Upstairs or downstairs? For most Cincinnati families planning a majlis sofa, that is the first decision, and downstairs usually wins. A finished basement has what the living room lacks: unbroken walls, few windows and room to seat people on three sides. It makes two products, and they are not the same thing. The Arabic majlis is raised, sofa-height seating in upholstered units with fixed backs and arm bolsters, like the burgundy and cream seat at the top of this page. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set at floor level with loose back cushions, an ottoman and floor pillows.
A suburban, mixed community
Greater Cincinnati’s Muslim and Arab community is spread through the suburbs and comes from many backgrounds. Single-family homes with finished basements are common.

The finished basement as a majlis
A basement gives you the wall length for a U-shape, which is the layout that makes a room feel like a majlis and not a corner of one.
The rose-burgundy majlis above is a U-shape in upholstered units, with cream stripes and loose cushions along the backs. A rug inside the U covers the basement floor and gives the room its centre.
The grey and gold kilim set here is the other product, a floor sofa, shown as an L with its rug, ottoman and floor cushions. In a basement that combination matters. The ottoman serves as a table, and the floor cushions take the overflow when the house is full.
Before you measure, look for the things basements hide:
- Support posts and bulkheads that interrupt a wall.
- The door to the utility room, which must stay clear.
- Egress windows and sump covers.

Majlis or floor sofa
Not everyone in the family will want to sit near the floor, and stairs to a basement already ask something of older knees.

Foam and covers
Whatever the height, the seat is the same material: 32 kg/m³ high-density foam, without springs. A cubic metre of it weighs about 32 kg. Denser foam generally keeps its shape and bounce better than low-density foam, so the seat holds up better under daily use. Softer and harder versions can be requested.
Covers are zippered and removable. Sofhu’s care guidance is a machine wash at 30°C.
How delivery and ordering work
