In many Luton homes the front room is not for the family at all. It is kept tidy for guests, and the door stays shut until someone calls. If you are furnishing that room, a majlis sofa in Luton is a natural choice: seating along the walls, an open floor in the middle, and space for more visitors than a suite allows. Sofhu makes it to your measurements in Türkiye and ships it free.

A front room kept for guests

Luton has a large Pakistani population, much of it of Kashmiri heritage, and a large Bangladeshi population, centred on Bury Park. Dunstable Road, its high street, is lined with South Asian and halal shops, and there are several mosques nearby. Terraced houses with a front room reserved for visitors are typical of the area.

In South Asian homes that reserved room is often called the baithak, the sitting room where guests are received. An Arabic majlis answers the same need. The word majlis means the place of sitting. Whichever word your family uses, the furniture asks the same of the room: firm seats along the walls, something to lean on, and an open floor in the middle.

Before: an ordinary living room with two fabric sofas and a TV unit.

From sofa suite to majlis

The room above is an ordinary starting point: two sofas facing a television. Changing it to a majlis follows a simple order.

  1. Decide which walls will carry seating. The seating is not freestanding and needs a wall behind each run.
  2. Choose the layout. A U-shape on three walls gives the classic guest room. An L-shape leaves one wall for a cabinet or a television.
  3. Measure those walls at floor level and note the door, window sill and radiator.
  4. Pick the fabric and the firmness.

You do not have to clear everything. The article on mixing a majlis with Western furniture shows how to keep a sofa or a display cabinet, and the comparison of a majlis and a sectional sofa helps if the family is undecided.

Designs to look at

Sofhu’s range runs from quiet to formal. The pieces below are single units, the building block of every layout. A full set repeats the unit along your walls. They are Arabic majlis units: raised to sofa height and fully upholstered, with a solid base, fixed backs and arm bolsters. Sofhu also makes the low Arabic floor sofa, a seat mattress with loose back cushions, which is closer to a traditional baithak.

Deep burgundy velvet is broken up by cream stripes and a gold-flecked centre panel running from back to base.

Grey chenille and a silver damask weave alternate across the seat, base and armrests of this compact piece.
  • Burgundy velvet with cream stripes is rich and formal and suits a room used for occasions.
  • Grey chenille with silver damask is calmer and sits well beside a pale carpet and white woodwork.
  • Mustard, emerald and teal velvets on a patterned base are for families who want the room to be noticed.

Sofhu’s existing page on velvet floor sofas explains that fabric, and the guide on how to choose majlis colours helps match a set to the carpet and curtains you already have. The Arabic sofa hub shows the styles side by side.

Comfort for long evenings

Guests in a baithak stay. Tea becomes dinner, and dinner becomes talk. The cushion has to hold up for hours and for years.

Sofhu fills its seats with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam and uses no springs. Density tells you how much material is in the cushion, not how hard it feels. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer than lighter foam. On a custom order you can ask for a softer or firmer seat and choose the cushion thickness, which is worth doing if grandparents will use the room.

Every cover has a zip and comes off for washing. After a house full of children at Eid, that is the feature people thank themselves for. The iftar and Eid seating plan has ideas for seating a crowd.

Questions

Before you order

Is an Arabic floor sofa the same as a baithak set?

They are close relatives. Both put a firm mattress on the floor with cushions to lean on, arranged along the walls. A Sofhu floor sofa has a seat mattress, back cushions that lean on the wall and armrests between sitters. The Arabic majlis is the raised, fully upholstered version of the same room. If your family prefers loose bolsters and a plainer look, say so, and choose the fabric to match.

Can I keep my existing sofa and add a majlis?

Yes. Many families keep one sofa for older relatives and run majlis seating along the remaining walls. Tell Sofhu the length of wall that is free and what colour your sofa is, so the new fabric can be chosen to sit with it instead of fighting it.

Does Sofhu have a shop on Dunstable Road?

No. Sofhu has no shop in Bury Park or anywhere in Luton. It manufactures in Türkiye and delivers each order to the customer's home. Designs are chosen from photos and on a video call, and the set is cut to the measurements you send.

Which colour works for a room used at Eid and for weddings?

A deep velvet such as burgundy, emerald or mustard photographs well and reads as a room for occasions. If the room is small, a lighter base cloth with a rich band of pattern gives the same sense of occasion without closing the walls in.

How do I look after the covers after a big family gathering?

Unzip the cover that has been marked and wash it. Sofhu states its covers can be machine washed at 30°C. Deal with spills soon, and do not tumble dry velvet. Because each piece has its own cover, you only wash the one that needs it.
