From roughly June to September, while the rest of Arabia is at its hottest, Salalah turns green. The khareef brings mist and drizzle to Dhofar, and with it visitors from across the Gulf. It is the season the city is known for, and it is hard on soft furniture. Any advice about a majlis sofa in Salalah has to start there. Sofhu makes sets to order in Türkiye, cut to your walls, with covers that unzip, and ships them free.

What the khareef does to a majlis sofa in Salalah

Persistent damp is the difference between Salalah and every other city in Oman. For weeks the air is wet, washing dries slowly, and fabric that touches a cool floor or an outside wall stays moist. Upholstery left alone in those conditions smells musty and can grow mould.

No fabric or foam removes that risk, and Sofhu publishes no anti-mould treatment. What a well-made set can offer is the ability to be taken apart, cleaned and dried. Every Sofhu cover has a zip and comes off, and Sofhu states the covers can be machine washed at 30°C.

A care routine for the damp months

  • Keep air moving. Run the air conditioning or a dehumidifier in the majlis during the khareef, even on days when nobody sits there.
  • Once a week, stand the seat cushions on edge for a few hours so the underside dries.
  • Leave a small gap between the backrests and any wall that feels damp to the hand. They still need the wall for support when in use.
  • Wash covers when they need it, and put them back only when fully dry.
  • Lift the rug and let the floor beneath it dry out from time to time.

Sofhu’s own Arabic sofa care guide gives general cleaning advice, and our article on how long a majlis lasts explains what shortens the life of foam and fabric.

Fabric that dries

Thick pile holds water longer than a flat weave. For Salalah that makes the order of preference fairly clear.

FabricIn the khareefSuits
Flat wovenDries quickest, hides marksFamily rooms, rental houses
LinenAbsorbent and breathable; wash and dry oftenRooms with good air conditioning
Velvet or chenilleSlower to dryFormal majlis kept dry all season

The comparison of velvet, linen and jacquard has more detail. Colour is a free choice. Green suits a city that prides itself on its green hills, and emerald green and burgundy majlis ideas shows finished rooms.

The seats are filled with 32 kg/m³ polyurethane foam and have no springs, so there is no metal inside the cushion to rust. Density is the amount of material in the foam, and denser foam generally keeps its shape longer.

Holiday villas and rental houses

Many houses in Salalah fill up for the season: family holiday villas and homes let to visitors. They need seating that takes heavy use for three months and then stands empty.

Plan for both halves of the year. Choose a layout that seats a large family, usually a U-shape in the main room, as shown on the Arabic jalsa page. Sofhu makes two products for it. The Arabic majlis is raised, sofa-height seating built as upholstered units with fixed backs and arm bolsters, like the teal U below. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set whose loose pieces are quick to lift, air and stand on edge, which counts in the khareef. Choose covers that a housekeeper can remove and wash between stays. Before closing the house, wash and dry everything and store the cushions on edge, off the floor. The custom majlis hub lists what can be specified for a project like this.

Covered terraces and gardens

Sitting outside in the mist is part of the pleasure of the khareef. Sofhu’s outdoor line, on handmade wooden frames in fabric it describes as water-resistant, is made for terraces and gardens. Keep it under a roof and bring the cushions in at night during the wet months. The outdoor majlis hub and the existing outdoor sets page show the options.

Questions

Before you order

Is Sofhu's foam treated against mould?

Sofhu does not publish any anti-mould treatment or test for its foam, so none should be assumed. Protection comes from how the set is used: keep the room ventilated or dehumidified during the khareef, lift the cushions off the floor to air them, and never put a cover back on while it is still damp.

We rent our villa to visitors in the khareef. Which fabric lasts?

For a rental, choose a tight flat-woven fabric in a mid or dark tone with a pattern, since it hides marks between washes and dries faster than deep pile. Sofhu describes its woven fabrics as non-wrinkling. Removable covers let you wash between guests, and the 32 kg/m³ foam, which Sofhu describes as firm, suits seats that many different people use.

Can cushions stay on a terrace during the drizzle?

Sofhu describes its outdoor fabric as water-resistant and able to handle light rain and moisture. It does not say cushions can be left out through weeks of damp. Use the outdoor line under a roof, bring the cushions indoors overnight during the khareef, and let them dry fully before stacking them.

Should I order before the season or after it?

Sofhu publishes no production or delivery time, so the only safe advice is to ask early. If the set must be in place before visitors arrive for the khareef, say so in your first message and get the timing confirmed in writing before you approve the design.

How does a delivery get to Salalah?

Sofhu ships worldwide with free shipping. Ask it to confirm the route to your address. Salalah is a long way from Muscat, so do not assume the same arrangements apply. Give your full address in Dhofar when you enquire. Duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination, so ask about those as well.

Do darker colours hide damp marks better?

Darker and patterned fabrics hide water marks and everyday stains better than plain cream or white. They do not prevent damp. Whatever the colour, the routine is the same: wash the covers at 30°C when needed, dry them completely, and air the foam while the covers are off.
