Friday in a Sharjah apartment: lunch is laid on a cloth on the floor, grandparents on a video call, cousins arriving from two buildings away. The room that handles this well has seating around the edge and an open middle. That is what a majlis sofa in Sharjah is for, and it is why the corner set is the most useful shape here. Sofhu makes it to the length of your own walls in Türkiye and ships it free.
A city of Arab families far from home
Sharjah presents itself as the cultural capital of the Emirates, with a restored heritage quarter, the Heart of Sharjah, and a long list of museums. It is also home to a large Arab expatriate population. Egyptian, Syrian, Jordanian and Sudanese families live here in numbers, and many of the adults commute to Dubai for work.
Each of those homes has its own name and memory for this furniture.
- Egyptian families speak of the qa’da arabi. See Egyptian Arabic seating.
- Syrian families say jalsa arabiya. The older tradition is described on Syrian and Levantine Arabic seating.
- Jordanian and Palestinian families know the madafa, the room of hospitality. See the Jordanian and Palestinian madafa.
- Sudanese families come from a tradition that is mostly raised seating, not floor level. Sudanese salon and diwan seating explains how a floor sofa or a raised majlis relates to it.
The host emirate’s own tradition is on Emirati and Dubai jalsa.
Why the corner set leads
Apartments are the main type of housing in Sharjah. In a living room with one wall given to the balcony door and one to the entrance, two walls are left, and an L uses both.
Sofhu makes the corner set as two products. The Arabic majlis is raised, sofa-height seating built as upholstered units with fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set at floor level, with loose back cushions and armrest blocks.
The majlis at the top of this page shows the shape plainly: light grey velvet with black armrests along two walls, nothing in the middle. The two runs meet in the corner so the L reads as one seat.

The floor sofa is the low version of the same corner. Add a rug and an ottoman and it becomes a place to eat and serve tea. The grey L above has gold medallion back cushions and an ottoman on a white rug.

A floor sofa L can be ordered at four levels, shown in the chart: seating only, with rug, with rug and ottoman, and the full set with floor cushions. Starting with the seating alone is a sensible way to spread the cost. You can add the rest later.
When the room can take more
Some Sharjah flats have a separate guest room, and villas have more wall to work with.

A U-shaped majlis like this one, the light grey design from the top of the page carried round three walls, seats a large family gathering. If you have the walls but not the certainty, order an L first and ask Sofhu to plan it so a third side can be added.
Choosing fabric for a family room
In an apartment the majlis is usually the everyday family room, not a room kept for guests. Choose fabric accordingly.
| If the room is | Consider | Because |
|---|---|---|
| Used all day by children | Patterned chenille or a woven fabric | Sofhu describes chenille as very low shedding and its woven series as non-wrinkling |
| Warm and aired often | Linen | Porous and absorbent, fresh in hot weather |
| Kept for guests | Velvet | Durable, easy to clean, formal |

Pale sets are possible in a family home if the covers come off. The beige velvet majlis above pairs gold-striped backs with a beige rug. Every Sofhu cover is zippered, and Sofhu states the covers can be machine washed at 30°C. The guide to a family majlis with young children has more.
Inside, the cushions are 32 kg/m³ (32 DNS) high-density foam, with no springs. On a custom order you can ask for a softer or firmer feel.
Measuring and ordering from Sharjah
- Decide which walls the set will cover. The backrests need a wall behind them.
- Measure each wall at floor level and note doors, the balcony door and sockets.
- Send the figures with photos of the room.
- Agree design, fabric and quote. The set is then made, vacuum packed and delivered to your door.
Sofhu has no shop or stock in Sharjah. Duties or taxes may apply on import depending on the destination, so ask with your quote. Sofhu’s common questions page covers general points.
The country page is Arabic sofas in the UAE. If you work in Dubai or live next door in Ajman, those pages have their own notes.
When the tape measure is put away, get a quote by measurement or send the numbers on WhatsApp.
