A ready-made floor sofa set comes in fixed sizes, sometimes as covers without filling, and often with no stated foam density. A custom set, whether a floor sofa or a raised majlis, is cut to your wall lengths with the foam, fabric and piece count agreed beforehand. Sofhu manufactures made-to-measure sets with 32 kg/m³ foam inserts included. Ready-made suits a quick single seat; custom suits a whole room.

Search for an Arabic floor sofa set online and the first page is a wall of near-identical photographs at very different prices. Some of those listings are good value. Some are a bag of empty covers. This page sets a ready-made floor sofa set vs a custom majlis or custom floor sofa side by side, and gives you a checklist that works on any listing, ours included. It is not an attack on anyone. Ready-made has its place, and we say where.
A note on names first. Marketplace listings use majlis and floor sofa for the same thing. Sofhu does not. Its Arabic floor sofa is the low set of loose cushions that most listings show, and its Arabic majlis is a raised, fully upholstered set at sofa height with a fixed back. Both are made to measure, and the comparison below applies to either.
Floor sofa set vs custom majlis: what listings include
A ready-made set is a fixed bundle in a fixed size. The usual bundle is one seat cushion, one or two back cushions and two armrests, sold as a “single” and multiplied to make an L or a U. Extras such as an ottoman, rug or floor cushions appear as options.
Listing titles are long strings of every possible name: majlis, floor sofa, Turkish sofa, diwan, Moroccan sofa, floor cushions for adults. The title is written for the search box. The facts that matter are lower down, in the description, or absent.
Four things are commonly unclear:
- whether the cushions come filled;
- what the foam is;
- how many pieces are in the option you have selected;
- whether the photograph shows the option you are paying for.
That last point catches many buyers. The main image often shows a full U-shaped room with rug and ottoman, while the selected option is one seat.

The photograph above shows what one seat with an ottoman, rug and three floor cushions looks like in a real room. It is a pleasant corner for a small family. It is not the wall-to-wall room in a headline image.
Cover-only sets: the common surprise
The most frequent disappointment with a cheap majlis sofa is opening the parcel and finding fabric with nothing inside. Cover-only sets exist for a sensible reason. Filled foam is bulky to ship, so some sellers send the covers and leave the buyer to source foam locally. For someone with a foam supplier nearby, that can work.
It becomes a problem when the listing does not say so clearly. Before buying, find the answer to three questions:
- Is filling included in the option I have selected?
- If not, what size of foam does each cover need?
- If so, what foam is it?
Buying foam yourself is rarely the saving it seems. You need the right dimensions for a snug fit, a density that will last, and someone to cut it. A cover stuffed with offcuts or soft packaging foam looks lumpy within a month.
For comparison, Sofhu’s position is simple: all covers include their foam inserts, and all covers are zippered so they can be removed for washing.
Fit: fixed sizes versus your walls
A ready made majlis is built to the seller’s module, and rooms do not come in modules. Suppose a wall leaves a gap of forty centimetres after the last seat. You cannot buy forty centimetres of a ready-made set. You live with the gap, or you push the set off centre.
Corners are harder. An L-shape needs a decision about which run goes into the corner and how the backrests meet. A U-shape needs both arms to end at the same point. Doors, radiators, low windows and sockets all sit in fixed places.
Made-to-measure work starts from the other end. You send the length of each wall and mark the obstacles. The maker divides those lengths into seats, decides the corners and tells you how many backrests and armrests the room needs. Sofhu produces from the measurements customers provide, in single-row, L-shaped or U-shaped layouts. One thing to remember for both kinds: floor sofas are not freestanding and need a wall or something solid behind them.

Seen from above, a fitted U-shape closes the room neatly, with both arms the same length and the corners resolved. The method is in how to measure a room for a majlis, and piece counts are explained in how many backrests and armrests you need.
Foam and fabric disclosure
The quality of a floor seat is mostly hidden inside it, so disclosure is the test. Foam is sold by density, the weight of material in a cubic metre. The Polyurethane Foam Association states that density affects durability and support, and that firmness is independent of density. In plain terms, a light, cheap foam can be made to feel hard on day one. Firmness in a product photo or a customer comment proves little about how the seat will hold up.
A listing that says “high-density foam” without a number has told you nothing you can check. A listing that gives a figure has. Sofhu states its figure: 32 kg/m³, written 32 DNS in the Turkish trade, which is about 2.0 lb/ft³. It is a solid mid-to-upper furniture density, not the highest that exists. What the number means is covered in foam density for floor seating.
Fabric deserves the same scrutiny. Look for the type of cloth, such as velvet, chenille, linen or a woven jacquard, and for a close-up photograph of the weave, seams and zip. Printed patterns on thin cloth photograph well and wear quickly. Ask whether the cover unzips, since a floor seat that cannot be washed will show every tea glass.
A word on reading any floor sofa set review. Reviews written in the first week describe the unboxing: colour, smell, how fast it arrived. They cannot tell you how the foam behaves after a year. Look for reviews that mention months of use, and treat a missing density figure as a gap no review can fill.
The light grey L-shape below is an Arabic majlis, the raised and fully upholstered kind, made to measure for its corner.

When ready-made is fine and when custom pays off
Ready-made is a reasonable choice in these cases:
- you want one bench for a reading corner, balcony or child’s room;
- the piece is for a short tenancy, a student flat or an event;
- the listing clearly states filling, density, dimensions and piece count, and those suit you;
- an approximate fit along the wall does not bother you.
Custom pays off in these cases:
- the seating must run along two or three walls and meet in corners;
- the room hosts guests regularly, so the same seats carry weight every week;
- you want a particular fabric, colour or pattern, or matching curtains, rug and ottoman;
- someone in the family needs a thicker seat, a firmer foam or a raised base;
- you want to deal with the maker, not a reseller, when you have a question.
In the custom vs ready made sofa decision, price is the honest difficulty. A made-to-measure set for a whole room costs more than a single ready-made bench, and comparing them is like comparing a fitted kitchen with one cabinet. Compare by seats and by years. The guide to what affects the price of a custom majlis explains what you are paying for, and Sofhu prices only by quote.
The listing checklist
Use this on any product page before you pay. Copy it into your notes.
- Filling: included, optional or covers only?
- Foam density: a number in kg/m³ or lb/ft³, in writing.
- Springs or frame: any, and what kind?
- Dimensions: length, depth and thickness of each seat, and the height of the backrest.
- Piece count: exact number of seats, backrests, armrests and extras in the selected option.
- Photograph: does it show the option selected, or a larger set?
- Fabric: type of cloth, and a close-up.
- Covers: zippered and washable, and at what temperature?
- Fit: can lengths be adjusted to your wall, and how is the corner handled?
- Shipping: cost to your country, and whether duties or taxes may apply on arrival.
- After-sales terms: what the seller commits to in writing if something arrives wrong.
- Who makes it: the manufacturer, or a reseller who cannot answer technical questions?
Put the same questions to us. Sofhu is the manufacturer and makes its sets in Türkiye. Sets are made to measure with 32 kg/m³ foam inserts and zippered covers, and shipping is free worldwide. Dimensions, piece count, price and terms depend on your room and country, so they are stated in your quote. Ask for anything on the list that the quote does not cover, including whether import duties or taxes may apply where you live.
