The short answer

Majlis seating suits glamping tents and desert camps when three things are right: a dry platform under the cushions, something solid behind the backrests, and zipped covers that wash at 30 degrees between guests. Sofhu makes floor sofas, majlis sets and wooden bench sets to measure in Türkiye, plus a foldable outdoor mat, with 32 kg/m³ foam and free worldwide shipping.

A tent has no walls to lean on, no dry floor and no cupboard. That is the whole problem with glamping tent furniture, and it is why ordinary sofas are a poor fit for camps. Low Arabic seating is a natural fit for canvas. It began in the goat-hair tent, it packs small and a floor sofa is nothing more than loose cushions. It still has to be planned for ground damp, sand and a new guest every night or two. This guide is written for camp operators, tent hotels and boutique guest houses.

Why a tent is harder to furnish than a room

Three facts about a tent change how you buy seating.

Canvas is not a wall. Sofhu states that its Arabic floor sofas are not freestanding and need a wall or something hard behind them. A backrest pushed against a sloping tent wall will slide. You need a rail, a panel or a frame.

The ground is wet. Even desert ground can turn damp at night, and grass is damp for much of the day. Foam that sits on the ground takes it in from below.

Guests change constantly. A home majlis is washed a few times a year. Camp covers may come off every week in season. Zipped, removable covers are not optional.

Tent sizes and seating runs

Measure the usable wall, not the diameter. Bell tents are commonly sold in 4 m, 5 m and 6 m sizes, and their side walls are low, so a backrest cannot stand right at the edge. A seat ends up some way in from the canvas, and the run it can make is shorter than the tent looks.

A rough guide, at about 60 cm of seat per adult:

TentTypical useSeating that fits
4 m bell tentDouble bed for twoA two-seat run of about 1.2 to 1.5 m, or floor cushions only
5 m bell tentDouble bed, lounge sideOne straight run of about 2 m for three, plus ottoman
6 m bell tentFamily tent or small loungeAn L of two runs, five to six seats
Large frame or safari tentShared majlis tentA U on three sides, sized from the frame

These are planning figures drawn from tent sellers’ size guides and simple arithmetic. Sofhu cuts each run to the length you send, so measure the straight line where the seat will actually stand.

One floor sofa, a rug, an ottoman and three floor cushions seat a family and still leave a path to the bed. This is the set to picture in a guest tent.

For the shared tent, the majlis tent where guests gather for coffee and dinner, plan it like a room. Our majlis for events page covers large tents, and the outdoor majlis page shows the outdoor range.

Ground damp and platforms

Keep the foam off the ground. Everything else follows from that.

  • Timber deck. The standard glamping answer. A deck with an air gap keeps the base dry and gives you something to fix a backrest rail to.
  • Pallet or slatted base. Works under a single seating run where there is no deck. Cover it with a rug.
  • Groundsheet and rug only. Acceptable for short stays on dry ground. Lift the cushions each morning.

For the back support, a rail or boarded panel fixed to the deck behind the seat is enough. Make it at least as long as the seating run.

The simpler route is a wooden bench frame. Sofhu’s outdoor benches carry their own back and arms and hold the cushions well clear of the floor.

Two benches set around a low table make a complete seating area on any hard standing. Nothing here depends on a wall.

For desert trips and sunset setups away from the tents, Sofhu’s foldable, portable outdoor mat is the lightest option. It goes out on a rug and comes back in the same evening.

The folding mat has its own back support and an armrest, so it stands on open sand. This beige one is set for tea with a dallah and a basket of fruit.

Fabrics for sand and sun

Choose the cover for the worst day of the season, not the brochure photograph.

  • Sand and dust. A smooth, tight weave releases sand when it is shaken or brushed. Deep pile holds it. Mid-tone patterns hide what remains.
  • Damp and showers. Sofhu describes its outdoor fabrics as water-resistant and able to handle light rain and moisture, with spills that wipe away. That is not the same as waterproof. Bring cushions under cover in heavy rain, and ask Sofhu before leaving any set outside permanently.
  • Heat. Sofhu describes its linen as breathable, with a porous structure that feels fresh in hot weather. It suits shaded lounge tents.
  • Sun. No light-fastness rating is published for any fabric. Strong sun fades most textiles over time, so keep seating inside the shade line of the tent and rotate cushions between sunny and shaded positions.
  • Washing. All covers are zipped. The site gives 30 degrees as the machine wash temperature and says not to tumble dry.

The cushions themselves are filled with 32 kg/m³ (32 DNS) high-density foam and contain no springs, so there is no metal to rust in a damp tent. Denser foam generally keeps its height longer, which matters when a seat is used daily for a whole season.

Sadu patterns and the Bedouin tent look

The striped, geometric look guests expect in a desert camp comes from sadu weaving. Sadu is the warp-faced weaving of Bedouin women, traditionally in wool, goat hair and camel hair, with narrow bands of triangles and diamonds in black, white, brown, beige and red. In the black goat-hair tent, the men’s side where visitors are welcomed was separated from the family side by a long woven divider, and guests sat on rugs with cushions to lean on.

Sofhu’s sadu-pattern sets use upholstery fabric woven with these motifs. They are not hand-woven sadu, and you should describe them accurately to guests.

Pack-down between seasons

Seasonal camps should plan the last day when they place the order.

  1. Strip the covers. Wash and dry them completely. Label each by tent.
  2. Air the foam. Stand the inserts on edge in a dry, shaded place for a day or more.
  3. Stack by type. Seats flat, backrests and armrests on top. The sets are modular, so the pieces are regular shapes.
  4. Store high and dry. Indoors, on shelving or pallets, under a breathable cotton sheet.
  5. Check before reopening. Look for marks, mustiness and flattened corners, and re-order covers early.

New sets arrive vacuum packed, which keeps the parcels small for remote sites. Open the bags without sharp tools and give the foam time to recover its shape. Our guide to how a majlis is packed and delivered explains the process.

Guest experience details

Small things decide whether guests use the seating or just photograph it.

  • A place for shoes. Put a mat and a low rack at the tent door. Sand stays outside.
  • A tray at every seat. An ottoman or low table within reach of each run for coffee, dates and a phone.
  • Light at seat level. Lanterns on the floor, not overhead.
  • One raised seat. Some guests cannot get down to the floor. A bench or chair in every tent, or at least in the shared tent, solves it.
  • A blanket. Desert and mountain nights are cold. Keep one folded on each seat.

Boutique hotels and guest houses can use the same pieces indoors. A boutique hotel majlis in a lobby corner, on a roof terrace or in a courtyard room works exactly like a home set. Indoors the choice widens to Sofhu’s second product. The Arabic floor sofa used in the tents is a low set of loose cushions on a seat mattress. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height on an upholstered base with tall fixed backs and arm bolsters, and it suits a lobby or courtyard room with solid walls. The beige flame-kilim set in the gallery is one. The existing article on Arabic majlis for hotels shows examples, and balcony and patio majlis ideas covers small terraces.

Questions

Before you order

What seating works in a glamping tent?

Low seating along one side, with the bed opposite. A single floor sofa with an ottoman and floor cushions fits most guest tents. Because canvas cannot support a backrest, either build a low rail behind the seat or use a wooden bench frame with cushions, which stands on its own and keeps the foam off the ground.

How do you protect floor cushions from ground damp?

Lift them. A timber deck or pallet platform with an air gap is the reliable answer, with a groundsheet and a rug on top. Unzip covers and stand cushions on edge to air whenever a tent is empty. On bare ground, choose bench frames or a folding mat that can be picked up each night.

What fabric handles sand best?

A tight, flat weave. Sand shakes and brushes out of a smooth woven surface, while a deep pile holds it. Sofhu describes its outdoor fabrics as water-resistant and easy to wipe, and its linen as breathable in hot weather. Mid-tone patterns in sand, red or brown hide dust far better than white or black.

Can majlis seating be stored between seasons?

Yes. The sets are modular, so seats, backrests and armrests stack. Wash and fully dry the covers first, then store everything indoors, off the floor, under a breathable sheet. Avoid sealing foam in plastic while it holds any moisture. Sofhu does not publish storage instructions, so ask the team for advice on your climate.

How many seats fit a bell tent?

Fewer than the floor area suggests, because the walls slope. In a 5 m bell tent with a double bed, expect one straight run of about 2 m, which seats three adults, plus an ottoman and floor cushions for two or three more. A tent used only as a lounge can take seating around most of its edge.

Does Sofhu supply hotels and camps in bulk?

Yes. Sofhu is a manufacturer and takes wholesale enquiries from small and large businesses. Each tent or room can still be made to its own measurements. Minimum quantities and trade terms are not published, so send the number of units, your site location and your opening date, and ask for a quote.
