The older houses of Greater Cleveland were built with a room for receiving people. In a colonial or a double it is the front room, set apart from the kitchen and the family’s daily mess. A majlis sofa turns that room back to its purpose. Sofhu makes the seating to measure in Türkiye and ships it free to Cleveland.
The sets on this page are all Arabic majlis: raised, sofa-height units with an upholstered base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters, described on the Arabic majlis page. Sofhu also makes the Arabic floor sofa, a low seat mattress with loose back cushions, an ottoman and floor pillows, for a more casual room.
A Levantine community with a long history
Greater Cleveland’s Arab American community is long established and largely Lebanese, Palestinian and Syrian. Its Middle Eastern groceries, bakeries and restaurants are concentrated on the West Side, around Lorain Avenue and West 117th Street, and families live out into suburbs such as Parma and North Olmsted.
In the Levant the word is more often jalsa arabiya than majlis, and the guest room has its own names: the madafa of the village, the reception hall of the old Damascus house with its raised sitting area lined with a low sofa and cushions. The everyday Levantine set is simple and low. It has a seat mattress (farsha), a backrest (masnad) and an armrest between sitters, which is what Sofhu sells as a floor sofa. The formal room takes the raised majlis. Sofhu’s pages on Syrian and Levantine Arabic seating and the Jordanian and Palestinian madafa describe those traditions, and the Arabic jalsa hub shows the sets.
Fitting a set into a front room
A separate front room is the easiest room to furnish as a majlis, because nothing else has to live there.
- U-shape when the room has one doorway and three usable walls.
- L-shape when a fireplace, a bay window or an archway to the dining room takes up one side.
- Single row facing an existing sofa, if the room must do both jobs.

The burgundy velvet L-shaped majlis above shows how two walls of seating define a room without filling it. The backs stand against the wall, so measure solid wall only and stop each run short of radiators and door swings. A guest room has its customs too, and majlis etiquette for guests is a short read on that.
Warm, dense seating for lake-effect winters
Cleveland winters come off the lake, and the front room is used most in the cold half of the year. That favours a fabric with pile and a seat with substance.
Velvet is the classic choice. Sofhu describes its velvet as durable and easy to clean, and its velvet sofa page shows the range. Chenille is a softer alternative with very low shedding. Deep reds and greens suit a winter room, and emerald green and burgundy majlis ideas has examples.
The seat is filled with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam and contains no springs. Density is a measure of material, not hardness: more foam per cubic metre generally means a cushion that holds up longer. You can also ask for a firmer or softer feel.
A lighter look for a smaller room
Not every Cleveland front room wants dark velvet. A small room with one window can feel closed in by it.

The beige majlis above uses a pale woven fabric with a medallion on the seat and dark stripes on the backs and edges. It reads as calm and bright in daylight and sits well with painted trim and wood floors. The same construction applies: zippered covers that come off, with a 30°C machine wash by Sofhu’s instructions.
| Room | Suggested fabric | Suggested colour |
|---|---|---|
| Large front room, used mostly in winter | Velvet or chenille | Burgundy, emerald, navy |
| Small or north-facing room | Linen or a pale weave | Beige, cream, light grey |
