Every Sofhu set is made in Türkiye, and in Dayton that matters more than in most American cities. Dayton has one of the largest Ahiska Turkish communities in the country, centred on Old North Dayton, where families have bought and renovated houses and built a mosque and a community centre. For a household that grew up with a sedir under the window or a şark köşesi in the corner, a majlis sofa in Dayton is not an exotic purchase. It is familiar furniture from a workshop in a familiar country, sized for an Ohio front room and shipped free.
Sedir, şark köşesi and majlis: the same idea in three forms
The words differ, but all three describe firm seating that follows the wall and leaves the floor open. Knowing which one you want makes the order faster.
| Name | What it is | What to ask Sofhu for |
|---|---|---|
| Sedir | Raised seat built along the window wall, often on three sides | An Arabic majlis or a wooden bench set |
| Şark köşesi | Corner set of firm cushions in kilim-pattern fabric | An L-shape floor sofa in kilim fabric |
| Arabic majlis | Raised, upholstered seating round the room with fixed backs and arm bolsters | A U-shape, L-shape or single-row majlis |
Sofhu makes both products behind these names. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set at floor level: a seat mattress, loose back cushions and armrest blocks, like the taupe kilim set at the top of this page. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height and built as upholstered units.
In the old Turkish house the sedir was part of the building, and the corner farthest from the door was the place of honour. A set from Sofhu is movable furniture, but you can keep that logic: put the corner piece where the oldest guest will sit. The page on Turkish sedir and şark köşesi goes further into the tradition, and Sofhu’s own Turkish majlis page shows the carved-frame line.

Sizing a set for an older Dayton house
Older frame houses with modest front rooms are typical of the neighbourhoods where this community lives, and they reward careful measuring. These rooms usually have a window on the street side, a doorway to the next room and sometimes a radiator or floor register along one wall. A set ordered from a size chart will leave a gap or cover the heat.
A made-to-measure set solves that. Measure each wall at floor level, mark the radiator and the door swing, and note where the window sill sits if you want the backrests below it. In a small front room an L-shape in the corner away from the door seats the family and keeps the walkway clear. The guide to L-shape and U-shape layouts compares the two.

If the room has to hold a television stand or a dining table as well, the article on mixing a majlis with Western furniture has workable plans.
Floor level or raised: choosing for your family
Choose by who sits there most. A floor sofa suits children, long tea evenings and guests who are used to sitting cross-legged. A majlis or a wooden bench set, both at sofa height, is kinder to knees and makes it easier for grandparents to stand up. Many families combine them: a floor sofa in the family room and a majlis where the elders sit.
Sofhu’s wooden bench sets are handmade, and its Turkish majlis line uses a solid beech frame with hand-carved details. The floor sofas have no frame at all. The light grey and black set below is an upholstered majlis in an L shape. The comparison of floor seating and a raised diwan sets out the trade-offs, and Sofhu’s page on its wooden bench sets shows the frames.

What is inside the cushions
The cushions are filled with 32 DNS polyurethane foam, which means the foam weighs 32 kg per cubic metre. Density is the amount of material in the cushion, not how hard it feels, and denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer. There are no springs. On a custom order you can ask for a softer or a firmer feel, and for a different cushion thickness.
Covers on the floor sofas are zippered, so a kilim-pattern cover that has seen a winter of muddy boots and spilled tea can come off and go in the machine at 30°C.
Ordering from Dayton
Sofhu has no store or stock in Dayton or anywhere else in Ohio. The order is placed by message and the set is delivered to your door, vacuum-packed in sealed bags. Shipping is free. Duty or tax on imported goods may apply, so ask Sofhu how it is handled before you confirm.
Send wall lengths, two or three photos of the room and a picture of a pattern you like through the quote by measurement page or on WhatsApp. The state page for Arabic majlis seating in Ohio covers the wider picture, and there are city guides for Columbus and Toledo.
