Choosing fabric when you cannot touch it
Buying from a distance is easier once you know how a majlis fabric scheme is put together. Several of Sofhu’s patterned chenille fabrics, for example, are shown as one colourway in a few coordinating cloths. A typical scheme uses them like this.
- A large medallion fabric for the seat tops and backrests, where the motif has room to show.
- A smaller repeat of the same design for armrests and loose cushions.
- A striped or banded fabric for bolsters and borders.
- A plain cloth in the same colour for the base and sides.

Looking after a set in the Waikato climate
The Waikato climate is mild and damp. Upholstery copes well as long as it can breathe.
Air the room on dry days. Stand the seat cushions of a floor sofa on edge from time to time, especially along an outside wall. Take the covers off when they need it: they are zippered, and Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C. Make sure a cover is fully dry before it goes back on the foam. Chenille and velvet feel warm through a damp winter. Linen is the cooler, more absorbent choice for a sunny room.
Starting with one row
You do not have to fill a room on the first order. A single row along one wall, like the burgundy velvet seat at the top of this page, gives a flat or a spare room a proper place to receive guests. Because the sets are modular, an L-shape or a U-shape can grow from it later.
About the foam
The cushions are filled with 32 kg/m³ polyurethane foam, which Sofhu calls 32 DNS. The figure describes density, the amount of foam material in the cushion, and denser foam generally keeps its shape longer. Firmness is a separate matter, and a softer or firmer seat can be requested. The cushions have no springs.
