A Kuwaiti diwaniya (ديوانية كويتية) is a reception hall attached to a house, with its own entrance from outside, where a host receives male guests on regular evenings. The word also means the gathering itself. The hall is usually U-shaped. Sofhu makes diwaniya seating in Türkiye to your wall measurements, with 32 kg/m³ foam and free worldwide shipping.

The same evening each week, the outer door is opened, the lights go on and the coffee is made. Friends arrive without an invitation because none is needed. That is a Kuwaiti diwaniya: a room, and at the same time the standing gathering that takes place in it. Furnishing one is a different job from furnishing a guest room that is used a few times a year, and this page is written with that in mind.

What a Kuwaiti diwaniya is
A diwaniya is a reception hall where a man receives business colleagues and male guests, and the word now also means the gathering itself. Family diwans began in the 18th century as extensions built onto houses. An academic study of the institution describes it as both the physical room and the practice of congregating in it, and as a social anchor first of all, whatever political use it is also put to.
That range is wide. Election candidates tour the diwaniyas of a district. Other diwaniyas are relaxed: cards, shisha and a football match on the screen. The room has to serve all of it.
The word comes from diwan, and it is also used in Iraq. Our page on the Iraqi diwaniya and mudhif follows that branch.
The room: its own door and a U-shaped hall
Two features set the diwaniya apart as a room. The first is the entrance. A diwaniya is part of the house but has its own door from outside, so guests come and go without passing through the family’s rooms. The second is the plan. The family diwan is usually a U-shaped hall, with the elders seated at the head.
For furniture this means three runs of seating and one open side. The open side is the door wall. The head of the U is the wall facing the door, and it is where the most senior guests sit.

Diwaniya seating: floor-level or raised
There is no single correct height for diwaniya seating, and we will not pretend the sources settle it. We found no reliable source that fixes one, so the sensible course is to choose by how the room is used.
| Use of the room | Seating that suits it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Formal evenings, older guests | Arabic majlis, raised to sofa height | Easier to sit down and stand up |
| Friends, cards, watching sport | Arabic floor sofa | Relaxed, easy to stretch out |
| Mixed ages | Majlis on the head wall, floor sofas on the sides | Each guest finds a seat that suits |
| Garden room or tent | Floor sofa, modular | Light to move and rearrange |
Sofhu makes both, as two separate products. The Arabic majlis is raised, sofa-height seating in upholstered units with fixed backs and arm bolsters, like the taupe velvet U at the top of this page and the mustard U above. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set of seat mattresses, loose back cushions and armrests, like the gray and gold kilim L further down. Wooden bench sets with cushions are a third option. For a fuller comparison, read floor seating versus a raised diwan.
Majlis design for a Kuwait home: planning the U
Good majlis design in a Kuwait house starts with the head wall. Measure it first, then the two side walls, then mark the door. A few points decide whether the U works:
- Corners. Two runs meet at each corner. Tell us which run should go into the corner at full length, so the other is cut to butt against it.
- The door wall. Leave it clear. If a side run must stop short of the door, give us the distance from the corner to the door frame.
- Armrests. Each armrest marks a place and gives two neighbours something to lean on. More armrests mean more defined places and slightly fewer of them.
- The centre. An ottoman and a rug make the middle of the U usable for serving. Loose floor cushions add places on a full evening.
The seating needs a wall behind it. Neither a majlis nor a floor sofa is freestanding, so a run cannot float across the open side of the room. Our guides to how many people a majlis seats and to L-shape and U-shape layouts will help you sketch it before you write to us.

Sadu, medallions and colour
Kuwait is a centre of sadu weaving. The traditional weaving of sadu was inscribed by UNESCO in 2020 for Kuwait and Saudi Arabia together. Sadu is woven in narrow bands of geometric motifs, and its look has passed into upholstery fabrics. Sofhu’s sadu-pattern and kilim-pattern fabrics are upholstery cloth in that spirit, not hand-loomed sadu. The story of the craft is on the Bedouin majlis and sadu page.
For a more formal diwaniya, one direction is plain velvet with a single strong detail. A gold embroidered medallion at the centre of each backrest is one such detail, as on the navy piece below. Navy, burgundy and chocolate all sit well in a room lit mostly in the evening.

If you are unsure, start from the fixed things in the room: the floor, the curtains and the wall colour. How to choose majlis colours walks through it.
Diwaniya furniture built for weekly use
A diwaniya is sat on every week by the same people in the same places. That is a hard test for a cushion.
Sofhu fills its seats with 32 kg/m³ (32 DNS) polyurethane foam and uses no springs. Density is the weight of material in a cubic metre of foam, not its hardness. Denser foam generally keeps its original height and support for longer than light foam, which can feel firm on the first day and recover less well afterwards. If the head of the room should feel firmer than the side runs, say so: on a custom order you can ask for a softer or firmer foam. The foam density guide explains what to ask any seller.
The covers matter as much. Every cover has a zip, comes off, and can be machine washed at 30°C. The pieces are modular, so the seats that take the most use can be swapped with those that take the least.
