When the weather turns in Kuwait, Jahra heads for the desert. The kashta season, the winter months of camping out with family and friends, is part of life here in a way it is not in the towers of the capital. So is the big diwaniya. Jahra, west of Kuwait City, is known for its Bedouin-origin families and strong tribal traditions, and both of its gathering places, the hall at home and the tent outside, are furnished the old way: low, along the edges, with pattern that means something.
That is why the seating ordered for Jahra is usually a floor sofa, the floor-level set, and why Sofhu builds it in sadu-style fabric. Each one is made to measure in Türkiye and shipped free.
Floor level, by choice
Raised sofas have their place, and Sofhu makes both kinds. Its Arabic majlis is a raised, fully upholstered set at sofa height with a solid base, fixed backs and arm bolsters. Its Arabic floor sofa, like the red sadu-pattern set at the top of this page, is a seat mattress at floor level with loose back cushions and armrest blocks. For families whose grandparents received guests on rugs and cushions in the men’s side of the tent, sitting at floor level is not a compromise. It is how a gathering is supposed to feel: close, unhurried, everyone at the same height.
A Sofhu floor sofa keeps that and adds what the old arrangement lacked. The seat is a block of 32 DNS foam, 32 kg per cubic metre, with no springs, so it supports properly through a long evening. Backrests stand against the wall and armrests mark each place. Denser foam generally keeps its height longer, which counts in a room used by many people. The comparison is laid out in floor seating vs raised diwan, and the range is on the Arabic jalsa page.
Sadu-style pattern, and what it is
Kuwait is one of the homes of Al Sadu, the Bedouin weaving of narrow geometric bands, often in red, black and white. Sofhu’s sets use upholstery fabric woven in that style. It is not hand-woven sadu, and it is right to say so, but it carries the same stripes and motifs onto seating that can be sat on every day and washed.
Two versions are common: the full red, black and white, and a quieter cream ground with burgundy motifs. The first suits a traditional diwaniya or a camp. The second works where the house is modern but the family wants the room to say where it comes from. See the Bedouin majlis and sadu guide and majlis patterns and motifs.
Majlis sofa Jahra: seating a large diwaniya
A large diwaniya has its own rules.
- Order the full length together. Long runs ordered at the same time are easier to match.
- Break the run. An armrest every seat or two gives the wall a rhythm and guests somewhere to lean.
- Plan the head of the room. Decide where the elders sit before deciding anything else.
- Fill the middle. A large rug, ottomans and loose floor cushions stop a wide floor feeling empty.
A plan view helps more than any photograph when you are working out a U-shape. The one below shows a raised majlis, and the footprint is planned the same way for a floor sofa.

Sofhu can supply a floor sofa alone or build it up into a full set with rug, ottoman and cushions.

The room itself is described in the Kuwaiti diwaniya guide.
The kashta season
A camp needs seating that packs, travels and does not mind sand. A floor sofa’s pieces are separate, so they can be loaded and laid out again. For sitting by the fire, Sofhu’s folding sunbed, a padded mat with a reclining backrest on a stand, goes anywhere a rug does.

There is more on tents and camps in majlis seating for glamping tents and desert camps.
