Where can you buy a majlis sofa in Oslo? Not in a shop. Sofhu is a manufacturer in Türkiye and has no premises in Norway, so nothing sits in stock waiting on a shelf in the city. What you get instead is a set cut to your own walls: you send the measurements, Sofhu builds the seating, and it is shipped free to your address. For most Oslo flats that is the better route anyway, because a ready-made set rarely matches the wall it has to fill.
Arabic seating in Oslo’s east side
Oslo’s Pakistani, Somali, Iraqi and Kurdish communities are concentrated in the inner-east district of Grønland, with its halal shops, mosques and Middle Eastern restaurants, and further out in Groruddalen and Søndre Nordstrand. In these homes the sitting room is where guests are fed, where Eid visits happen and where the evening goes on after iftar.
Tastes differ from family to family. Some households want seating around the full edge of the room for visitors; our pages on the Kurdish diwan and on seating plans for iftar and Eid cover both the tradition and the head count. People asking for Somali floor seating in Oslo often mean a co-ordinated Arabic sitting room, with cushions, bolsters and curtains in one fabric. Others prefer something quieter that sits comfortably beside a television and a dining table.

Sofhu makes two products for these rooms. An Arabic majlis, like the light grey set above, is raised to sofa height on an upholstered base, with tall fixed backs and arm bolsters. An Arabic floor sofa is the low one: a seat mattress at floor level with loose back cushions, armrest blocks and usually a matching ottoman. Two floor sofas, in grey kilim and taupe medallion fabric, close the gallery on this page.
Making it fit an Oslo apartment
Oslo apartments tend to have compact living rooms, and the usable wall is shorter than it looks once you subtract the balcony door, the heater and the door swing. Three rules keep an order out of trouble:
- Count solid walls only. Neither a majlis nor a floor sofa is planned to stand free. The seating needs a wall behind it, so a run cannot float across a room or stop in front of a full-height window.
- Pick the layout before the fabric. An L-shape in the corner furthest from the door is the usual answer for a flat. A U-shape works when the room is a separate guest room. The page on L-shape and U-shape layouts compares them.
- Decide the cushion thickness. Sofhu offers different thicknesses. A thicker seat is easier for older relatives to get up from; a thinner one keeps the room looking open.
For rooms that are truly small, read a majlis in a small apartment before you measure.

Colours and fabrics that suit the light
Winter daylight in Oslo is short, and a dark set can make a small room feel smaller. Pale grey, cream and beige with a darker base reflect what light there is; the grey-and-black set at the top of this page is a good example. Our beige, cream and grey majlis ideas show more rooms in that range.
For warmth under the hand, velvet and chenille are the usual choices, and Sofhu describes its suede series as suited to the colder months. Every cover has a zip and comes off for washing.

Inside the covers is 32 DNS foam, meaning 32 kg per cubic metre, with no springs. Higher density foam generally holds its shape longer than light foam, which matters for seating that is used every evening. You can ask for a softer or firmer feel when you order.
Ordering from Oslo
- Measure each wall at floor level and mark doors, heaters and sockets.
- Photograph the room from the doorway.
- Send both through the quote form or WhatsApp, with the layout you want.
- Agree fabric and details with Sofhu’s designers, by video call if you like.
Shipping is free. Because Norway is outside the EU customs union, duty or tax may apply when the shipment arrives, and Sofhu has not published the details for Norway, so ask before you confirm. Delivery, customs and care for the whole country are covered on the Norway page, and the full range of complete sets is on the majlis sofa set page.
