The usual worry about a majlis sofa in Hobart is the cold. People picture sitting on the floor in July and decide against it. That picture is wrong on two counts. A raised majlis sits at ordinary sofa height, and even on a low floor sofa you do not sit on the floor: you sit on a thick foam cushion, against a backrest, with a rug under your feet. Keeping floor seating warm in a cool maritime climate

Position. Outside walls are the coldest surfaces in an older house. If you have a choice, run the seating along internal walls and leave the wall with the big window free.

Velvet and suede: covers for cold months

Fabric matters to how a seat feels when you first sit down. Velvet has a warm, soft pile and is Sofhu’s classic choice for a guest room. Dense foam and why it matters

Sofhu fills its cushions with 32 kg/m³ (32 DNS) high-density foam, with no springs. The number is a density: a cubic metre of this foam weighs about 32 kg. It is often mistaken for a firmness rating. It is not. Firmness is a separate property, and on a custom order you can ask for a softer or firmer seat.

What density does tell you is how much material is in the cushion. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer than light foam, so the seat stays closer to the one you unpacked. Layouts for Hobart houses

Seating of either kind runs along the walls, and a floor sofa is not freestanding: every back cushion needs a wall. So the layout follows the room.

Single row: one wall of a sunroom, study or small sitting room.
L-shape: two walls meeting in a corner, leaving the rest of the room for a table or a heater.
U-shape: three walls of a dedicated guest room, with a rug and ottoman in the middle.

Does free shipping cover Tasmania, or only the mainland?

Sofhu's shipping is free worldwide and it states that it delivers everywhere. Tasmania adds a sea crossing to the journey, so give your full address and postcode with the enquiry and ask Sofhu to confirm how delivery to your door will be arranged.

Can a floor sofa stand near a wood heater or panel heater?

Keep it well clear. Sofhu's own care notes for velvet say to keep the fabric away from fire, and no fire-safety rating is published for the foam or covers. Leave the wall nearest the heater empty and plan the seating on the others.

Will the covers dry in a Hobart winter?

They will, but slowly on a line. The covers unzip and Sofhu states they wash at 30°C. Sofhu advises against tumble drying velvet, so wash one section at a time and dry it indoors on a rack in a warm room before refitting.

Is floor seating too cold for older visitors?

Cold is one concern and getting up is the other. A thicker seat cushion and a rug deal with the first. For the second, many households keep an ordinary chair or a raised bench at one end of the row. Mention both when you ask for a quote.

Can the set double as a guest bed for visitors from the mainland?

A long seat section along one wall can take an overnight guest once the loose cushions are moved. If you want this, say so with your measurements so the seat lengths are planned for it, and ask for armrests as separate, movable pieces.
