Floor seating suits a home with small children because the seat is low, there are no springs or hard frame edges in the cushions, and the covers unzip for the washing machine. Choose a patterned mid-tone fabric, keep the centre of the room open for play, and have Sofhu cut the set to your walls so the run fits from end to end.

A toddler treats every sofa as a climbing frame, a trampoline and a table. That is the real test of floor seating for kids, and an Arabic floor sofa passes it for three plain reasons: the seat is close to the ground, the cushions have no springs or hard frame inside, and the covers come off and go in the wash. This guide covers what parents ask before ordering, from fall height to felt-tip pen, and how to plan a family floor sofa that still looks like a guest room when the toys are put away.
A note on names. This guide is about the Arabic floor sofa: a low seat mattress with loose back cushions, armrests and an ottoman. Sofhu also makes the Arabic majlis, a raised, sofa-height set of upholstered units with fixed backs, which is the more formal choice for a guest room. In a family home, majlis is also simply the name of the room.
Low height and toddlers
The useful thing about a low seat is simple: there is less distance to fall. A child who rolls off the edge of a floor-level seat lands a short way down, usually onto a rug. A child who can climb up alone can also climb down alone, which means fewer rescues and less frustration.
That is as far as the claim goes. Low seating is not a safety device. A toddler can still tumble off a backrest, trip on a rug edge or pull a tea glass off a side table. What you gain is a room with fewer hard edges at head height.
Two details of the construction help. Sofhu fills its cushions with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam and uses no springs or metal inside them, so there is nothing to work loose under a jumping child. And the seat is firm. A firm seat is easier for small legs to stand up on than a soft one that swallows the foot.
If you are searching for toddler safe seating, read the phrase as “seating with fewer hazards” and plan the rest of the room to match: rounded or padded tables, no trailing lamp cables, and a rug that lies flat.
Covers and stains
Every family sofa meets milk, juice, biscuit and at least one marker pen. What matters is whether you can get the cover off.
Sofhu states that its covers are zippered and removable and can be machine washed at 30 degrees. In practice that means a spill is a laundry job, not a furniture problem. A few habits keep it that way:
- Blot a fresh spill with a dry cloth before it reaches the foam. Do not rub.
- Unzip the cover, turn it inside out and wash it at 30 degrees.
- Air dry. Sofhu’s care notes for velvet say not to tumble dry.
- Wash the covers of one run of seats together so the shade stays even.
Zips matter with small children. Push the zip pull fully home and tuck the zip side against the wall or the neighbouring seat so curious fingers do not find it.
For dried or stubborn marks, the methods in removing coffee, tea, saffron and henna stains from a majlis apply just as well to chocolate and fruit juice. Sofhu’s own notes on the fabric series it uses explain how each type behaves.

Kid friendly sofa fabric and colours that forgive
The most forgiving kid friendly sofa fabric has three qualities: a tight weave, some pattern and a middle tone.
| Choice | Why it helps | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Woven or jacquard with a motif | Pattern breaks up small marks | Raised threads if a child picks at them |
| Chenille | Soft to sit on; Sofhu describes its shedding as very low | Check the cover is removable on every piece |
| Velvet | Sofhu describes it as durable and easy to clean | Plain velvet shows handprints until brushed |
| Linen | Breathable in warm rooms | Pale linen marks quickly |
Colour does as much work as fibre. Plain cream shows everything dark. Plain black shows everything light, including crumbs and dust. The mid-tones sit between: taupe, grey, olive, teal, burgundy, navy. Add a medallion or kilim pattern and a small stain disappears into it until wash day.
A two-colour set is a practical trick. Put the darker fabric on the base and armrest fronts, where shoes and toy cars hit, and the lighter one on the seat top and backrests. More ideas are in how to choose majlis colours, and the fibres are compared in velvet, linen and jacquard.
On custom orders Sofhu lists stain-resistant fabric among its options. Ask what is currently available when you request your quote.

Floor seating for kids: a layout with play space
Children need floor more than they need seats. Plan the floor seating for family room use by pushing the seats to the walls and guarding the middle.
- L shape. Two walls seated, two walls free. This is the usual answer for a family room that also holds a television, a toy shelf or a desk.
- U shape. Three walls seated and a large rug in the centre. It turns the middle into a playpen that adults can watch from every side.
- Single row. One wall of seating in a narrow room or a shared bedroom, with the rest left clear.
Sofhu makes all three, and the layouts are compared in L-shape and U-shape majlis layouts.

Three planning points are specific to homes with children.
Skip the heavy centre table. A hard-edged table in the middle of the play area is the one thing a low room does not need. A soft ottoman does the same job and can be pushed aside. Tray-top armrests give adult cups a steadier place than the floor.
Add loose floor cushions. They become stepping stones, reading seats and den walls. Sofhu makes floor cushions to match its sets.
Fit the set to the wall. A seat run that ends short of the corner leaves a gap for toys and small feet. Because each set is made from your wall measurements, the run can finish exactly where the wall does.
The same thinking suits playroom floor seating: one low row along the longest wall gives parents a place to sit at the children’s level without filling the room with furniture.
Sleepovers and naps
A floor seat is a level, firm surface, which is why many households use it for naps. Take the backrest cushions off, lay a sheet over the seat and an older child has a bed for the afternoon or for a cousin’s sleepover. Two seats pushed together make room for two.
A few sensible limits:
- Babies sleep in a cot. Follow your health service’s safe-sleep advice for infants, and do not leave a baby to sleep on sofa cushions or among loose pillows.
- Keep the sleeping seat against the wall and away from the room heater.
- Put the loose throw pillows aside at night for younger children.
For small flats where the family room is also the guest room, see a majlis in a small apartment.
What to tell the workshop
Sofhu is the manufacturer and builds each set in Türkiye to order, so a family set is specified for your household from the start. When you ask for a quote, mention:
- the ages of the children and whether the room is also the guest room
- the wall lengths, with doors, radiators and sockets marked
- whether you want a softer or firmer foam; firmer usually suits a room that gets jumped on
- your fabric and colour preferences, and that the covers must come off for washing
