A majlis sofa in Detroit is ordered to fit the house, and houses vary widely across the metro. Sofhu, a manufacturer in Türkiye, makes raised majlis sets and low floor sofas in Arabic, Yemeni and Iraqi styles to your wall measurements with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam and ships it free anywhere in Metro Detroit, from narrow Hamtramck front rooms to large suburban guest rooms.
On this page
Metro Detroit has one of the largest and most varied Middle Eastern populations in North America. Lebanese, Yemeni, Iraqi, Chaldean, Syrian and Palestinian communities are spread across Dearborn, Hamtramck, Warren, Sterling Heights and the city itself. That variety is why a majlis sofa in Detroit cannot be one product. The word covers a Yemeni perimeter room, an Iraqi guest hall and a Lebanese formal sofa, in houses that range from a narrow two-flat to a wide suburban colonial.
This page is the overview. It points to the right local page and explains what applies everywhere in the metro.
Where the metro sits down
| Area | Largest communities | Typical homes | Layout that tends to fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dearborn | Lebanese, Yemeni, Iraqi | Brick bungalows and colonials | U-shape in a front room or basement |
| Dearborn Heights | Lebanese, with Iraqi and Yemeni | Post-war ranches with finished basements | Basement U-shape, family room L |
| Hamtramck | Yemeni, Bangladeshi | Narrow early-1900s frame homes, two-flats | Single row or compact L |
| Sterling Heights | Chaldean and other Iraqi | Larger ranches and colonials | Full U in a dedicated guest room |
Each has its own guide: Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Hamtramck and Sterling Heights. The statewide picture is on the Michigan page.

Inside the city limits
Within Detroit, Arab and Muslim households are found on the west side in the Warrendale area, next to Dearborn, and along the Hamtramck border in the neighbourhood known as Banglatown. City houses vary a great deal from one block to the next, so the planning advice is simple: measure carefully, keep door swings clear, and let the layout follow the two best walls.
The set at the top of this page is a good model for that kind of room. It is an L-shaped majlis in grey velvet with gold-striped backs, set into one corner so the rest of the floor stays free.
Cold winters and forced-air heat
Detroit winters are long, and most houses are heated by forced air through floor or wall registers. Both facts bear on the order.
Dense foam and heavier upholstery suit the climate. Sofhu fills its cushions with 32 kg/m³ high-density polyurethane foam, without springs. Denser foam generally keeps its support longer than light foam, and a set that is sat on every evening from October to April needs that. The article on foam density for floor seating explains the numbers. Velvet, chenille and suede-look covers feel warmer than linen, and a rug beneath the seating takes the chill off a floor over a basement or crawl space.
Registers need planning. Mark every one on your sketch. A seat run can break either side of a floor register, and backrests should not sit over a wall vent.

Two products, several traditions
Whatever name your family uses, Sofhu builds the room from one of two products. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height, with an upholstered base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is low: seat mattresses on the floor, loose back cushions and armrest blocks, usually with an ottoman and floor pillows. Both appear in the photos here, and the navy star sets are floor sofas. A rug and curtains are options with either. After that, what changes is the specification.
- A Yemeni majlis in Detroit is often ordered as a full perimeter with an armrest per sitter. See the Yemeni diwan and mafraj guide.
- An Iraqi-style room puts the emphasis on size and on seating many guests at once.
- A Lebanese or Syrian sitting room looks back to the low continuous sofa of the Levantine reception room, and is often ordered today as a formal row or an L.
If the vocabulary is confusing, majlis, diwan, jalsa, sedari, toshak: names by country sorts it out, and the Middle Eastern sofa hub shows floor sofas and other low seating together.

How delivery works across Metro Detroit
Sofhu is the manufacturer. It has no store or stock in Michigan, and every set is made after the order is confirmed. The finished pieces are vacuum packed and sent to your address with free shipping. Because the set is modular, the parcels go through an ordinary front door and down a basement stair. Open the bags without a blade and let the foam recover.
Import duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination. Sofhu can tell you what to expect before you commit.
Start with a tape measure
Measure the walls at floor level, mark doors, registers and low windows, take a photo, and decide roughly which layout you want. Then get a quote by measurement or send everything on WhatsApp. The design can be talked through on a video call before anything is cut.
