A sheikh in Anbar once put it this way: when a family builds a house, it thinks first of the diwaniya, which must be big, even if everyone then has to sleep in one room. That is the order of priorities across much of Iraq. The guest room comes first, and it is furnished wall to wall. An Arabic majlis for Iraq from Sofhu is made for that room: built in Türkiye to your measurements and shipped free, with delivery to your city confirmed before you order.
Diwaniya, mudhif, diwan: one room, several names
Iraqi hospitality has more than one word for the place where guests sit. In houses across the centre and west it is the diwaniya. In the southern marshes it is the mudhif, the great arched hall of reed kept by the sheikh for guests, weddings, funerals and the settling of disputes; UNESCO inscribed the craft of building it in 2023. In the Kurdistan Region the guest house of a leading family is the diwan or diwan-khane, where men gather over tea.
The furniture follows the same logic in all three. Seating lines the walls, guests face each other, and the middle of the floor is left open. The pages on the Iraqi diwaniya and mudhif and the Kurdish diwan describe each tradition. Readers who know the Kuwaiti form will recognise a great deal on the Kuwaiti diwaniya page.
Two facing rows or a full U
The mudhif plan is two long rows of cushions along the walls with the coffee hearth on the axis between them. A long guest room can be furnished the same way.

Which layout to order depends on the shape of the room:
- Long and narrow, door at one end: two facing rows. Nobody sits with their back to the entrance and the passage stays clear.
- Nearly square: a U on three walls, with the host’s place on the wall facing the door.
- A family sitting room: an L in the corner, with floor cushions added on feast days.
Armrest bolsters between places are part of a Sofhu set. How many you put along a run decides how many people it holds. The guide on how many people a majlis seats explains the trade-off, and the L-shape and U-shape page shows the corner details.

Majlis, floor sofa, or a wooden frame
Sofhu makes two different products for this room. The Arabic majlis is the formal choice for a diwaniya: raised, sofa-height units with an upholstered base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is low: a firm seat mattress near the floor with loose back cushions, an ottoman and floor pillows, like the kilim set above. The set at the top of this page is a third look, a majlis on a white wooden frame with navy velvet cushions. No heights are published; describe what you want and it will be quoted.
A floor sofa is not freestanding. Each run needs a wall behind it.
Fabric for an Iraqi summer
Summers in Iraq are extremely hot, and much of the country is dusty. Guest rooms are cooled, but fabric still has to breathe and has to clean easily.
- Sofhu describes its linen floor sofas as moisture-absorbing and fresh in hot weather.
- Woven and chenille covers in a mid tone hide dust between washes.
- Velvet suits a formal diwaniya that is air-conditioned whenever it is in use.
All covers are zippered, and Sofhu states they wash in a machine at 30°C. The series are listed on its fabrics page.

The foam
The seats are 32 DNS polyurethane foam, which means 32 kg per cubic metre, and they contain no springs. Density measures how much material is in the cushion; it does not tell you how hard it is. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer than light foam, which counts in a room that seats a full gathering several times a week. You can ask for a softer or firmer feel.
Arabic sofa set delivery to Iraq
Sofhu ships free worldwide and packs each set vacuum-sealed. Türkiye and Iraq share a border, and road freight through the Kurdistan Region is a major trade route between them, so Erbil, Duhok and Sulaymaniyah are the most straightforward destinations. That is geography, not a delivery promise. For any city, and especially further south, ask Sofhu to confirm that it can deliver to your address and how customs would be handled. Duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination.
