A terraced front room is usually longer than it is wide, with a chimney breast on one side and a window onto the street. That shape is the reason a majlis sofa in Leicester is better ordered to measure than bought ready-made. Sofhu is the manufacturer. It makes each set to your wall lengths in Türkiye and ships it free to your address. Two products are on offer: the Arabic majlis, raised to sofa height and fully upholstered with a solid base and fixed backs, and the low Arabic floor sofa of seat mattresses and loose back cushions.

Who sits on a majlis in Leicester

Leicester is one of the most diverse cities in Britain. It has a large Indian population of Gujarati heritage, both Hindu and Muslim, and a substantial Somali community in St Matthews and Highfields. Many Somali families reached the city by way of the Netherlands and Scandinavia, and low Arabic-style seating along the walls is a familiar way to furnish the main room in many of these homes.

That room works hard. It takes tea with neighbours on a weekday, cousins at Eid, and a full house when there is a wedding in the family. Low seating suits those days because nobody is given a chair of their own. People sit close, children fit between adults, and the middle of the floor stays open for the tray.

Sofhu’s style page on Somali Arabic seating looks at that way of furnishing a room, and the Arabic floor sofa hub shows the low cushion sets.

Fitting a majlis or floor sofa into a terraced room

Terraced housing is typical in Leicester, and its rooms follow a few familiar patterns. Neither product is freestanding. Every run needs a wall behind it, so the walls decide the layout.

RoomLayout to considerWhat to watch
Narrow front roomSingle row on the long wallKeep the path from the door clear
Front room with deep alcovesL-shape into the cornerMeasure each alcove separately
Through loungeU-shape at one endLeave the other end for the table or television
Small spare roomSingle rowDoor swing and radiator

Measure at floor level, where the seat will sit, because skirting boards take a little off every wall. Mark the radiator. Seating pushed against a radiator blocks the heat, so the run is often stopped short of it. The guide on how to measure a room for a majlis explains the steps, and the page on L-shape and U-shape majlis layouts compares the three arrangements.

Fabric, colour and the foam inside

A family room needs covers that can be taken off. Every Sofhu cover is zipped and removable, and Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C. That matters more than the shade you pick.

  • Patterned chenille or a woven kilim design hides everyday marks and suits a room that is used all day.
  • Velvet gives a deeper colour for a room kept mainly for guests.
  • Red, burgundy and cream are the warm, familiar choices. Taupe and grey sit more quietly beside a pale carpet.

The cushions are filled with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam and contain no springs. Density is the amount of material in the cushion, not how hard it feels, and denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer. You can ask for a softer or firmer feel. The article on foam density for floor seating explains the numbers.

Ordering a majlis sofa in Leicester

Sofhu has no premises in Leicester. Each set is made for one room and delivered to that address, which is the honest answer to any search for a majlis near you.

  1. Measure the walls and photograph them.
  2. Choose a layout, a fabric and a colour, with help on a video call if you want it.
  3. Receive a quote for your room.
  4. The set is made, vacuum packed and shipped free to your door.

Open the sealed bags by hand, not with a blade, and give the foam time to recover its shape. Shipping is free. Import duty or tax may apply depending on the destination, so ask Sofhu about your order before you confirm it.

For the wider picture, see the majlis in England page and Sofhu’s page on the Arabic sofa in the United Kingdom. Neighbouring city pages cover Birmingham and Bradford. When your measurements are ready, get a quote by measurement or send them on WhatsApp.

Questions

Before you order

Is there a majlis shop in Leicester where I can see a Sofhu set?

No. Sofhu manufactures in Türkiye and has no shop or agent in Leicester or anywhere in the East Midlands. You choose from photos, talk the design through on a video call, and the finished set is delivered to your home. Building to order is what lets a set match an awkward terraced room.

Can the seating go around a chimney breast?

Yes. A set is made in sections, so one run can sit in the alcove on each side and stop at the breast, or the seating can keep to the opposite wall. Measure each alcove on its own at floor level and send a photo of the whole wall with your figures.

We rent our house. Will the seating damage the flooring or walls?

Nothing is fixed to the wall or the floor. The set stands on the floor against the wall, and Sofhu describes its legless design as one that does not scratch floors. When you move, the sections lift out and go with you.

Can I order a matching rug and curtains with the seating?

Sofhu describes its complete sets as including a matching rug, curtains, an ottoman and pillows alongside the seating. Say in your quote request which of these you want. If you are keeping a fitted carpet, you may prefer the seating and ottoman only.

Is the seating firm and high enough for older relatives?

Sofhu describes its cushions as firm, and on custom orders you can ask for a softer or firmer foam and a thicker cushion. A raised majlis at sofa height is easier to rise from than a low floor sofa. Many families also keep one ordinary armchair in the room for a grandparent who prefers it.

What should I send to get a quote from Leicester?

Send the length of each wall you want seated, the positions of doors, windows, radiators and the chimney breast, and a photo of each wall. Add the colours you like and whether you want a single row, an L-shape or a U-shape. Sofhu replies with a quote for that room.
