Balcony, Patio and Rooftop Floor Seating Ideas for Small Spaces

Turn a balcony, patio or rooftop into an outdoor majlis: space-saving layouts, shade, cushions you can carry in, and seasonal storage.

Three wooden benches with red kilim cushions arranged in a U around a stone table on a covered back patio
The short answer

A balcony majlis works when the seating runs along the longest solid wall, the walking path to the door stays clear, and the cushions can be carried indoors. On a narrow balcony use a single row; on a patio or rooftop use an L or U of benches. Sofhu makes outdoor bench sets, folding Arabic sunbeds and floor cushions to your measurements.

Start with a tape measure, not a mood board. Balcony floor seating succeeds or fails on a few centimetres: whether the door still opens, whether two people can pass, whether the cushions fit through the door when it rains. Once those are settled, a balcony, a patio or a flat roof becomes the place where tea is taken after maghrib and where guests drift when the living room gets warm. These ideas are for small spaces, and they sit alongside Sofhu’s wider guide to outdoor majlis seating. One point on names: Sofhu’s indoor products are the raised, upholstered Arabic majlis and the low cushion Arabic floor sofa. Outdoors the work is done by different pieces: wooden bench sets, the folding Arabic sunbed and loose floor cushions.

Measuring a balcony before you plan

Measure the space you can use, which is smaller than the space you can see.

  1. Length of the solid wall. This is where the seat goes. Measure skirting to skirting, and note anything fixed to it: a tap, a socket, an air-conditioning unit, a downpipe.
  2. Clear depth. Measure from that wall to the inside face of the railing or parapet.
  3. The door. Mark which way it opens and how far the leaf swings. A sliding door frees more floor than a hinged one.
  4. Railing type and height. A masonry parapet can take a backrest. A glass or metal railing cannot be leaned on by a cushion, and children should not be able to climb from a seat to the top of it.
  5. Drain and slope. Find the floor drain. Nothing should sit on it.
  6. Cover. Note how far the balcony above or the roof overhang reaches. The dry strip is where cushions live.

Then subtract a walking path. If one person cannot walk from the door to the far end without turning sideways, the seat is too deep for the space. Send these figures and a few photos with your request; the method is the same as in how to measure a room for a majlis. Ask your building management about any rules on balcony furniture before ordering.

Balcony floor seating layouts for narrow spaces

The shape of the floor chooses the layout for you.

SpaceLayoutWhy
Long, narrow balconySingle row on the house wallKeeps the path; everyone faces the view
Balcony with a deeper endShort L at the deep endMakes a corner for two without blocking the door
Square patio or courtyardL in the sheltered cornerLeaves the open side for plants and passage
Rooftop, deck or terraceU of benches around a rugA complete outdoor room for the family

The single row. One run of seat with backrests against the wall and an armrest at each end. Put the tray table at the end, not in front. Indoors the same idea furnishes a corridor-like room, and it carries straight over to a balcony.

The short L. Where the balcony widens, turn the row along the end wall. Two people can face each other across a tray, which is how conversation works.

The U on a roof or patio. Three benches around a rug and a low table make a rooftop majlis that seats the household. On open roofs a framed bench is the better choice, because there may be no wall to lean a floor cushion on. All three shapes are explained in L-shape and U-shape majlis layouts.

Shade, wind and privacy

An outdoor seat that is too bright, too windy or too overlooked does not get used.

  • Shade. Fabric lasts longer and people stay longer out of direct afternoon sun. A fixed awning, a pergola or the balcony above does the job. On a roof, a shade sail or a simple tent roof turns the seating into an evening room.
  • Wind. Light cushions lift in a gust, especially on upper floors and roofs. Seat against the wind-sheltered wall, keep throw pillows few, and bring loose pieces in when you leave.
  • Privacy. Sitting low already helps: a seated person on floor cushions is below most parapets. Where the railing is open, a reed or fabric screen fixed to the inside gives the family room to sit comfortably. Tall planters do the same on a patio.
  • Heat. In hot climates a linen or woven cover is cooler against the skin than velvet. Dark fabric in full sun gets hot to the touch.

Carry-in cushions and storage

Plan for the cushions to come indoors. Sofhu describes its outdoor seating as water-resistant, with spills that wipe away and fabric that copes with light rain and moisture. It does not describe it as proof against a downpour, and nothing has been published about leaving sets outside through snow or frost. So treat the frame as outdoor furniture and the cushions as guests.

Most outdoor floor cushion ideas come down to easy handling:

  • Fewer, larger pieces. One seat and one backrest per person-width is quicker to carry than a pile of small pillows.
  • A dry home indoors. A shelf, a bench with a lid, or the space under a bed. Dry everything fully before stacking.
  • The folding sunbed. Sofhu makes a portable Arabic sunbed: a padded mat that folds, with a backrest that stands on its own frame. It opens on a balcony, a lawn or a beach and goes back in a cupboard.
  • Loose floor cushions. A few floor cushions add places for children without adding furniture.

The beige sunbed doubles as a beach lounger, with the armrest block as an elbow rest.

For winter, wash the covers, dry them, and store the cushions inside until the season returns. Sofhu’s existing page on outdoor sofas, benches and mats shows the range.

Lighting and rugs

A rug and a lamp turn a seat into a room.

Rugs. Choose a flat weave that dries fast and can be shaken over the railing. Size it so the front edge of the seating rests on it and it stops short of the drain. A patterned kilim in the cushion colours makes a small balcony look planned. The sizing rules in what size rug goes with a majlis apply outdoors too.

Lighting. Keep it low and warm. Lanterns on the floor or the parapet, a string of lights under the overhang, or one wall lamp on a dimmer. Low seating wants low light; a bright ceiling fitting flattens the mood and attracts insects. Use fittings rated for outdoor use and keep cables away from the walking line.

A surface for the tray. One small low table or a firm ottoman is enough. On a narrow balcony a wide parapet or a wall shelf at seated elbow height replaces the table altogether.

Ordering small outdoor Arabic seating

Small outdoor Arabic seating is still made to measure. Sofhu is the manufacturer, builds each set in Türkiye from the measurements you send, and ships free worldwide. Send the wall length, the clear depth, the door position and photos, and say whether you want cushions on the floor, wooden benches or a folding sunbed. Duties or taxes may apply depending on your country, so ask before ordering.

Questions

Before you order

Can I put a majlis on a balcony?

Yes, if there is a solid wall to seat against and the floor drains and stays dry. Floor seats need something firm behind them, so a glass or open railing will not do as a backrest. Check your building's rules on what may be kept on a balcony, and plan to bring the cushions inside when the weather turns.

How do I protect outdoor cushions from rain?

Sofhu describes its outdoor fabrics as water-resistant and able to handle light rain and moisture, with spills wiping away. That is not the same as leaving them in a storm. Stand cushions on edge under cover after a shower so they dry on both faces, and carry them in before heavy rain or a long absence.

What layout suits a narrow balcony?

A single row along the house wall, with a small tray table at one end and nothing in the walking line. Everyone faces outward, which is the point of a balcony. If the balcony is deep enough at one end, turn the row into a short L there and keep the door end clear.

Where do I store outdoor cushions?

Indoors, dry and off the floor: a wardrobe shelf, under a bed, or a lidded bench in the hallway. Make sure the cushions are fully dry before they are stacked. If storage is tight, tell Sofhu when you ask for a quote, because cushion thickness and the number of pieces decide how much shelf you need.

What rug works outdoors?

A flat-woven rug that dries quickly and can be shaken out, sized to sit just inside the seating so the front edge of each seat rests on it. Lift it after rain so water does not sit underneath. A kilim pattern in the colours of the cushions ties a small balcony together without adding furniture.

Do I need a wooden frame or can cushions go straight on the floor?

Both work. Cushions on the floor suit a covered, dry balcony and are the easiest to carry in. A wooden bench lifts the seat off a deck or paving that gets wet and gives a firmer back, which helps where there is no wall. Sofhu makes its outdoor frames by hand in wood.
