The short answer

A majlis sofa for Riyadh is usually ordered for one of three rooms: the men's majlis of a villa, a mulhaq annex, or a bayt sha'ar tent used on winter evenings. Sofhu makes each set to the room's wall measurements in Türkiye, with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam and removable covers in sadu-pattern, velvet or woven fabric, and ships it free.

A Riyadh villa is planned around its majlis. The men’s reception room often has its own entrance from the street, so guests can arrive and leave without crossing the family’s part of the house. Many households add a second sitting place outside the main building: a mulhaq annex in the yard, or a bayt sha’ar tent for winter evenings. A majlis sofa in Riyadh is ordered for one of these three rooms, and each asks for something different. Sofhu makes every set to measure in Türkiye and ships it free. It makes two products: the Arabic majlis, raised to sofa height and fully upholstered with a solid base, fixed backs and arm bolsters, which suits the villa, and the Arabic floor sofa, a low set of seat mattresses and loose back cushions, which suits the tent.

Three rooms, three briefs

RoomHow it is usedWhat to ask for

Mulhaq annexFriends, weekly gatheringsL or U-shape, firmer seat, patterned washable covers

In every case the seating runs along the walls and leaves the centre free. Neither a majlis nor a floor sofa is freestanding; each needs a wall or a firm panel behind it, which matters most in a tent. The L-shape and U-shape page explains the planning, and the custom majlis hub explains what can be changed.

What “Najdi style” means, and what it does not

Riyadh is the heart of Najd, and Najd is where the majlis is most strongly tied to the house itself. Traditional Najdi mud-brick houses are known for plaster walls incised with star and geometric designs around the majlis and the coffee hearth, with shelves for the coffee pots beside it. Guests sat on rugs and leaned on cushions along the walls.

That documented tradition is about walls, hearths and hospitality. It does not prescribe a sofa. When customers ask for a Najdi majlis today they usually mean a low floor sofa in red, black and white sadu-pattern fabric, like the one below, a habit of the trade more than a rule of history. Al Sadu weaving itself, the Bedouin women’s craft of geometric bands in wool and hair, is inscribed by UNESCO as intangible heritage for Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

The Saudi majlis page sets out the regional differences, Bedouin majlis and sadu weaving explains the textile, and majlis patterns and motifs shows how the sadu band differs from medallion and kilim designs.

Fabric for dust, sun and cool nights

Riyadh’s desert climate is dry, with very hot summers and winter nights that turn properly cool. Humidity is not the problem here. Dust and strong sunlight are.

  • Sadu-pattern and jacquard weaves hide dust between cleanings and suit the mulhaq and the tent.
  • Velvet gives the formal majlis its depth of colour and feels warm on a January night. Sofhu describes it as durable and easy to clean. See the existing velvet floor sofas page.
  • Linen is the breathable choice for a family room used through a summer afternoon.

Keep the strongest colours away from windows that take direct afternoon sun, or draw the curtains. The full list of fabric series is on the fabrics page.

Foam for a room used every evening

A majlis that fills several nights a week needs a seat that recovers. Sofhu uses 32 kg/m³ polyurethane foam, with no springs. The figure is density, the weight of foam in a cubic metre, not hardness. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer, and on a custom order you can still choose a softer or firmer feel. The article on foam density for floor seating explains what to ask any maker.

Ordering an Arabic majlis from Riyadh

Sofhu has no branch in Riyadh. The existing Arabic sofa in Saudi Arabia page gives the national overview. The steps are the same from any district of the city.

  1. Measure each wall at floor level, after skirting and air-conditioning units are fitted.
  2. Mark the doors, including the separate guest entrance if there is one.
  3. Say which room it is: villa majlis, mulhaq or tent.
  4. Send photos and your colour direction.

Sets are vacuum packed and sent by cargo carrier with free shipping. Ask about timing when you request the quote. Duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination. Read ordering a majlis in the GCC first, browse the Arabic majlis hub for ideas, then get a quote by measurement or message Sofhu on WhatsApp. For garden and tent pieces, see the outdoor majlis hub.

Questions

Before you order

Is Sofhu's sadu fabric hand-woven sadu?

No, and it should not be described that way. Traditional sadu is a warp-faced textile woven by hand, by women, from wool and animal hair. Sofhu's sadu sets use upholstery fabric with sadu-style bands and motifs, which is practical for seat covers that are unzipped and washed. If you own real sadu pieces, use them as cushions or wall hangings alongside the set.

Can a floor sofa be used in a tent on sand or on a concrete slab?

Yes, with two cautions. The set needs a ground covering under it, such as a carpet or kilim, and it needs something firm behind the backrests, because Arabic floor seating is not freestanding. In a tent that usually means a low wall, a rail or a rigid panel along the sides. Describe the tent structure when you ask for the quote.

How do I keep dust out of the cushions?

You cannot keep Riyadh's dust out of a room, but you can make it easy to remove. Vacuum the seats with a brush head weekly, choose a tight weave over a deep pile for rooms that open directly outside, and take the zippered covers off for washing when they need it; Sofhu states a 30°C machine wash. Patterned fabric shows fine dust far less than plain dark velvet.

Can the men's majlis and the family room be ordered together?

Yes. Send both rooms' measurements in one enquiry and say how each is used. Many households choose a formal fabric for the guest majlis and a calmer, more washable one for the family room, with the same foam in both. Ordering together lets the designers coordinate colours across the two rooms.

Where in Riyadh can I see Sofhu sets?

Nowhere locally. Sofhu manufactures in Türkiye and has no branch, dealer or stock in Riyadh. The choice is made from photos of finished sets and a video call with the designers, then the set is built to your measurements and delivered to your address.

What will customs cost on delivery to Riyadh?

Shipping itself is free. Duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination, and Sofhu has not published the figures or terms for Saudi Arabia, so this page cannot state them. Ask for the position in writing with your quote before you confirm.
