A majlis sofa in Chicago takes a different shape depending on where you live. On the North Side it may be one wall of a two-flat living room. In Oak Lawn or Orland Park it may fill a basement. Sofhu makes both from the same starting point, the measurements of your walls, and ships the finished set free from Türkiye. It builds two distinct products, the raised, upholstered Arabic majlis and the low Arabic floor sofa of floor cushions, and both appear on this page.
Match the layout to the Chicago home
Start with the building type, because it decides how much wall you have.
| Home | Usual room | Layout that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Condo or apartment | Combined living and dining room | Single row |
| Two-flat or bungalow | Front room with a bay or large window | L-shape on the inside walls |
| Suburban house | Basement or family room | U-shape |

A single row, like the navy and silver seat above, is a complete majlis in its smallest form. It gives a condo a place to sit low, pray, read or host two friends, and leaves the dining table where it is. The guide to a majlis in a small apartment has plans for rooms of this size, and mixing a majlis with Western furniture covers the shared living room.
The communities behind the demand
Chicagoland has one of the largest Palestinian communities in the United States, concentrated in the southwest suburbs of Bridgeview, Oak Lawn and Orland Park. On the North Side, Assyrian and Arab families, Iraqis among them, live in and around Albany Park and West Ridge, and Devon Avenue is the city’s South Asian strip.
Each group brings its own idea of the guest room. The Iraqi diwaniya is expected to be the largest room in the house. The Levantine madafa is a hall for receiving guests. A South Asian family may call the same kind of room a baithak. Sofhu’s seating serves all of them, and the background is in the pages on the Iraqi diwaniya and the Jordanian and Palestinian madafa. Families in the southwest suburbs will find more on the Bridgeview page.
Suburban basements and family rooms
With three clear walls, a U-shape turns a basement into a guest room that seats a large family at Eid.

The navy set above shows the bare layout, without rug or tables, so you can see how the runs meet at the corners. Seating of either kind is planned against the walls, so measure wall only and leave out stairs, doors and utility closets.

Add a rug, an ottoman and floor cushions, as in this grey and gold floor sofa, and the centre of the room fills in for children and for serving. See basement majlis ideas for ceilings, windows and stairs.
Fabric for hard winters
Chicago winters are long and cold, and the seat should feel warm when you sit down. Choose a fabric with a pile. Sofhu describes its velvet as durable and easy to clean, its chenille as shedding very little, and its suede series as a good option for fall and winter. The existing velvet floor sofas page shows the velvet range.
Winter also means wet boots, salt and heavy coats near the door. Every cover has a zipper and comes off. Sofhu states the covers can be machine washed at 30°C. Deep colours such as burgundy and navy are forgiving, and there are examples in blue majlis ideas. The fabric comparison is in velvet vs linen vs jacquard.
Foam that lasts through daily use
The cushions hold 32 kg/m³ high-density polyurethane foam and no springs. That figure is the weight of a cubic metre of foam. It describes how much material is in the seat, not how hard it feels, and denser foam generally keeps its shape longer than light foam. Sofhu lets you ask for a softer or firmer seat and offers different cushion thicknesses.
Measuring older buildings
Older Chicago buildings rarely have plain rectangular rooms. Measure each wall at floor level, above the baseboard line if the baseboard is deep, and note:
- radiators and baseboard heaters
- bay windows and the angle of each side
- doors, including the swing
- outlets you need to reach
Then send the measurements for a quote with photos, or share them on WhatsApp.
Delivery to Chicago
Sofhu has no store in the city. It is the manufacturer, builds to order and delivers to your door with free shipping. The cushions come vacuum packed in sealed bags; open them by hand and give the foam time to expand. Import duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination, so ask before ordering.
