A Norwegian living room is usually compact, warm and used hard from October to April. That suits an Arabic majlis well. Seating along the walls keeps the middle of the room open, seats more people than a three-seater and an armchair, and gives the family one place to gather through the dark months. Sofhu makes raised Arabic majlis sets and low floor sofas in Türkiye, cuts them to the wall measurements you send and ships them free. If you typed arabic majlis Norway hoping to find a shop, the plain answer is that there is none: every set is built to order and delivered to your door.
Who sits on a majlis in Norway
Many of Norway’s Pakistani, Somali, Iraqi, Syrian and Afghan families live in and around Oslo, with Grønland and the eastern Groruddalen suburbs the best-known areas. For these families seating along the walls is not a decorating trend. It is how guests are received at Eid, where a Ramadan evening continues after iftar, and where tea is poured when relatives arrive.
Each household tends to ask for something a little different:
- Afghan families may want a toshak-style set: floor mattresses with loose bolsters that can also be slept on when guests stay over.
- Iraqi families may have the diwaniya in mind, a room set aside for receiving visitors.
- Somali buyers looking for Somali floor seating in Norway often mean an Arabic-style sitting room with matching cushions and bolsters. Our page on Somali Arabic seating explains what to ask for.
- Pakistani households who know low mattress-and-bolster seating from home may prefer a plainer Arabic floor sofa in a single colour.
All of these come out of the same workshop and the same measuring process, as one of two products. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height and fully upholstered, with a solid base, fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is a low set of seat mattresses and loose back cushions.

Layouts that fit apartments and row houses
Homes in Norway’s cities are largely apartments and row houses, where the living room is modest and often shared with a dining table. The layout matters more than the pattern.
| Room | Layout that usually works | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small apartment living room | Single row or short L-shape | Leaves a walkway and space for a table |
| Row-house lounge with one free corner | L-shape | Uses two walls, keeps the window wall clear |
| Separate guest room | U-shape | Three walls of seating, rug in the middle |
Neither a majlis nor a floor sofa is freestanding. Each needs a wall or something solid behind it, so count only the walls you can actually use. Wall-mounted heaters, low window sills and balcony doors all shorten the usable length. Measure each wall at floor level and note where those obstacles sit. The guide to measuring a room for a majlis walks through it, and a majlis in a small apartment covers the tight cases.

Fabric and foam for a long winter
In a cold climate the seat is used for hours at a time, so the filling matters. Sofhu cushions are filled with 32 DNS polyurethane foam, which means the foam weighs 32 kg per cubic metre. Density tells you how much material is in the cushion, not how hard it feels. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer than light foam, which is what you want from a seat that carries a family every evening. On custom orders you can ask for a softer or firmer feel, and the cushions contain no springs.
For the covers, Sofhu’s velvet and chenille have a pile that feels warm to the touch, and Sofhu describes its suede series as a good option for autumn and winter. Linen is cooler and more breathable, which some families prefer in a well-heated flat. Whatever you choose, the covers are zippered and removable.
Arabic sofa set delivery to Norway
Sets are vacuum packed for transport, which makes the parcels smaller than the finished seating and easier to carry up a stairwell. Once the sealed bags are opened the foam expands back to shape. Open them by hand rather than with a blade. The article on how a majlis is packed and delivered describes the steps.
Shipping is free. Customs is a separate matter. Norway belongs to the European Economic Area but is not an EU member, so a shipment from Türkiye is cleared through Norwegian customs rather than under EU rules. Import duty or tax may apply depending on the destination, and Sofhu has not published how this is handled for Norway. Ask before you order.
What to send for a quote
A quote for a majlis sofa in Norway starts with four things:
- The length of each wall the seating will run along, in centimetres.
- The position of doors, heaters and windows on those walls.
- A photo of the room.
- The layout, colour and fabric you have in mind, or a photo of a set you like.
Send them through the quote form or on WhatsApp. Sofhu’s designers can go through the plan with you by video call before anything is cut. If you live in the capital, the Oslo page has more on apartment layouts there.
