New South Wales is home to Australia’s largest Arab community, and much of it lives in south-western Sydney. For those families an Arabic majlis is not a novelty. It is the room where Eid lunch is served, where the engagement is agreed and where relatives from overseas sleep for a month. Sofhu makes these sets in Türkiye to the measurements of your room and ships them free to New South Wales.
Two products appear on this page. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height and fully upholstered, with a solid base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is low: a seat mattress near the floor with loose back cushions, an ottoman and floor pillows. The burgundy velvet set at the top is a majlis; the red sadu-weave set further down is a floor sofa.
Who sits on a majlis in New South Wales
Different suburbs carry different traditions, and the seating follows.
Lebanese Australians are concentrated in south-western Sydney, around Bankstown, Lakemba, Punchbowl and Greenacre. Many Iraqi and Assyrian families live around Fairfield and Liverpool, and Auburn is home to Afghan and Turkish families. Each group has its own idea of what the guest room should look like.
| Household | Seating tradition | Read more |
|---|---|---|
| Lebanese, Syrian | Low sofa with cushions along the wall | Levantine Arabic seating |
| Iraqi | Large guest room, long facing rows | Iraqi diwaniya |
| Afghan | Long, soft floor mattresses with loose back cushions | Afghan toshak |
| Turkish | Corner set in kilim-pattern fabric | Turkish sedir |
These are starting points, not rules. A Lebanese household may prefer a Gulf-style set with bolster armrests, and an Iraqi family may want something plain and modern. Sofhu builds from your description, your photos and your walls.

Arabic floor seating for a New South Wales summer
Summers here are warm and humid, so the cover matters as much as the foam. Fabric that traps heat becomes unpleasant in a full room in January.
Linen is the usual answer. Sofhu describes its linen series as having high moisture absorption and a refreshing effect in hot weather because of the fabric’s porous structure. Flat woven covers behave in a similar way. Velvet and chenille are warmer and suit a formal room with air conditioning, or a household that hosts mostly in the cooler months.
Three habits help in humid weather:
- Take the zippered covers off and wash them at 30°C after heavy use.
- Dry the covers completely before putting them back on the foam.
- Air the room, and lift the seat cushions from time to time if they sit on a cold tiled floor.
The details are in our comparison of velvet, linen and jacquard majlis fabric, and the existing page on the linen floor sofa shows the lighter look.

Fitting the set to a unit, a townhouse or a family house
A floor sofa is not freestanding. Every section leans against a wall, so the layout is decided by which walls are free.
In an apartment living room, where a balcony door takes one side, an L-shape in the corner beside the window usually works. Where the room is wide enough, the seating can wrap a third side, as in the teal majlis shown above. A single row along the longest wall suits a narrow lounge or a spare bedroom used as a prayer and sitting room. In a detached house with a separate front room or a converted garage, a U-shape along three walls gives the most seats and leaves the middle open for the food.
Because the pieces are modular, the same set can be re-laid when the family moves. That is useful for renters. More layouts are shown on the L-shape and U-shape majlis page, and the main Arabic floor sofa page explains each component.
The foam, in plain terms
Sofhu fills its seats with 32 kg/m³ polyurethane foam, written as 32 DNS in the Turkish trade. The number is the weight of one cubic metre of foam. It describes how much material is in the cushion, and denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer. It does not describe hardness, so say whether you like a softer or firmer seat when you order. The cushions contain no springs.

Hosting in Ramadan and at Eid
For most households the test of the room is the largest gathering of the year. Count the people you seat at iftar on a busy night and give that number with your measurements. A U-shape with two or three loose floor cushions and an ottoman takes the overflow without a second set of furniture. Our iftar and Eid seating plan works through groups of different sizes.
