In Toronto the same furniture is asked for under several names. Afghan families around Thorncliffe Park call it a toshak. Iranian families along Yonge Street in North York know the poshti. Arab families in Scarborough say jalsa or majlis, and Somali families around Dixon Road in Etobicoke order Arabic seating too. All of them are describing seating along the wall for family and guests, some of it low on the floor and some raised to sofa height, and all of them arrive at the same search: majlis sofa Toronto. Sofhu makes both kinds to measure in Türkiye and ships them free to the city.
On this site the names are kept apart. The Arabic majlis is the raised product: sofa-height upholstered units with a solid base, fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is the low one, a seat mattress with loose back cushions, and the toshak belongs to that family. Sofhu makes both.
One manufacturer, several traditions
The Greater Toronto Area has some of Canada’s largest Arab, Afghan, Iranian, Somali and South Asian communities. Their seating traditions are related but not identical, and it helps to order by the right name.
- Arab families from Iraq, the Levant, the Gulf and Yemen mostly want the structured set of firm seat, backrest and armrest bolsters, as a raised majlis or as a low floor sofa. The Middle Eastern strip on Lawrence Avenue East has its own guide, Arabic majlis in Scarborough.
- Afghan families, with shops clustered around Thorncliffe Park, sit on the toshak. See the next section and the style page on Afghan toshak floor seating.
- Iranian families along the stretch of Yonge Street nicknamed Tehranto know the poshti, a carpet-faced backrest on a Persian rug. Persian poshti seating explains how a Sofhu set relates to it.
- Somali families, many of them around Dixon Road, can read Somali Arabic seating.
Afghan toshak in Toronto
A toshak is a floor mattress for sitting, eating and sleeping, with loose pillows behind the back. It is thinner and less structured than a Gulf-style set.

The cream floor sofa above, with burgundy cross-stitch bands, is shown as an L with a matching rug and ottoman. Sofhu makes toshak covers with zippers so they can be machine washed in cold water, turned inside out. Its existing page on the premium Afghan toshak has more on the product.
If you want the look of a toshak with more support, ask for a firmer foam and separate back cushions. That suits a household where some guests prefer a toshak and others an Arabic sofa.
Condo or basement: two different briefs
Toronto homes split into two kinds, and the right set for one is wrong for the other.
High-rise condos. Space is tight and one wall is usually glass. A single row along the solid wall is the realistic plan, sometimes with a short return to make an L.

The grey velvet majlis unit above, with gold stripes on a black patterned base, takes up one wall and no more. The guide to a majlis for small apartments shows how to make a single row feel complete.
Houses and townhouses. In the suburbs the majlis often goes in a finished basement, where a U-shape fits. The grey majlis at the top of this page is a U with a quilted base and diamond cushions along three walls.

The same layout looks more formal in black and cream with striped bolsters.
| Condo | House basement | |
|---|---|---|
| Usual layout | Single row or short L | L or U shape |
| Measure around | Balcony door, window wall | Posts, stairs, furnace door |
| Extras worth adding | Ottoman, floor cushions | Rug, ottoman, floor cushions |
Is there an Arabic furniture store in Toronto for this?
Not one that belongs to Sofhu. It is a manufacturer selling direct, without a shop, dealer or stock in the city. The trade is simple: you give up sitting on a sample, and you get seating made to the length of your own walls.
Every set uses 32 kg/m³ high-density foam with no springs and zippered covers. Design choices are made from photos and, if you want, a video call with the designers.
