On Lawrence Avenue East, between Victoria Park and Birchmount, you can eat Lebanese, Syrian, Iraqi and Palestinian food within a few blocks. The Wexford stretch is one of Toronto’s best-known Middle Eastern strips, with restaurants, butchers, bakeries and shops side by side. What it does not have is a place that will build an Arabic majlis for your Scarborough home to the exact length of your walls. That part is done at a distance. Sofhu makes each set to order in Türkiye and delivers it to the address, with free shipping.
Sofhu makes two products. The Arabic majlis, shown on this page, is raised, sofa-height seating in upholstered units with fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set at floor level with loose back cushions, an ottoman and floor pillows, and it is the easier one to carry down basement stairs.
Three kinds of Scarborough home, three kinds of set
Scarborough was largely built after the war, and its housing falls into three types: bungalows, split-levels and apartment towers. Each asks for a different majlis.
| Home | Where the majlis goes | Layout |
|---|---|---|
| Bungalow | Finished basement | U shape or long L |
| Split-level | Lower family room | L shape |
| Apartment tower | Living room wall | Single row or short L |
In a bungalow the basement runs the full footprint of the house, so the walls are long. The light grey and black set at the top of this page lines three of them, with the rug left open in the middle.
A split-level’s lower room is smaller and usually has stairs on one side. An L in the far corner works best.

The grey velvet L above, on a quilted base, shows the corner piece that joins the two runs.
In a tower, one wall is often all you get. A single seat with armrests at both ends still reads as a majlis.

This burgundy and cream striped single is placed under a window, which the height of its back allows. See majlis for small apartments for more single-wall plans.
Measuring a basement for Arabic seating in Scarborough
A finished basement is the usual place for a majlis room here, and basements are where measuring goes wrong. Work in this order.
- Decide which walls are free. Rule out the wall with the stairs, the laundry door and the electrical panel.
- Measure each free wall at floor level, baseboard to baseboard. Walls are rarely the same length at the floor as at eye height.
- Mark posts, bulkheads that come down low, floor drains and heating vents.
- Photograph each wall straight on, and the room from the doorway.
- Note how you enter. The open side of a U should face the door.
This seating is not freestanding. Each run must have a wall or other hard surface behind it. The full method is in how to measure a room for a majlis, and basement majlis ideas has layouts for awkward rooms.
Looking for an Arabic furniture store in Scarborough
If you searched for a store, you probably wanted to see the fabric and sit on the seat. Sofhu cannot offer that locally. It has no shop, agent or stock in Scarborough or anywhere in Canada.
What it offers in its place is a look at many finished rooms in photos, a video call with its designers, and a set that fits your walls. For how that compares with shopping in person, read Arabic furniture store online.
Fabric and colour for these rooms
Basements have less daylight, so colour matters more than usual. Light greys, creams and taupes keep a low room bright, and a darker base hides scuffs where feet meet the seat.

The taupe velvet L above pairs gold crossed straps with a patterned charcoal base. There are more palettes in beige, cream and grey majlis ideas.
Under the fabric is 32 kg/m³ high-density foam with no springs. All covers are zippered, and Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C, which matters in a room where children eat.
Families from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Palestine each have their own word for this room. The page on Levantine Arabic seating explains the shared tradition.
Delivery to Scarborough
The set arrives vacuum packed, in separate pieces. Open the packs by hand, without a blade, and give the foam time to regain its shape.
Shipping is free. Duty or tax may apply on import depending on the destination, so ask Sofhu how your order will be handled.
