Sofhu makes Arabic majlis sets to order for the Australian Capital Territory and ships them free from Türkiye. Diplomatic residences, chanceries and family homes send the wall measurements of the room, choose a raised majlis or a low floor sofa, a layout and a fabric, and receive a set cut to fit, filled with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam. There is no shop in the ACT; every set is built for one room.

An Arabic majlis in the Australian Capital Territory usually has one of two jobs. It is either a formal reception room, where a host receives official visitors the way it is done at home, or it is the family’s own sitting room in a suburban house. Sofhu builds both to order in Türkiye, from the measurements of the room, and ships them free to ACT addresses.
Who orders an Arabic majlis in the Australian Capital Territory
The territory’s audience is unlike that of any Australian state. Canberra hosts the embassies of many Arab and Gulf states, a good number of them in and around Yarralumla. A residence or chancery that wants to receive guests in a proper majlis is a natural buyer here.
Alongside the diplomatic households there is a small resident community: families who have settled in Canberra for work or study and who want the room they grew up with. Their brief is different. They want washable covers, a layout that leaves the children space to play, and seating that copes with a full house at Eid.
Sofhu is the manufacturer, not a reseller, so both kinds of order go straight to the people who cut the foam and sew the covers. The wider Australian picture is covered on our page about Arabic sofas in Australia.

Reception room or family room: two different briefs
The purpose of the room decides more than the colour does. This is how the two briefs usually differ.
| Question | Formal reception | Family sitting room |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | U-shape along three walls | L-shape or single row |
| Fabric | Velvet or jacquard with trim | Plain chenille, linen or velvet |
| Product | Usually an Arabic majlis | Often an Arabic floor sofa |
| Extras | Matching rug and curtains | Ottoman, loose floor cushions |
A U-shaped set lines three walls and keeps the centre clear for serving coffee. An L-shape leaves one wall for a door, a heater or a bookcase. The page on L-shape and U-shape majlis layouts shows how each corner is joined, and our guide to the office majlis for companies and embassies looks at reception seating in more depth.

Arabic majlis or floor sofa
Sofhu makes two different products, and choosing between them is the main decision here. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height: structured, fully upholstered units with a solid base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters. The burgundy, dusty blue and beige sets photographed on this page are majlis. The Arabic floor sofa is the low one: seat mattresses on the floor, loose back cushions leaning against the wall and armrest blocks, usually with an ottoman and floor pillows. The chart above shows its layouts. Sofhu also produces sets on wooden bench frames.
For a room that receives guests in formal dress, or older visitors, the majlis is worth considering. For a family room, a floor sofa gives more seats along the same wall and a softer place for children. The comparison of floor seating and the raised diwan sets out the trade-offs.
One rule applies to floor sofas: they are not freestanding. Each run of seating needs a wall or something equally solid behind it.
Fabrics for cold Canberra winters
The ACT has cold winters by Australian standards, and houses are heated for months. That favours covers with some warmth in them.
- Velvet has a soft pile and a formal look. Sofhu describes its velvets as durable and easy to clean.
- Chenille feels similar under the hand, with a woven texture and a very low shedding rate.
- Suede-look fabric is described by Sofhu as a good option for autumn and winter.
- Linen breathes well and suits a north-facing room that gets strong sun.
All covers are zippered and removable, and Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C. In a reception room, dark velvet with gold banding reads as formal without much decoration. Our black and gold majlis ideas show that look in several layouts.

What is inside the cushions
Every seat is filled with 32 kg/m³ polyurethane foam, known in the Turkish trade as 32 DNS. The figure is density: a cubic metre of the foam weighs about 32 kg. Density is the amount of material in the cushion, not how hard it feels. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer, which matters in a room where the same seats are used every week. There are no springs. On a custom order you can ask for a softer or firmer seat.
Majlis sofa delivery to the Australian Capital Territory
Sets are made in Türkiye, vacuum packed to reduce their volume and sent by cargo carrier to the delivery address. Shipping is free worldwide, which includes the ACT. When the parcels arrive, open the sealed bags without a blade and give the foam time to recover its shape.
Taxes or duties may apply depending on the destination. Australia has its own rules for goods arriving from overseas, and Sofhu can tell you how an order is handled before you commit. The guide to importing a majlis to Australia explains what the official sources say.
Starting a quote
A quote begins with the room, not with a catalogue price. Send these four things.
- The length of every wall that will carry seating, measured at floor level.
- The position of doors, windows, heaters and power points.
- Photos or a short video of the room.
- The purpose of the room, the number of guests and any colours you have in mind.
Then get a quote by measurement or send the details over WhatsApp. For the wider range, see the main Arabic majlis page and the options for a custom majlis. The city page for majlis sofas in Canberra goes into the embassy suburbs and typical houses, and across the border the New South Wales page covers Sydney’s much larger community.
