Picture the front room on the day of a khatam, or on the third day after a death in the family. The settee has been pushed into the hall, white sheets cover the carpet, and the room holds several times its usual number. Many Bradford families have cleared a room this way. A majlis sofa in Bradford answers the same need permanently: seating round the walls, ready before anyone knocks.
Sofhu makes these sets to measure in Türkiye and ships them free to Bradford. It makes two kinds. An Arabic floor sofa is a low set of loose cushions at floor level, close to the way the room is already used, and it is what most of the photos here show. An Arabic majlis, like the beige set at the top of this page, is raised to settee height on an upholstered base with a fixed back.
Floor seating is already Bradford’s habit
Bradford has one of the highest proportions of Pakistani-heritage residents in England, with many families tracing their roots to Mirpur and living in Manningham, Bradford Moor and Toller. Sitting on the floor for family gatherings and religious occasions is ordinary here. What is new is buying the seating as a fitted set instead of laying out sheets and cushions each time.
The Arabic guest room, the majlis, and the South Asian baithak are close relatives. Both put people along the walls and leave the centre open for food. The difference is in the build of the seating.
| Arabic floor sofa | Baithak or toshak style | |
|---|---|---|
| Seat | Thick seat mattress at floor level | Long, thinner mattress on the floor |
| Back | Shaped back cushions against the wall | Loose bolsters against the wall |
| Armrests | Yes, dividing the places | Usually none |
| Look | Tailored, patterned | Softer, easy to rearrange |
Sofhu builds both, and the raised majlis besides. Its Afghan toshak line is the closest match to the mattress-and-bolster manner, and the page on the Afghan toshak tradition explains the parts. The post comparing an Afghan toshak with an Arabic majlis helps if the family is divided on which to choose.

Fitting a set into a stone terrace
Bradford’s stone terraced houses often have a dedicated front room. Where that room has a window to the street, a fireplace on one side and a door in the corner, an L-shape on the window wall and the wall facing the fireplace is the layout that disturbs least.

A U-shape seats more, and suits a room given over entirely to guests. Whichever you choose, measure each wall at floor level, because a floor sofa leans on the wall and must match it. Note the fireplace and the radiator under the window.
Stone houses are cold at floor level in a West Yorkshire winter. Ask for a thicker seat, choose velvet or chenille over linen, and put a rug in the centre. The Arabic floor sofa hub shows sets on both low and deeper bases.
A room for elders, children and prayer
Three generations use a Bradford front room, and each wants something different from it.
Grandparents want height. A raised run on one wall makes sitting and standing easier; see the notes on hosting elderly guests in a majlis.
Children want to climb on everything. The seats have no springs, and the covers unzip. Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C.

And many households want a calm end of the room for prayer and recitation. A single row along one wall, like the one above, does that without closing off the room; choose a plain or lightly patterned fabric if you want it quieter. The guide to a prayer room seating corner has layouts.
What is inside
Sofhu fills its seats with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam. Density is the weight of the foam per cubic metre, and it is the figure worth asking any seller for, because denser foam generally holds its shape longer. It does not fix how hard the seat feels. You can ask for softer or firmer.
