A flat on Arabian Gulf Street with the sea through the window does not want a heavy burgundy velvet majlis with gold tassels. Salmiya is one of Kuwait’s main shopping and seafront districts: malls, cafés along the corniche, and apartment towers lived in largely by expatriates. The majlis sofa that suits Salmiya is lighter in colour, cleaner in line and covered in something that breathes.

What “modern” means for an Arabic set
The structure stays the same: a seat along the wall, a backrest, armrests that divide the run. What changes is the dressing.
- Colour. Navy and white, grey, taupe, sand. One strong colour at most.
- Pattern. Plain cloth, a fine geometric or a single stripe, not an all-over medallion.
- Trim. No fringe, no tassels, piping in the same tone.
- Extras. One rug, one low table, a pair of floor cushions. Nothing else.

Majlis sofa Salmiya: fabric for a humid coast
Salmiya sits on the water, and in late summer the humidity comes in off the Gulf. In a room that opens to a balcony, that settles into upholstery.
Linen is the obvious answer. Sofhu describes its linen as absorbing moisture well and feeling fresh in hot weather because of its open structure. A tight flat weave is the alternative if you want something smoother. Deep-pile velvet is the one to think twice about in a room that is often open to sea air, though it is fine in a closed, air-conditioned one.
Every cover has a zip, and Sofhu states the covers can be machine washed at 30°C. Take them off, wash them, and do not tumble dry velvet. In a humid season that routine does more for the life of the set than any choice of colour.
The sea-view living room
Tower apartments tend to have one glass wall and not much else that is free. Work with the solid walls.
An L-shape with its long arm on the side wall and its short arm returning towards the window gives everyone the view without putting backrests against glass. A single row opposite the window does the same in a narrower room. Leave the balcony door clear, and remember that the seating must back onto something hard.
