The short answer

In Cologne, where Turkish sedir seating and the Arabic majlis are both well understood, Sofhu supplies both: raised, upholstered Arabic majlis sets, low kilim-pattern floor sofas for a şark köşesi, and carved-frame Turkish majlis sets. Each is made in Türkiye to the customer's wall measurements, filled with 32 kg/m³ foam, and shipped to Cologne free of charge.

Ask for this furniture in Cologne and you may hear two words for it. One neighbour says sedir, another says majlis, a third says şark köşesi. They are describing close relatives: cushioned seating that follows the wall and brings the family and its guests together. If you are looking for a majlis sofa in Cologne, Sofhu makes all of these to order in Türkiye and ships them to you free.

A Turkish city within the city

Cologne is one of the centres of Turkish life in Germany. Keupstraße in Mülheim is the city’s best-known Turkish shopping street, and Weidengasse is another. The city also has Arab communities, including families of Tunisian and Iraqi origin.

So both vocabularies are at home here.

WordWhere it comes fromWhat it describes
SedirTürkiyeA raised seat built along the wall
Şark köşesiTürkiyeA low corner set, often in kilim fabric
MajlisArab worldThe guest room and the seating that lines it
DiwanKurdish and Arab usageThe guest room, or a long seat

In the old Turkish house the sedir ran under the windows, and the corner furthest from the door was the place of honour. The page on the Turkish sedir and şark köşesi tells that story, and the Kurdish diwan has its own.

Three ways Sofhu builds it

Arabic majlis. The grey velvet set at the top of this page is a majlis in Sofhu’s sense of the word: raised to sofa height on an upholstered base, with tall fixed backs, arm bolsters and trim. It is the formal choice for a room kept for guests. The Arabic majlis page covers the range.

Black armrests and cushions give the pale grey L-shaped set its contrast.

Arabic floor sofas. This is the low product, and it is what a şark köşesi is made of: a seat mattress at floor level, loose back cushions and armrest blocks, usually in a kilim-pattern weave with a matching rug. The Arabic floor sofa page shows the kilim, medallion and velvet versions.

Carved-frame Turkish majlis. For those who want wood, the Turkish majlis by Sofhu is built on a solid beech frame with hand-carved details. It is furniture on legs, neither an upholstered majlis unit nor a floor sofa.

The broader oriental sofa page shows how these lines relate.

Fitting a set into a post-war flat

Much of Cologne’s housing is in post-war apartment blocks. Rooms are practical and rectangular, with a window wall, a radiator beneath it and a door in the opposite corner. That shape takes an L-shaped set well: one run on the long wall, one on the short wall away from the door.

Before you order:

  1. Measure each wall at floor level, corner to corner.
  2. Mark the radiator, the door swing and the balcony door.
  3. Decide where the television goes, since a U-shape leaves no wall for it.
  4. Remember that both a majlis and a floor sofa are planned against the walls and are not meant to stand free in the room.

The step-by-step method is in how to measure a room for a majlis.

Fabric and filling for a mild, damp climate

Cologne’s weather is mild and often damp. Indoors that means little more than sensible habits: covers that can be washed and aired, and seating that is easy to lift for cleaning.

Sofhu’s covers are zippered and come off the foam. The foam itself is 32 kg/m³ polyurethane with no springs, a density that helps the seat keep its height under daily use. If you want a softer or firmer seat, ask; firmness is chosen separately.

For a balcony or garden, Sofhu also makes wooden bench sets with cushions in water-resistant fabric, described as able to handle light rain and moisture.

See the outdoor sofas and benches page for those.

Delivery to Cologne

Sofhu manufactures the sets itself and ships free worldwide. The cushions arrive vacuum packed and expand once the bags are opened by hand. There is no depot or display in Cologne.

Goods from Türkiye may be subject to duty or tax depending on the destination, so ask Sofhu before ordering. The existing page on the Arabic sofa in Germany covers the country, and there are city pages for a majlis sofa in Berlin and a majlis sofa in Essen. German and Turkish speakers may prefer the page on the Sark Köşesi.

Questions

Before you order

What is the difference between a sedir and a majlis?

A sedir is the Turkish built-in seat: a raised platform along the wall, traditionally under the windows, dressed with cushions. A majlis is the Arab guest room and its seating, which Sofhu builds as raised, upholstered units around the walls. Both line the room and leave the centre open, which is why one maker can serve both tastes.

Can I see Sofhu sets in a shop on Keupstraße or Weidengasse?

No. Sofhu does not sell through shops in Cologne and holds no stock in Germany. It manufactures in Türkiye and sells direct to the customer, building each set to order. Designs and fabrics are chosen from photos and video, with a designer available on a video call.

Is a floor sofa a good idea in a damp climate?

It can be, with ordinary care. Choose covers that come off and wash, air the room as you normally would, and keep the seating a little clear of any wall that shows condensation in winter. Sofhu's covers are zippered and removable, and the company states they can be machine washed at 30°C.

Can the seating run under a window with a radiator?

It is better not to cover a radiator. The run can stop before it, or the set can be placed on the other walls. Mark every radiator on your sketch with its distance from the corner, and Sofhu will plan the lengths around it.

How do I find out the price for my room in Cologne?

Send your wall measurements, photos and the style you prefer. Sofhu prices each set by quote, as size, layout and fabric differ every time. Shipping is free. Ask at the same time whether any import tax applies in Germany, as it may depending on the destination.
