In Al Ain the majlis is usually a room of its own. The city is the inland oasis of Abu Dhabi emirate, known as the Garden City, and many of its Emirati families live in low-rise villas where a majlis room is part of the plan. A majlis sofa for Al Ain is therefore rarely a corner of a living room. It is seating for three walls of a dedicated room, and often a second set for the rest house on the family farm.

Sofhu makes two products for these rooms. The Arabic majlis is raised, sofa-height seating built as upholstered units with fixed backs and arm bolsters, and it is what most of this page shows. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set at floor level with loose back cushions, an ottoman and floor pillows, the more relaxed choice for a rest house or family room.

What an Al Ain majlis room asks of the seating

A dedicated room changes the brief in three ways.

  • The seating runs wall to wall. Guests sit around the perimeter, so the set has to meet the corners cleanly and stop exactly at the door.
  • It has to hold a crowd. Eid mornings, wedding weeks and condolence visits fill every place at once.
  • It is looked at from the door. The run facing the entrance is the one guests see first, so the pattern should be centred on that wall.

Sofhu builds to the measurements you send, which is what makes a wall-to-wall fit possible. The black and gold majlis at the top of this page is a U along three walls of a cream room, with the rug left clear in the centre.

Layouts for villas and rest houses

The U-shape is the natural layout for a majlis room, with an L or a single row for smaller sitting rooms.

This beige velvet majlis closes the U with damask panels on every seat, and its tray-top armrests give each guest a place to set down a cup. For how many people a given wall length holds, see how many people a majlis seats, and for the choice between shapes, L-shape and U-shape majlis layouts.

Floor sofa sets can be ordered in steps: seating only, with a rug, with a rug and ottoman, or as a full set with floor cushions. The chart above shows the four levels on a navy L-shaped floor sofa. A farm rest house that already has carpets may need only the seating.

Sadu and the Emirati look

Sadu weaving is part of Emirati heritage, and the tradition here uses black, white, brown, beige and red in narrow geometric bands. Sofhu’s sadu-pattern upholstery borrows that banding in a woven furnishing fabric, and it is used on the floor sofas. Cream with burgundy reads calm and formal. Red is the stronger, more traditional statement.

A cream rug inside the U makes the whole seating area read as one soft surface.

The cream sadu floor sofa above runs along three walls at floor level with a plain cream rug in the centre. Not every Al Ain family wants sadu. The emerald velvet majlis unit below carries a gold embroidered medallion on the backrest.

It is shown as a single unit, the piece that is repeated along the wall to make a longer run or used on its own in a smaller family sitting room. The style pages on Emirati and Dubai jalsa and the Bedouin majlis and sadu weaving explain where these looks come from.

Dry heat: what it changes

Al Ain is hotter than the coast in summer but much drier. Damp, the main worry in Dubai or Fujairah, matters less inland, so the fabric can be chosen for how the room is used.

RoomFabric to considerWhy
Formal guest majlisVelvetSofhu describes it as durable and easy to clean
Daily family roomChenille or linenLow shedding; linen is porous and fresh in heat
Shaded outdoor seatingOutdoor fabricWater-resistant, wipes clean

Sun is the thing to plan for. Keep seating out of direct sunlight through windows where you can, and ask Sofhu how an outdoor piece should be shaded and stored.

Foam for a room that fills up

Each cushion is filled with 32 kg/m³ (32 DNS) high-density polyurethane foam and contains no springs. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer, which matters in a room where every seat is taken on the same day. On a custom order you can ask for a softer or firmer feel.

Ordering from Al Ain

Sofhu is the manufacturer and has no premises in Al Ain. The process is done at a distance: measurements and photos, a design agreed from pictures or a video call with the designers, then production and free delivery to the door. Sets travel vacuum packed. Duties or taxes may apply on import, so raise that when you ask for the quote.

Families with relatives in Al Buraimi can also look at the existing page on the Arabic sofa in Oman and the style notes on the Omani sablah and majlis. For the Emirates in general, start with Arabic sofas in the UAE. Other city pages cover Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah.

Questions

Before you order

Can you make one set for the men's majlis and another for the family room in the same order?

Yes. Each room is treated as its own project with its own measurements, layout and fabric, and both can be quoted together. Send a labelled sketch for each room so the two sets are not confused, and say whether you want them to match or contrast.

Our majlis room is very long. Is there a limit to the wall length you can cover?

Sofhu builds from the measurements you provide and the seating is modular, so long walls are covered with a run of sections. No maximum is published. Send the full wall lengths and ask Sofhu to propose how the run will be divided.

Is sadu fabric available for an Al Ain majlis?

Sofhu makes floor sofa sets in sadu-pattern fabric, including the cream set with burgundy motifs shown on this page and a red version. These are woven upholstery fabrics in the sadu style, not hand-woven wool. Ask for current colour options with your quote.

Can the foam be made softer for older family members?

On custom orders you can ask for a softer or firmer foam. Density stays at 32 kg/m³ either way, because density is about how well the cushion keeps its shape, not how hard it feels. Sofhu also offers different cushion thicknesses on request.

We live across the border in Al Buraimi. Can you deliver there?

Sofhu ships free worldwide, so an order for Oman is handled the same way as one for the Emirates: measurements, quote, production, delivery to the door. Duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination country, so ask about Oman specifically before ordering.

Does dust from the desert damage the fabric?

Dust is a cleaning matter. Regular vacuuming keeps it out of the weave, and every cover is zippered and removable for a machine wash at 30°C. Sofhu describes its velvet as easy to clean and its chenille as having a very low shedding rate.
