Floor Seating for a Home Cinema or Gaming Room

Use an Arabic floor sofa as seating in a home cinema or gaming room: screen height, two-tier rows, back support for long sessions and fabrics for dark rooms.

The short answer

Floor seating works well in a home cinema or gaming room if the screen is lowered to match. Mount the picture so its centre is close to your seated eye level, put the main row against the back wall, and use floor cushions or an ottoman as the front row. Sofhu builds the seating to your wall measurements with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam.

Can a room built around a screen use the same seating as a room built around a coffee pot? It can, and it suits the job well. Home cinema floor seating gives you a wide, deep seat with a proper backrest, room for the whole family and their friends, and nothing mechanical to break. An Arabic floor sofa is a set of modules: seat mattresses, loose back cushions, armrest blocks, floor cushions and an ottoman. Arranged to face one wall, those pieces make a media room.

A word on names, because Sofhu makes two products. The Arabic floor sofa is the low, loose-cushion set this article is about. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height and fully upholstered, with a solid base and tall fixed backs; it suits a formal guest room more than a screen room, though it can serve as a higher back row.

What changes is the geometry. In a majlis room people face each other. In a cinema or gaming room everyone faces the screen, and they sit lower than the furniture industry expects. Plan for both and the room works.

Eye height and screen position

Set the screen for the seat, not for the wall. The comfortable position for a long film is looking straight ahead or slightly down at the middle of the picture. Looking up strains the neck, and on floor-level seating a television hung at the usual living-room height is always too high.

Measure it in the room:

  1. Sit on the seat in your normal film posture, leaning into the backrest.
  2. Have someone measure from the floor to your eyes.
  3. Mark that height on the screen wall with tape.
  4. Position the screen so its centre sits at the mark or a little below.

For a television this usually means a low media unit and no wall bracket. For a projector it means dropping the image until its lower edge is not far above the floor, which is easier with floor seating than with chairs because no heads in front block the bottom of the picture.

Distance matters as well. Sit far enough back that you can take in the whole picture without turning your head, and close enough that it fills your view. Since the main row will be on the back wall, the depth of the room decides the screen size more than the other way round.

Two tiers with different seat heights

Put the main row against the back wall and build the front row from loose pieces. This is the point where floor sofas differ from cinema chairs: they are not freestanding. The backrests lean on a wall or another solid surface, so a full sofa row cannot float in the middle of the room.

That leaves three workable plans.

PlanHow it is builtBest for
One row plus cushionsSofa on the back wall, floor cushions and ottoman in frontFamilies, small rooms
U-shape facing the screenBack wall and two side walls, screen on the fourthGaming with friends, sport
Built two-tierRaised platform at the back with a solid front edge that the lower row leans onDedicated cinema rooms

In the first plan the tiers come for free. Adults sit on the sofa, children lie on the floor cushions in front and look over nobody. Sofhu sets can include matching floor cushions and an ottoman, like the three cushions in the photo above. See the live floor cushion page for how they are made.

A U-shape is the sociable option. People on the side runs sit at an angle to the screen, which is fine for a match or a game and less good for a long film. Keep the side runs short and seat the keenest viewers on the back wall.

For a built two-tier room, different heights can be made within one order: Sofhu offers different cushion thicknesses for a floor sofa, and its raised majlis sits at sofa height. The platform itself is a job for your builder. Send us its dimensions and the seating is made to fit it. The L-shape and U-shape layouts guide and how to measure a room explain what to write down.

Back support for long sessions

A film is two hours; a gaming session can be longer. Comfort over that time comes from the backrest and the firmness of the seat more than from softness.

  • A real backrest. A floor sofa’s back cushion is a firm upholstered block standing against the wall. It supports the whole back, which loose floor cushions and bean bags do not. Our comparison of majlis, floor cushions and bean bags covers the difference.
  • A firm seat. Sofhu cushions use 32 kg/m³ (32 DNS) high-density foam with no springs. Density tells you how much material is in the foam, and denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer. That matters in the one spot in the house where the same person sits in the same place every night.
  • Armrest blocks where you want them. They are loose, so set one on each side of the main gaming seat as a rest for the elbows and a place for a controller.
  • Change position. The advantage of a deep, flat seat is that you can sit cross-legged, stretch your legs out or lie along it. Use it. Nobody is comfortable for hours in one posture.

If you are new to low seating, is floor seating comfortable is an honest account of what to expect in the first weeks.

Fabrics and colours for dark rooms

Choose dark and matte. A media room is the one place where the seating should disappear when the lights go down.

  • Colour. Charcoal, navy, deep green or burgundy. Pale seating near the screen reflects the picture back into the room and lifts the black level you paid for. The grey floor sofa at the top of this page is the right idea.
  • Surface. Flat weaves and chenille reflect less than satin or a high-sheen velvet. Sofhu describes its chenille as shedding very little.
  • Pattern. A quiet pattern or a tone-on-tone weave hides crumbs and drink marks better than a plain cloth. Keep bold metallic trim off the wall facing the screen.
  • Cleaning. Covers are zipped and removable, and Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C. In a room where people eat in the dark, that is worth more than any stain treatment.

For restrained designs, the modern Arabic sofa page shows plainer sets that sit easily beside a screen and speakers.

Example layout

Take a spare room or basement with the screen on one short wall. No numbers here, only the order of decisions.

  1. Back wall. A single-row sofa across the full width, with two armrest blocks dividing it into places.
  2. Side wall. A short return on the side away from the door to make an L, for the people who talk through films.
  3. Floor. A thick rug from the sofa towards the screen, an ottoman as a footrest and snack table, and floor cushions in front of it for children.
  4. Screen wall. A low unit, the screen centred at seated eye level, speakers either side.
  5. Cables and power. Sockets and consoles on the screen wall, with nothing trailing across the rug. Plan charging points near the sofa before the seating arrives.
  6. Light. Curtains that close fully, and one dim lamp behind the seating so nobody trips on the way out.

If the room is a North American basement, our basement majlis ideas page deals with low ceilings, cold floors and stairs.

Getting it made

Send the room, and say it is for a screen. Sofhu is the manufacturer and makes each set in Türkiye from your wall measurements, so tell us which wall the screen is on, where the door is and whether you want a raised back tier. Fabric, colour and foam feel are chosen at the same time. Shipping is free worldwide; duties or taxes may apply depending on where you live, so ask first.

Start with the Arabic floor sofa overview if you are still choosing a style, then get a quote by measurement or message us on WhatsApp with photos of the room.

Questions

Before you order

Is floor seating good for a home cinema?

Yes, provided the screen comes down with you. Low seating gives a deep, relaxed posture, room to stretch out and space for more people than a row of recliners. The usual mistake is leaving a television at standing height, which has everyone looking up for two hours.

How high should the screen be for floor seating?

Sit on the seat as you would for a film and have someone measure from the floor to your eyes. The middle of the picture should be near that height or a little below it. There is no fixed figure, because it depends on the seat and the person, so measure once the seating is in place.

Can I make tiered rows with floor sofas?

You can make two tiers: a main row on the back wall and a lower front row of floor cushions or an ottoman. A second full sofa row in the middle of the room is harder, because floor sofas lean on a wall and need something solid behind them, such as a built platform edge.

What fabric is best for a media room?

A dark, matte, tightly woven fabric. It reflects less light back at the screen and hides the marks that snacks leave. Shiny satins and pale velvets catch the picture's glow. Sofhu covers are zipped and removable, which matters more in this room than in any other.

Is a firm seat better for gaming?

For most players, yes. A firm seat keeps the hips steady and the back upright, which helps when you are leaning in with a controller. Sofhu describes its cushions as firm, and on a custom order you can ask for a softer or firmer foam if you prefer to sink in for films.

Does floor seating help the sound in a media room?

Soft furnishings absorb some reflected sound, so a room lined with upholstered seating, a thick rug and curtains usually sounds less echoey than a bare one. It will not replace proper acoustic treatment in a dedicated cinema, but it is a useful start in an ordinary living room or basement.
