Perth is a city that lives half outdoors, and that changes what people ask of a majlis sofa. Perth buyers want a cool, easy-care set for the lounge and, quite often, a second run of seating for the alfresco. Sofhu makes both in Türkiye, to the measurements you send, and ships them free to Western Australia. Nothing is held in stock locally. Each order is built for one home.
A long history of sitting low in Perth
Perth’s Muslim community goes back more than a century, to the Afghan cameleers who built the city’s first mosque in the early 1900s. Today the community is far more varied. Afghan, Iraqi, Somali, Malay and Indonesian families live across the metropolitan area, and each brings its own habit of hosting.
For an Afghan household the starting point is the toshak, the long floor mattress with loose cushions behind it, described on our Afghan toshak page. Iraqi families may be thinking of the diwaniya, covered under Iraqi diwaniya seating. Somali families can read how Sofhu approaches their sitting rooms on the Somali Arabic seating page. Whatever the name, the order begins the same way, with the walls of your room.
Sofhu makes two products to choose from. The Arabic majlis, shown in the photos on this page, is raised to sofa height and fully upholstered, with a solid base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is the low one, a seat mattress on the floor with loose back cushions, and it is the closer match to a toshak.

Choosing an Arabic sofa for a Perth lounge
Summers in Perth are hot and dry, so the lounge has to stay cool and easy to clean. Three things follow from that.
- Pick the cover for the heat. Sofhu describes its linen as porous and refreshing in hot weather. Velvet and chenille are richer to look at and suit an air-conditioned formal lounge.
- Think about the sun. Strong light through a west-facing window fades most furnishing fabrics over time. Place the longest run on the shaded wall if you can, and keep blinds or sheers in mind.
- Plan a rug. On tiles or polished concrete a rug in the centre softens the room and gives children somewhere comfortable to sit. See what size rug goes with a majlis.
Covers on the indoor sets are zippered and removable, and Sofhu states they can be washed in a machine at 30°C. The full fabric comparison is in velvet vs linen vs jacquard, and the wider range is on the Arabic sofa sets page.

An outdoor majlis for the alfresco
Sofhu makes outdoor sofas and benches with wooden frames, and it describes the fabrics as water-resistant: spills wipe away, and the seating can handle light rain and moisture. That suits a roofed alfresco or a patio under a pergola, where guests sit out on summer evenings and through Ramadan nights.
Be realistic about full exposure. Sofhu has not published how its outdoor fabric stands up to long periods of direct sun, so ask about the fabric for your particular spot when you request the quote, and keep the cushions under cover when nobody is using them. The outdoor majlis hub explains the options, balcony and patio majlis ideas deals with smaller spaces, and the current outdoor range is shown on the existing outdoor sofas and benches page.
The foam under the fabric
Every seat is filled with 32 kg/m³ polyurethane foam, which the Turkish trade writes as 32 DNS. That number is the density, the weight of one cubic metre of foam. It is a measure of how much material is in the cushion, and denser foam generally keeps its shape and support longer than lighter foam. It does not tell you how hard the seat feels, and you can ask for a softer or firmer cushion on a custom order. There are no springs or metal parts inside.

Getting a set to Western Australia
Distance does not change the arrangement: shipping to Perth is free, as it is everywhere else. The set is vacuum packed in sealed bags to reduce its volume then delivered to your door by cargo carrier. When the bags arrive, open them without a blade and give the foam time to expand.
Duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination. Ask Sofhu how an Australian order is handled before you pay, and read importing a majlis to Australia. The existing page on Arabic sofas in Australia covers the country as a whole, and the Western Australia page covers the state.
What Sofhu needs from you
Measure each wall where seating will go, at floor level. Note doors, sliding doors to the alfresco, and any air-conditioning units or vents. Take a few photos. Decide roughly whether you want a single row, an L-shape or a U-shape, and which colours you lean towards. Send it all through get a quote by measurement or on WhatsApp, and the price is worked out from there.
