Ordering furniture to Tasmania always raises the same doubt: will they actually send it here? For an Arabic majlis in Tasmania the answer from Sofhu is yes. Each set is made to measure in Türkiye and shipped free worldwide, and the island is part of that. This page covers how the set travels, which fabrics suit a cool climate, and how to order well from a distance.
Sofhu makes two products. The Arabic majlis shown in the photographs on this page is raised to sofa height, with an upholstered base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set at floor level with loose back cushions and armrest blocks. Say which one you want when you write.
How a majlis reaches Tasmania
The set is compressed before it leaves the workshop. Sofhu vacuum packs the cushions, which reduces the volume sharply and makes a whole room of seating manageable for a cargo carrier. The parcels are then sent from Türkiye to your delivery address.
Three practical points for island buyers:
- Give the full address with your quote request, so Sofhu can confirm how the carrier reaches you.
- Ask about timing at the same moment. Sofhu does not publish a fixed production or transit time, and an order for Eid should be raised early.
- Taxes or duties may apply depending on the destination. Ask how your order is handled before you pay.
When the parcels arrive, open the sealed plastic by hand. Do not use a knife or scissors near the fabric. The foam starts to expand as soon as air gets in. The article on how a majlis is packed and delivered describes each stage, and importing a majlis to Australia covers the border side.

Who orders Arabic seating in Tasmania
Tasmania’s Muslim community is small, and most of it lives in and around Hobart and Launceston. It includes families who arrived as refugees, Afghans among them. For a family settling in a new place, the sitting room matters a great deal. It is where the household eats together and where neighbours are received.
Afghan families will know the long floor mattress described on our Afghan toshak page. Others prefer a firmer Arabic floor sofa with backrests and armrests, or a raised majlis for the guest room. Sofhu makes all of these and builds from whatever description and photos you send. The country-level page on Arabic sofas in Australia gives the wider context.
Warm covers for a cool climate
Tasmania has a cool temperate climate, so the fabric advice is the reverse of what suits most of the mainland. Here you want covers that feel warm the moment you sit.
| Fabric | Feel | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Velvet | Soft pile, warm | The main sitting room |
| Chenille | Textured, warm, very low shedding | Everyday family use |
| Suede series | Smooth and snug | Sofhu describes it as a good option in autumn and winter |
| Linen | Cool and crisp | A sunroom, or summer covers |
Sofhu describes its velvet as durable and easy to clean, and the existing velvet floor sofas page shows the range. All covers are zippered and removable. Wash velvet covers cool, and do not tumble dry them. In a damp winter, let the covers dry fully indoors before zipping them back on.

Layouts for smaller sitting rooms
A majlis does not need a large room. It needs a wall. A floor sofa is not freestanding, so each section leans against something solid, and a raised majlis is set against the walls too. Either way the layout follows the walls you can spare.
For a compact lounge, a single row along the wall opposite the heater seats a family comfortably. For a corner, an L-shape uses two walls and leaves the rest of the room open. Where two runs of a majlis meet, Sofhu fits a corner piece so the seat continues without a gap, as the close view below shows.

A U-shape along three walls is the choice when the room is used mainly for guests. Our guide to a majlis in a small apartment has more ideas for tight spaces.
The foam inside
Seats are filled with 32 kg/m³ polyurethane foam, labelled 32 DNS in Türkiye. That is its density: one cubic metre weighs about 32 kg. A denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer. Density is not the same as hardness, and you can ask for a softer or firmer seat on a custom order. The cushions contain no springs.
Ordering a majlis sofa from a distance
Without a shop to visit, a good order depends on what you send. The more exact the information, the closer the fit.
- Measure each wall at floor level, where the skirting board sits.
- Mark doors, windows, heaters and power points on a simple sketch.
- Take photos of the room in daylight.
- Choose a layout and two or three colours you like from Sofhu’s photos.
- Say how many people usually sit there, and whether anyone sleeps on the seating.
Sofhu’s designers work through the rest with you by video call or message. Our step-by-step article on how to order a custom majlis online explains the process, and majlis for sale sets out what to check before buying from any seller.
When you are ready, get a quote by measurement or send the details on WhatsApp. The city page for Hobart adds local notes. The full range is on the Arabic majlis page, and across the strait the Victoria page covers Melbourne.
