Most Yemeni coffee houses seat guests at ordinary cafe tables and add one majlis-style lounge corner: an L-shaped or single-row floor sofa against a solid wall, with a low table and a rug. Sofhu makes these corners to your wall measurements in your colours, with 32 kg/m³ foam and zipped covers that come off for washing, and ships them free worldwide.

Good Yemeni coffee shop design does two jobs at once. The room has to work as a cafe, with a counter, a queue and tables that turn over. It also has to feel like somewhere a family would sit for two hours over a pot of spiced coffee and a tray of honeycomb bread. The piece that does the second job is usually one majlis-style lounge corner. This guide covers how to plan that corner so it earns its floor space.
Sofhu makes two products that can fill it, and the photos here show both. The Arabic floor sofa is low: a seat mattress near the floor, loose back cushions, armrest blocks, an ottoman and floor pillows. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height and fully upholstered, with a solid base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters.
The lounge corner in a modern Yemeni cafe
One majlis corner, placed where it can be seen from the door, is enough to set the tone for the whole room. Yemeni coffee houses have spread from Dearborn, Michigan to cities across the United States in recent years, and reporting on them describes the same thing each time: alcohol-free places where men, women and families sit together late into the evening. They work as a public sitting room. A majlis corner says that plainly.
The reference point at home is the mafraj or diwan, the sitting room of a Yemeni house where friends and family gather in the afternoon and evening on seating that runs along the walls. A cafe cannot copy that room, and should not try. It borrows three things from it: seating that hugs the wall, a low table within reach of everyone, and enough armrests that people settle in.
The corner in the photo at the top of this page shows the usual recipe: an L-shaped floor sofa, a matching rug and a square ottoman used as a soft centre table. Below is the same set without the rug and ottoman, which is closer to what you would put down in a room with heavy foot traffic.

For the general case of floor seating in cafes and shisha lounges, see Arabic majlis for cafes. This page stays with the Yemeni coffee house.
Sizes next to standard cafe tables
Plan the corner as a band along the wall, not as a block of furniture. Three strips matter, measured outward from the wall:
- The seat. This is fixed once the cushions are cut. As a general guide, classified listings for floor seating sets in the region commonly show seat mattresses 60 to 70 cm deep. That is market data, not a Sofhu specification; your own figure is confirmed in the quote.
- The table zone. Room for a low table or ottoman and for knees and trays. Guests on low seats stretch their legs further than guests on chairs.
- The walkway. The clear path between the lounge and your nearest cafe table. Your local building and accessibility rules set the minimum, so check them before you draw anything.
Two layout points save trouble later. First, floor sofas are not freestanding. The backrests need a wall or another solid surface behind them, so a corner or a straight wall is the natural home. Second, keep the lounge away from the queue line. People waiting for an order will stand over seated guests, and nobody relaxes with a stranger’s bag at head height.
| Position | Works well when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Back corner, L-shape | You want a destination table for groups | Staff sight lines and lighting |
| Window wall, single row | You want the majlis visible from the street | Sun fading and glare on screens |
| Raised platform, U-shape | You have the depth for a shoes-off zone | A step needs clear edges and good light |
Sofhu builds each run from your wall measurements, so odd lengths, columns and radiators are dealt with at the drawing stage. How to measure a room for an L-shaped or U-shaped majlis explains what to write down.

Yemeni patterns and colours
Choose the fabric for your brand first and for heritage second, and be honest about which is which. The navy floor sofa with cream eight-point stars shown here is a Sofhu design, listed on older Sofhu pages under a Yemeni majlis name. We describe it as a Sofhu pattern, not as a documented historic Yemeni textile. What textile historians do record for Yemen is a long reputation for striped and ikat cloth, so a striped band on the backrests or armrests is a well-grounded nod.
Sofhu’s raised majlis sets typically use velvet with gold, silver or bronze accents and geometric or floral motifs, as in the dusty blue example below. In a cafe, three practical rules help:
- Two colours plus one accent. Take them from your cups, menu and signage. A set that repeats the logo colour looks intended.
- Pattern on the vertical faces. Backrests and armrests carry the motif; a calmer seat top shows fewer marks.
- Mid tones over extremes. Cream shows coffee. Solid black shows crumbs, lint and sugar.
The majlis patterns and motifs guide goes through stars, stripes and arabesque in more detail, and the Yemeni diwan and mafraj page describes the home tradition.

Durability and cleaning
A cafe seat takes in a week what a home seat takes in a season, so the filling and the covers matter more than the pattern. Sofhu cushions are filled with 32 DNS polyurethane foam, which means the foam weighs 32 kg per cubic metre. Density tells you how much material is in the cushion, not how hard it feels. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer than light foam. The cushions contain no springs, and on a custom order you can ask for a softer or firmer foam. For commercial seating, firmer is the usual choice.
All covers are zipped and removable, and Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C. In practice that suggests a routine:
- Ask whether spare seat covers can be made with the set, so one can be in the wash while the other is on the floor.
- Brush or vacuum the seat tops at close each day. Sugar and cardamom husks grind into the weave when sat on.
- Blot spills at once. The guide to removing coffee, tea, saffron and henna stains covers the common ones.
- Swap cushions between busy and quiet positions every few weeks so they wear evenly. The set is modular, so pieces of the same size can trade places.
One caution. Rules on furnishings in commercial premises differ by country and city. Sofhu does not publish a fire-safety test report for its fabrics or foam, so ask your inspector or insurer what paperwork they expect and raise it with us before you order. The fabrics page lists the fabric families on offer.
Photo-friendly details
Guests will photograph the corner whether you plan for it or not, so plan for it. Small decisions do most of the work:
- Light from the side or above the wall, not from behind the camera. A lantern or wall lights over the backrests give the fabric depth.
- Something behind the heads. Arched niches, a plaster panel or a framed map of the coffee regions fills the frame above the backrests.
- A proper table. Trays of small cups and a brass pot need a stable, low surface. An ottoman is softer; a low wooden table is steadier for hot drinks.
- A rug that sets the boundary. It tells guests where the lounge begins and whether shoes come off. Decide the shoe rule and put it on a small sign.

The navy majlis above shows the steadier option: two low tables in front of a raised L-shaped set.
Ordering for one shop or several
Send measurements and photos, and ask for a quote. For a single cafe, Sofhu needs the wall lengths, the positions of doors, windows, sockets and radiators, a photo of the space and your colour references. The set is made in Türkiye, vacuum packed and shipped free worldwide. Duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination, so ask before ordering.
If you are fitting out several branches or a franchise, the wholesale majlis sofas page explains how project orders are handled, and custom majlis covers the choices of fabric, layout and foam. For lounges where water pipes are part of the offer, the spacing advice in hookah lounge seating layout applies. When you are ready, get a quote by measurement or message us on WhatsApp.
