Amman is built on high hills, well above the Jordan Valley. That one fact changes what a majlis sofa in Amman should be made of. Winters here are cold and now and then bring snow, so the thin, cool sets designed for the Gulf are the wrong starting point. You want dense foam under you and a fabric with some weight.
Sofhu makes each set to order in Türkiye, to the measurements of your room, and delivers it free.
Two different products are on offer, and they sit at different heights. The Arabic majlis, shown in the photographs here, is a raised, fully upholstered set at sofa height with fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is a seat mattress at floor level with loose back cushions and armrest blocks. Either can be made for an Amman room.
Build for January, not for July
Arabic seating is used most on winter evenings, when the family gathers in one heated room. Three choices make that room comfortable.
- Dense foam. Sofhu fills its cushions with 32 DNS foam: 32 kg per cubic metre, no springs. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer, which matters for a seat that is used every evening.
- A thicker seat if you want one. On a floor sofa the cushion thickness is selectable, and a majlis lifts you off a cold floor altogether. Ask for the options with your quote.
- A heavier cover. Velvet, chenille and suede are the winter fabrics. Linen is pleasant in August and thin in January.
Summer still matters, and Amman’s is dry, not humid, so a velvet set does not become sticky the way it can on the coast. The fabric comparison guide sets the options side by side.

The jalsa arabiya next to the salon
In Amman, villas and larger apartments often keep a formal salon and add a jalsa arabiya as a second room, or as a corner of a larger one. The two should not compete.
If the salon is classic, with carved wood and brocade, a plain or two-tone set keeps the Arabic room calm. If the salon is modern and grey, the jalsa is where pattern and colour can go. In a shared room, an L-shape in the corner farthest from the sofas keeps the two groups apart and leaves one rug between them. There is more on this in Arabic sofa sets: styles and sizes.

Roof corners and terraces
A roof corner or terrace with a view over the hills is a natural place for a low seating area. For this Sofhu makes outdoor seating, including wooden bench-frame sets with cushions. The fabrics are described as water-resistant: spills wipe away and light rain is not a problem. They are not sold as a promise against a winter left outdoors, so plan to bring cushions in. Ideas for small outdoor spaces are in the balcony, patio and rooftop guide.

One city, several traditions
Amman is home to large communities of Palestinian, Iraqi and Syrian origin alongside Jordanian families, and each grew up with a slightly different guest room. Because Sofhu builds per order, the differences can be respected.
- Families with roots in Jordan and Palestine can start from the madafa seating guide.
- Those from Damascus, Aleppo or Homs may prefer the low, continuous sofa described under Syrian and Levantine Arabic seating.
- Iraqi households, for whom the guest room is expected to be the largest in the house, can look at the Iraqi diwaniya.
Majlis sofa Amman: measuring a room on a slope
Hillside buildings produce odd rooms: a wall that angles away, a step down into a sitting area, a window that starts low. None of this is a problem for made-to-measure seating, but it has to be on the drawing.
Measure each wall at floor level. Mark radiators and heater points, since upholstery should not sit against a hot surface. Note where a low window sill sits, because the loose backrests of a floor sofa lean on the wall and need solid support behind them, and the fixed back of a majlis should finish below the sill. Then photograph the room from the door.
