Some houses are known for their door being open: coffee appears before the guest has sat down, and there is always one more place. An Arabic majlis in Nova Scotia is furniture for that kind of house. Sofhu makes the seating to measure in Türkiye, with covers that suit a damp maritime climate, and ships it free to your address.

More than a century of Lebanese hospitality

Nova Scotia has a long-established Lebanese community centred on Halifax. Its families have been prominent in local business and public life for more than a hundred years, and Arabic is among the most widely spoken immigrant languages in the province. For these families, low seating along the wall is not a novelty. It belongs to the way guests have long been received in the Levant.

The Levantine version of the tradition is specific. In the old reception rooms of Damascus, guests stepped up onto a raised area lined with a low sofa and cushions. It was not a set of mattresses directly on the floor. Sofhu makes both: the raised, upholstered Arabic majlis, which is the kind pictured on this page, and the low Arabic floor sofa of floor cushions. The page on Syrian and Levantine Arabic seating explains the difference. If the words themselves are a puzzle, jalsa majlis sets untangles the two names people use for the same seating.

A second sitting room, or one room that does both

Many homes keep a formal living room with upright sofas for visitors and a more relaxed room for family. A majlis fits naturally into the second role. In a smaller house the two can share a room.

The guide to mixing a majlis with Western furniture deals with the second case. For a quiet palette that sits well beside existing furniture, see beige, cream and grey majlis ideas.

Breathable covers for a maritime climate

The air in Nova Scotia is damp for much of the year. That is the main local consideration when you choose a fabric.

Linen is the breathable choice. Sofhu describes its linens as porous and highly moisture absorbent, and its existing page on the linen floor sofa lists the series. Velvet is warmer and richer, and Sofhu describes it as durable and easy to clean. Either way the cover has a zip and comes off, and Sofhu states that covers can be machine washed at 30°C. Dry them completely before refitting, and lift the seat cushions occasionally so the underside is aired.

A lighter colour, like the dusty blue and cream above, also helps on grey days. The trade-offs are set out in velvet vs linen vs jacquard majlis fabric.

Rooms with bay windows, radiators and doorways

A majlis lines the walls and a floor sofa must lean on one, so the walls decide everything. A room with a bay window, a radiator and two doors can still take a full set if it is measured honestly.

  • Measure each wall section separately, including each face of a bay.
  • Note radiators and vents. Seating should stop short of a heat source.
  • Record the sill height of any window that will sit behind a backrest.
  • Mark which way each door swings.

Corners are where a made-to-measure set shows its worth: the runs meet cleanly without a gap or an overlap, as in the photo above. Sofhu fills the cushions with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam, and you can ask for a softer or firmer feel.

Questions

Before you order

Can a majlis follow a bay window?

Usually, yes. The seating is made in sections, so a run can be broken into shorter pieces that follow the angles of a bay. Measure each face of the bay separately at floor level, note the sill height, and send a photo. Sofhu will suggest how to divide the seats.

Is linen a good choice for a house near the sea?

Linen is the breathable option. Sofhu describes its linen fabrics as highly moisture absorbent with a porous structure, and the covers can be washed at 30°C. It creases more and feels cooler than velvet, so one sensible split is linen for a bright front room and velvet for a winter den.

We already have a formal living room. Where does a majlis fit?

Most often in a second room: a den, a finished basement or a sunroom. The formal room keeps its sofas and the majlis becomes the place for family evenings, Ramadan and large visits. A single row can also sit in the same room as Western furniture if the colours are chosen together.

Does Sofhu deliver outside Halifax?

Shipping is free worldwide, so the delivery address can be anywhere in Nova Scotia, including Cape Breton and the South Shore. Give your full postal code when you ask for a quote so the route can be confirmed. Sofhu has no shop or stock in the province; each set is made to order.

Are import taxes included?

The shipping cost is covered. Import duty or tax may apply depending on the destination, and Sofhu has not published the arrangement for Canada. Ask before you order. The guide to importing a majlis to Canada explains the general rules from the official sources.
