Beige flame-kilim L-shaped Arabic majlis in the corner of a grey living room with wood flooring
The short answer

A majlis sofa for a Leeds home is best made to measure, because back-to-back and through-terrace rooms are small and ready-made sets rarely fit. Sofhu cuts each set to your wall lengths in Türkiye, fills it with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam, and ships it free. Most small terrace rooms take a single row or an L-shape.

Take a tape measure to a back-to-back in Harehills and the case for made-to-measure makes itself. The living room is small, the door is in the wrong place, and the one long wall has a radiator on it. A majlis sofa in Leeds has to be cut for the room it is going into. Sofhu does that in Türkiye, from the wall lengths you send, and ships the set free. It makes two products: the Arabic majlis, a raised, fully upholstered set at sofa height with fixed backs, and the Arabic floor sofa, a low set of seat mattresses and loose cushions.

Small rooms, exact sizes

Leeds has Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Arab and Kurdish communities concentrated in Harehills, Beeston and Hyde Park. Much of the housing in those areas is back-to-back and through terraces. The rooms are compact.

Ready-made floor sofa sets come in fixed lengths. In a large room that hardly matters. In a small one, a seat that is too long covers the door, and one that is too short leaves a gap that collects shoes and toys. The post comparing a ready-made floor sofa with a custom majlis sets out the difference.

A custom set has no fixed lengths. Sofhu does not publish standard sizes because each run is cut to the wall. If you want typical figures for planning, the guide to standard majlis dimensions gives general ranges; your own quote will follow your own room.

Measuring a Leeds terrace for Arabic floor seating

A majlis and a floor sofa both run along the wall, so the measurement that matters is the wall at floor level.

  1. Measure every wall from corner to corner, just above the skirting board.
  2. Mark the door and how far it swings into the room.
  3. Mark the radiator, the gas fire or fireplace, and any boxed-in pipes.
  4. Note the window sill height on any wall where seating will go.
  5. Photograph each wall straight on.

The full method is in how to measure a room for a majlis.

Which layout fits

In most compact rooms the choice is between two layouts.

A single row takes one wall. It suits the narrowest rooms and leaves space for a television opposite. The red sadu floor sofa below is a single row.

An L-shape takes two walls and uses the corner, which is otherwise dead space. The beige kilim-pattern majlis at the top of this page is an L-shape in the corner of a room of modest size.

A U-shape needs three free walls. In a through terrace with a separate front room it can work; in a back-to-back, usually not. The custom majlis hub shows what else can be adjusted, including seat thickness and armrest positions.

Choosing fabric from a distance

There is no Sofhu shop in Leeds, so fabric is chosen from photos, video and conversation.

What goes into a seat: cover fabric, high-density foam blocks, wadding, thread and the tools to cut them.

Start with the type of cloth. Velvet and chenille are warm and suit a Yorkshire winter. Patterned kilim weaves hide marks. Linen is cool and better in a bright room. Sofhu’s fabrics page lists each series. Then narrow down the colour against your own carpet and walls: send a photo of the room in daylight and ask for swatches photographed beside a similar tone.

Deep reds, like the burgundy kilim floor sofa above, warm up a north-facing room. Greys and taupes sit quietly with a grey carpet.

What is inside the seats

The filling is 32 kg/m³ high-density foam, with no springs. Density measures how much material is in the foam. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer, though it does not decide how hard the seat feels, and you can ask for softer or firmer. The covers are zippered, and Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C.

The finished set is vacuum packed and shipped free to your door. Open the bags by hand and let the foam recover. Import VAT or duty may apply to goods entering Great Britain depending on the shipment; ask Sofhu before you confirm.

The England page covers customs and delivery, and the Arabic sofa in the United Kingdom page covers the UK. Neighbouring guides exist for Bradford, Sheffield and Manchester.

Questions

Before you order

My living room door opens straight onto the street. Where should the seating go?

Keep it away from the door wall. Cold air and wet shoes arrive there, and the door swing needs space. Put the main run on the wall opposite or beside the window, and leave the area inside the door for a mat and shoe rack.

How exact do my measurements need to be?

To the centimetre, taken at floor level. In a small room a few centimetres decide whether a run sits flush or blocks a door. Measure each wall twice, note skirting boards and pipes, and send photos. Ask Sofhu to check the figures with you before anything is cut.

Can I see and feel the fabric before ordering from Leeds?

Sofhu has no shop in Leeds, and whether physical samples can be posted is not published, so ask. What Sofhu does offer is a video call with a designer; ask for close-up photos of the fabric as well, to judge colour and weave.

I am a student in a shared house for one year. What should I order?

The smallest useful set is a single-row floor sofa: one seat run with back cushions for your room, plus a couple of floor cushions. It gives friends somewhere to sit, needs no fixing to the wall, and leaves with you in June. Say that you will be moving, and ask for short pieces.

Will a majlis make a small room feel smaller?

Usually the opposite. A set that follows the walls frees the middle of the floor, and a low floor sofa also keeps the upper half of the room open. Choose a light or mid-tone fabric and keep the rug close in colour to the seating.

Is duty charged on delivery to Leeds?

Shipping is free. Import VAT or duty may apply to goods entering Great Britain, depending on the shipment. Sofhu has not published a fixed rule, so ask how your order will be handled before you confirm it.
