once keeps the colours and trims consistent.
For fabric, start with how the room is used:
- Velvet gives deep colour and is described by Sofhu as durable and easy to clean. It suits a formal guest room.
- Patterned woven and chenille fabrics hide everyday marks and suit a family room.
- Linen is described as absorbent and fresh in warm weather, useful where summers are hot.
Medallion and brocade-style patterns in burgundy, emerald, navy or beige are the designs most often shown on our sets. These are Sofhu designs. We do not present any of them as a Somali pattern.

Foam that lasts through long evenings
Ask about foam density before anything else, because a seat used daily by a large family can flatten sooner if the foam is light. Sofhu uses 32 kg/m³ foam, known in the trade as 32 DNS. The number is the weight of one cubic metre of foam. It measures how much material is in the cushion, not how hard it feels, and the Polyurethane Foam Association notes that denser foam generally keeps its support and shape better.
The cushions contain no springs, so there is no metal to work loose. On a custom order you can ask for a softer or firmer feel. With young children at home, the notes on a family majlis with kids are worth reading before you choose.
How to order your set
The order begins with measurements, and the quote follows from them. Send:
- The length of each wall that will have seating, corner to corner.
- The position and width of doors, windows and radiators on those walls.
- A photo or short video of the room.
- The layout you want and the colours you like.
