Most mosque furniture decisions are made by a committee of volunteers with a fixed budget, a building in daily use and nobody whose job is upholstery. This guide is written for that table. It covers which rooms gain from floor seating, how to plan capacity from a floor plan, what fabric survives public use, how to keep it clean with a volunteer rota, and how to buy in stages. The prayer hall itself is outside its scope: that floor stays open. The subject here is every other room where the community sits, talks, studies and eats.
Rooms that benefit
Floor seating earns its place in rooms where people gather for conversation or study and where the floor must be cleared quickly.
- The guest room. Where visiting speakers, delegations and families are received. This is the room that most resembles a house majlis, and mosque guest room seating should be the most carefully finished in the building.
- The imam’s office or counselling room. A small L of seating beside the desk puts a worried visitor at ease in a way two office chairs do not.
- The library and reading room. A row of low seats under the shelves for study circles.
- Classrooms for the weekend school. Madrasa floor seating along the walls lets children sit for recitation and leaves the middle free for low desks or a circle.
- The community hall. Perimeter seating for elders during iftar, condolence gatherings and committee meetings, with the centre left for floor cloths or tables.
- The women’s and family lounge. A place to sit with small children near the prayer space.
One sentence from Sofhu’s own product notes matters for all of them: its floor sofas are not freestanding and need a wall or something solid behind them. So plan seating around the edges of rooms, and use movable floor cushions for the middle.
A note on names. Sofhu makes two products. This guide is mostly about the Arabic floor sofa: a low seat mattress with loose back cushions and armrest blocks, easy to move and to wash. The Arabic majlis is the raised one, fully upholstered at sofa height with fixed backs, and it is worth considering for a formal guest room or for the section set aside for elders.

Capacity planning
Count wall, then people.
- Draw each room with every door, fire exit, radiator, cupboard and socket marked.
- Strike out the lengths you cannot seat: door openings, the path to each exit, anything that must stay reachable.
- Measure what remains. That is the seating run for the room.
- Decide the kind of sitting. A condolence visit of twenty minutes seats more people on the same run than a three-hour iftar. Plan for the long gathering.
- Add flexible places. Floor cushions and stacking chairs cover the busy nights without filling the room on quiet ones.
Sofhu does not publish a seats-per-set figure, because every set is cut to its room. The general method for estimating places is set out in how many people a majlis seats, and worked layouts for Ramadan are in the iftar and Eid seating plan.
Two cautions belong in the minutes of the meeting. First, the legal occupancy of a public room is set by your local authority, not by how many cushions fit. Second, plan for those who cannot sit low. A raised section near the door, or a row of chairs, should be part of the first drawing; see hosting elderly guests in a majlis.

Hard-wearing fabric and spare covers
Durable floor seating is decided by three things: the foam, the fabric and whether the covers come off.
Foam. Sofhu fills its seating with 32 kg/m³ (32 DNS) high-density polyurethane foam, with no springs. Density is the measure of how much material is in the cushion. The Polyurethane Foam Association notes that higher-density foam generally retains its original properties better, which is what a seat used by hundreds of people a week needs. Density is not the same as hardness, and on custom orders a softer or firmer feel can be requested. For a public room, firm is the usual choice.
Fabric. Choose with a caretaker’s eye.
| Property | What to ask for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Weave | Tight woven or jacquard | Resists pulls from bags, buckles and children |
| Pattern | Kilim, medallion or stripe | Hides marks between washes |
| Colour | Mid-tone or dark | Pale plain cloth shows every shoe and cup |
| Pile | Short or none | Long pile holds dust and crumbs |
Sofhu’s notes on its fabric series describe the woven types as non-wrinkling and chenille as very low shedding. No abrasion ratings are published, so say plainly that the room is public and let the workshop recommend.
Covers. Sofhu states that its covers are zippered, removable and machine washable at 30 degrees. For an institution, the obvious next question is a second set of covers, so one can be on the seats while the other is in the wash. Sofhu has not published a spare-cover service. Ask for it to be quoted with the original order, while the fabric is on the cutting table.
Cleaning routine for volunteers
A routine that fits on one laminated sheet gets followed.
After each event
- Collect cups and plates, shake out loose cushions, straighten the backrests.
- Blot any spill at once with a dry cloth. Do not rub it in.
Weekly
- Vacuum seats, backs and the gap along the wall with a soft brush head.
- Check zips are closed and tucked out of sight.
- Swap the cushions between the busiest seats and the quietest, so wear spreads evenly.
Each term, and after Ramadan
- Remove the covers one wall at a time, wash at 30 degrees, air dry and refit. Wash a whole run together so the colour stays even.
- Look over seams and zips and note anything that needs attention.
Give each room a named volunteer and keep a labelled bag of spare zip pulls and the fabric details in the office. Stain methods for tea, coffee and food are in the guide to removing stains from a majlis.
Buying in phases
Few committees can furnish a whole building in one financial year, and there is no need to.
Phase one: the guest room. It is small, it is seen by every visitor, and it shows the congregation what the rest could look like.
Phase two: classrooms and library. Simple single rows and L shapes, in the hardest-wearing fabric.
Phase three: the hall. The largest run, ordered once the committee knows from experience which fabric and firmness have worked.
To keep the phases consistent, keep a file: the measurements sent, the fabric name and colour, the foam feel chosen, and photographs of the finished room. Before each new phase, ask whether the same fabric is available. Cloth changes between production runs, and a close match agreed in advance is better than a surprise.
Community centre seating and Islamic centre furniture orders are handled the same way as a home order, by measurement, with the wholesale route available for larger projects. Sofhu’s wholesale majlis page and its existing wholesale enquiry form are the place to start, and temporary set-ups for fundraisers and Ramadan tents are covered under majlis seating for events.

Ordering mosque furniture: what to send for a quote
Sofhu is the manufacturer. Each set is made in Türkiye to the measurements supplied and shipped free worldwide. A committee’s request should include:
- a plan of each room with wall lengths, doors and exits
- what the room is used for and roughly how often
- preferred colours, and the instruction that covers must be removable
- whether a raised section is wanted for elders
- any local fire-safety or insurance requirement the furniture must meet
- the phases you expect, so the first order can be planned with the later ones in mind
Prices are by quote. Duties or taxes may apply on import depending on the destination, so check with your customs authority and raise it with Sofhu before ordering. Read how a custom majlis is specified and the steps for ordering from abroad, then get a quote by measurement or open the conversation on WhatsApp.
