How many people does the room need to seat on its busiest day? In the Ruhr that is the question to begin with, because one family visit can fill a living room. A majlis sofa in Essen answers it with seating on two or three walls instead of one. Sofhu makes the set in Türkiye to your measurements and sends it to your door with free shipping. It makes two kinds: the Arabic majlis, raised to sofa height with an upholstered base and fixed backs, and the Arabic floor sofa, floor-level seating built from a seat mattress, loose back cushions and armrest blocks.

Essen and the Ruhr: many communities, one way of hosting

Essen and the wider Ruhr area are home to large Turkish, Lebanese and Syrian communities, and Essen has one of the biggest Lebanese-origin populations in Germany. Arab shops, bakeries and shisha bars are a familiar part of several districts. Kurdish families are part of the picture too.

The conurbation runs without a break into Duisburg, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen and Bochum, and this page serves all of them.

What these households share is the habit of receiving guests on seating that lines the walls. The pages on Syrian and Levantine Arabic seating, the Turkish sedir and the Kurdish diwan describe where each version comes from.

A rectangular room is the easy case

Much of the Ruhr’s housing is post-war flats, and their living rooms are plain, regular rectangles. For a majlis that is good news. There are no bays or odd angles to work around, so the seating can be cut to simple lengths and will sit tight in the corners.

Grey velvet, gold stripes and a dark patterned base give the L-shaped set a tailored look.

An L-shaped majlis makes its footprint clear: one long run, one shorter run, and more than half the room left open.

Use this as a quick guide.

The U-shape at the top of this page is the full version: three walls of seating with the centre open for a rug, a low table or children playing. What a complete set contains at each size is set out on the majlis sofa set page.

How to measure, in five minutes

  1. Measure every wall that will carry seating, at floor level, from corner to corner.
  2. Mark the door, the radiator and the balcony door, each with its distance from the nearest corner.
  3. Note which wall the television is on.
  4. Photograph the room from the doorway.
  5. Send it all to Sofhu with the layout you want.

Count only solid wall. A majlis is built to stand along it, and the back cushions of a floor sofa need it to lean on.

Built for daily use

A set in a busy family room is sat on every day, by adults and children alike. Two things make that sustainable.

The first is the foam. Sofhu fills its cushions with foam of 32 kg/m³ density and uses no springs. Density is what helps a cushion keep its height; a light foam can feel firm at first and flatten sooner. You can still choose a softer or firmer feel.

The second is the cover. Every cover has a zip, comes off and, as Sofhu states, can be washed at 30°C. Patterned weaves, such as the kilim design on the floor sofa below, are forgiving of everyday marks.

Add-ons such as a matching rug and an ottoman used as a coffee table can be ordered with the seating or left out.

Gardens, terraces and shisha lounges

If you have a terrace or a garden, the same way of sitting moves outside in summer. Sofhu makes wooden bench sets with cushions in water-resistant fabric, which the company says cope with light rain and moisture.

Business owners are a second group of buyers in the Ruhr. For cafés and shisha bars, read the guide to hookah lounge seating layout and Sofhu’s existing page on majlis seating for cafés and shisha cafés.

Delivery across the Ruhr

Sofhu is the manufacturer and ships free worldwide, with no regional depot. Cushions are vacuum packed for the journey and expand after you open the bags by hand.

Because the goods come from Türkiye, duty or tax may apply depending on the destination. Ask Sofhu before you order. The existing page on the Arabic sofa in Germany gives the national overview, and there are city pages for a majlis sofa in Cologne and a majlis sofa in Berlin. In German, see the page on the arabische Sitzgarnitur.

Questions

Before you order

Do you deliver to Duisburg, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen and Bochum as well as Essen?

Yes. Shipping is free to any address, so the whole Ruhr conurbation is covered on the same basis as Essen. The set is sent from Türkiye in vacuum-packed parcels straight to your home; there is no pick-up point in the region.

Is there a furniture store in Essen that carries Sofhu?

No. Sofhu is a manufacturer that sells direct and has no retailer or stock in Essen. Every set is made to order for one room. You plan it by sending measurements and photos, and a designer can talk it through with you on a video call.

L-shape or U-shape for a large family?

If three walls are free, a U-shape seats the most people and lets everyone see each other. If the room is also where you watch television or has a door on the third wall, choose an L-shape and add floor cushions and an ottoman for the days when everyone comes.

Can Sofhu furnish a shisha bar or café in the Ruhr?

Yes. Sofhu makes seating for cafés, shisha lounges and restaurants and takes wholesale enquiries from businesses of any size. Send a floor plan with the wall lengths and the positions of doors and service areas, and the set will be designed around them.

What does a U-shaped majlis cost delivered to Essen?

There is no list price, because the total length, the fabric and the extras differ for every room. Shipping is free. Send your measurements for a quote, and ask whether import duty or VAT applies in Germany, which Sofhu can clarify before you order.
