How do you seat forty relatives at Eid without the room looking empty the rest of the year? In Sohar that is a practical question. The family villas and farm houses of the Batinah coast often have large guest rooms, and a majlis sofa in Sohar is usually ordered by the wall, not by the piece. Sofhu makes each set to your measurements in Türkiye and ships it free.
For a formal guest room the usual choice is the Arabic majlis shown in the photographs here: raised, fully upholstered units at sofa height with a solid base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters. Sofhu also makes the Arabic floor sofa, a low cushion set at floor level with loose back cushions, which suits a family room or the more relaxed end of the house.
Planning a majlis sofa for a large room in Sohar
A large majlis is furnished around its perimeter. Seating runs along the walls, and the centre is kept for serving, for tables and for the rug.
- Three walls. A U-shape with the door in the fourth wall is the usual plan.
- Four walls. The run continues on both sides of the door.
- A long hall. Seating down both long walls and across the end.
The L-shape and U-shape majlis page compares these, and the majlis sofa set hub shows complete sets.

Sofhu’s seating is modular. A long wall is covered by several sections placed end to end, each with its backrest, so the length is whatever your wall measures. Armrests divide the run into places. How many you need is a matter of comfort and custom, and how many backrests and armrests you need helps you decide. To size the room for a crowd, start from how many people a majlis seats.
Every run should have a wall behind it, and a floor sofa in particular is not freestanding. In a big room that is rarely a limit, but mark any wall of glass on your sketch.
The centre of the room
With seating on the walls, the middle carries the hospitality. Some households keep it open, with only a rug, so coffee can be poured along the row. Others place low tables down the centre for dates, fruit and incense.

Sofhu supplies rugs, ottomans, floor cushions and curtains as parts of a set. For the busiest days of the year, the iftar and Eid seating plan shows how to add places with floor cushions without crowding the room.
Fabric for the Batinah coast
Sohar is on a hot, humid coast. A guest majlis here is air-conditioned for occasions and may stand closed between them, which is when damp does its work.
Breathable fabric helps. Sofhu describes its linen as absorbent and porous, and the existing linen floor sofa page shows it. Flat woven covers are another option, and Sofhu describes its woven series as non-wrinkling. Velvet gives the formal look many families want for a reception room, and it is a reasonable choice if the room is cooled and aired regularly.
Whatever the fabric, the covers are zippered and removable, and Sofhu states they can be washed at 30°C. Air the room weekly, even when it is not in use.
The seats themselves are 32 kg/m³ polyurethane foam with no springs. Density is how much material is in the cushion. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer, which matters on the favoured places near the head of the room that are always sat on first.
Seating for the farm
Al Batinah is farming country, and for a family with a farm it is a natural place to sit out in the evening. Sofhu’s outdoor line suits that life: wooden benches with cushions, and a foldable mat that travels in the car. The fabric is described by Sofhu as water-resistant and able to handle light rain and moisture.

Benches stand on their own frames, so they can be grouped under a shelter or a tree with no wall behind. Store the cushions indoors in the most humid months. See the outdoor majlis hub and the existing outdoor sets page.
Delivery to Sohar
Sohar is an ancient port that has become an industrial centre, with a modern port and free zone, and it sits on the coastal road between Muscat and the UAE border. None of that means Sofhu keeps goods there. It has no shop or stock in Oman. Each set is made to order, vacuum packed and shipped free, and the route it takes to your address is confirmed by Sofhu when you order.
Duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination. Ask first, and read ordering a majlis in the GCC. The existing page on the Arabic sofa in Oman covers the country, and the Omani sablah and majlis page gives the cultural background.
