For a Dearborn Heights ranch or bungalow, a majlis sofa is usually planned for the finished basement or the family room. Sofhu makes each Arabic seating set to measure in Türkiye, working around support posts, stairs and vents, with 32 kg/m³ foam and washable covers. The modular pieces go down a basement stair easily, and shipping to Michigan is free.

Go down the stairs of a post-war ranch in Dearborn Heights and you often find the real living room of the house. The finished basement is where the family gathers, where the cousins end up on Eid, and where a full Arabic seating set has the wall space it needs. This page is about planning a majlis sofa in Dearborn Heights for that room and for the family room upstairs.
Sofhu makes two kinds of Arabic seating. The Arabic majlis, shown in the photos here, is raised to sofa height, with an upholstered base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is the low one: a seat mattress near the floor with loose back cushions, an ottoman and floor pillows. Either can be made for a basement.
The finished basement as the family majlis
A basement suits Arabic seating for simple reasons. It has long uninterrupted walls, few windows to work around, and no route through it to another room. That is the ideal case for a U-shape: seating on three walls, a rug in the middle, everyone facing each other.
The hero image above shows the idea with a black and cream majlis on three walls and the floor left open. The same layout in taupe and gold looks like this:

Because Sofhu’s sets are modular, getting them downstairs is not the obstacle it is with a sectional. A majlis is built in separate units that go down the stair one by one. A floor sofa is easier still: its seat mattresses, back cushions and armrest blocks arrive vacuum packed. The basement majlis ideas article has more on lighting and ceiling height.
Measuring a basement properly
Basements hide more surprises than rooms upstairs, so measure with these in mind:
- Support posts. Note the distance from the nearest corner and the post’s width.
- Soffits and ducts. A low boxed-in duct along a wall rarely gets in the way, but mention it, because a majlis has tall backs.
- The stair. Give the clear width and say whether it turns.
- Vents and the sump or utility door. Seating should not cover a floor register or block access.
- Baseboards. Measure wall length at floor level, where the seating will sit.
Send those with a quick sketch. Sofhu cuts the runs to the numbers you give, so a careful ten minutes with a tape measure is the most useful thing you can do.
The family room upstairs
Not every household wants the whole ground floor at one level. In a family room, many people keep the sofa they have and add a single row or an L-shape on the other walls. A floor sofa there gives children low seats while grandparents keep a chair height they are comfortable with. A majlis, like the dusty blue L-shape below, sits at sofa height, so everyone is level. The guide to mixing a majlis with western furniture shows how to make the two look intended.

If the room is mostly for the children, a family majlis with kids covers fabric and layout choices, and if it faces a screen, see floor seating for a home cinema or gaming room.
Who lives here and what they order
Dearborn Heights sits immediately west of Dearborn and has a large and growing Arab-American population, with Lebanese, Iraqi and Yemeni families among it. Housing is largely post-war ranches and bungalows with finished basements.
The same seating does different jobs in different households. Some families want a formal Arabic sofa in velvet for receiving guests. Others want a hard-wearing everyday set for the room where the family actually lives. Sofhu’s main Arabic majlis page shows the range, and the neighbouring Dearborn page looks at front-room and Yemeni-style sets.
Foam, fabric and the rug below
A room below ground runs cooler than the rest of the house, so the base layer matters. Lay a rug or carpet first and set the seating on it. The article on what size rug goes with a majlis helps with proportions.
The cushions are filled with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam and have no springs. Denser foam generally keeps its height longer, which counts in a room used daily by a large family. For covers, velvet and chenille feel warm and wear well; all covers unzip for machine washing at 30 degrees.
