On Sonnenallee you can buy sweets, a wedding dress and the week’s groceries from Arab shopkeepers. What the street does not sell is seating cut to your own living room. An Arabic majlis in Neukölln, Berlin, has to be ordered, and Sofhu makes it to measure in Türkiye and ships it free to your door.
A street that knows what a majlis is
Sonnenallee is widely known as Berlin’s Arab street. Lebanese, Palestinian and Syrian restaurants, sweet shops, grocers, bridal shops and shisha cafés run along it, and the street grew further with Syrian arrivals after 2015. Nobody here needs the word jalsa explained.
The seating these families remember is Levantine. In the old houses of Damascus the reception room had a raised area lined with a low sofa and cushions, and guests left their shoes below. In villages across Jordan and Palestine the family guest hall is the madafa. Today’s version, the jalsa arabiya, is a set of floor mattresses, backrests and armrests. Sofhu builds it two ways: as a raised, upholstered Arabic majlis, the kind shown in the photographs here, and as a low Arabic floor sofa of floor mattresses and loose cushions. The style pages on Syrian and Levantine Arabic seating and the Jordanian and Palestinian madafa go into each, and the Arabic jalsa hub shows Sofhu’s sets.

Measuring a pre-war flat
The flats around Sonnenallee are classic pre-war tenement apartments. Rooms in buildings of that age were not designed around a sofa catalogue, so a made-to-measure set earns its keep. Seating runs along the walls, and a floor sofa must lean on one. Work round the room in this order.
- Measure every wall at floor level, not at eye height. Skirting boards and old plaster change the figure.
- Mark each door and note which way it opens. Connecting doors between rooms count as well.
- Note stoves, radiators and pipes, and how far they stand out from the wall.
- Measure from the floor to the window sill wherever a backrest will sit under a window.
- Photograph each wall straight on.
The step-by-step guide on how to measure a room for a majlis has diagrams. In a one-room or two-room flat, a single row or an L-shape usually serves better than a full U; see a majlis in a small apartment.
Seating for cafés and shisha lounges
The cafés and shisha lounges on and around the street are the other natural home for a majlis. Commercial seating has a harder life than a living room set, and three things matter most.
- Foam. Sofhu uses 32 kg/m³ high-density foam with no springs. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer under daily use.
- Covers. Every cover is zippered and removable, so a marked cover can be washed without closing a booth.
- Layout. Each alcove is cut to its own walls, and one design can repeat through the room.

Sofhu’s existing page on the Arabic majlis for cafés and shisha cafés covers commercial use. For spacing between groups, read the hookah lounge seating layout guide, and for larger orders see wholesale majlis and Arabic sofas.
Fabric, trim and the details up close
A majlis is judged at arm’s length, where the hand rests. Velvet gives a deep colour and a soft surface. A woven jacquard base takes knocks from shoes and vacuum cleaners better than plain cloth. Piping, tassels and contrast armrests are chosen per order.

Sofhu states that covers can be machine washed at 30°C. In a home with children or a lounge with coals, that single fact decides more than the colour does.
Delivery to Neukölln and the next step
