Egyptians call it a qa’da arabi (قعدة عربي). Gulf families say majlis or jalsa. In a Jersey City apartment it comes to the same request: Arabic seating along the wall that does not swallow the room. Sofhu makes a majlis sofa to the exact length of your wall in Türkiye and ships it free to Jersey City. It keeps two products apart: the Arabic majlis shown on this page, raised to sofa height and fully upholstered with a solid base and fixed backs, and the Arabic floor sofa, a low set of seat mattresses and loose back cushions.

Qa’da arabi, jalsa or majlis sofa: Jersey City uses all three

The name depends on where your family is from. Jersey City has a large Egyptian community, many of them Coptic Christians, with Journal Square as its best-known centre. A short walk away, Newark Avenue holds one of the biggest South Asian commercial strips in the region, known as India Square. In both communities there are households where sitting low with guests is ordinary, whether on Arabic cushions or on floor mattresses and bolsters.

For the Egyptian tradition, read Egyptian Arabic seating. There is also an Arabic-language page, قعدة عربي.

Layouts that save space in an apartment

In a small room, less seating placed well beats a full perimeter. Most Jersey City homes are apartments and row houses, where the living room also has to hold a television, a dining table and the path to the kitchen.

A single module like the beige one above shows how little floor a row needs. The seating must stand against a wall, so measure only wall that is truly free, between the radiator and the door frame if need be. A majlis in a small apartment has worked examples, and how many backrests and armrests you need helps with the count.

Removable covers earn their keep

In a home where one room does everything, covers that come off are the feature you will use most. Every Sofhu cover has a zipper. The site states they can be machine washed at 30°C, which suits a building laundry room as well as a machine at home.

Two habits help. Wash covers one or two at a time so the seating stays usable, and dry them completely before refitting. With small children, patterned and mid-tone fabrics show less between washes. More on that in a family majlis with young children.

Living with a Western sofa in the same room

You do not have to choose between the two. Many apartments keep a regular couch facing the television and add an Arabic row on another wall for guests and tea. Keep the colours related, for example beige and gold against a neutral sofa, and the room reads as one.

For a sharper look, black velvet with cream striped backs works well with dark floors and metal-framed furniture.

The article on mixing a majlis with Western furniture goes into proportions, and modern Arabic sofas shows plainer designs. Fabric series are listed on the fabrics page.

What is inside the cushions

Sofhu fills the seats with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam and no springs. The number is density, the weight of foam per cubic metre. Denser foam generally keeps its height longer under daily use, which matters when the same seat serves breakfast, homework and evening guests. Firmness is a separate choice, and you can ask for softer or harder.

How to order from Jersey City

Sofhu builds to order and delivers to your door, so the process starts with a tape measure.

  1. Measure the free wall or walls at floor level.
  2. Photograph the room from two angles.
  3. Send both through get a quote or WhatsApp, with the colours you like.

The set arrives vacuum packed, and the foam recovers once you open the bags by hand. Shipping is free. Import duty or tax may apply under United States rules, so ask about it with your quote.

Questions

Before you order

Is a qa'da arabi different from a majlis?

Qa'da arabi is the Egyptian way of saying Arabic seating, and majlis is the Gulf word for the guest room and its furniture. What you sit on is the same kind of seating: a seat along the wall, a backrest and armrests. Tell Sofhu the look you have in mind and the name will not matter.

Can I keep my regular sofa and add a small Arabic corner?

Yes. A single row along one free wall, or a short L-shape in a corner, sits comfortably beside a Western sofa and gives you a place for tea, guests or prayer-time quiet. Send the length of the free wall and a photo so the piece is sized to it.

Will the delivery fit in my building's elevator or up a walk-up stair?

A set is made of separate cushions, and Sofhu vacuum packs them in sealed bags, so there is no single large frame to carry. Mention the floor you live on and whether there is an elevator when you request the quote.

Can the seating double as a bed for visiting family?

A majlis is built for sitting. Sofhu's low floor sofa has a long flat seat mattress, and many families use that for overnight guests. If that matters in a one- or two-bedroom apartment, say so and ask for a floor sofa. Cushion thickness and firmness can be chosen on a custom order to suit both sitting and sleeping.

My lease does not allow fixing anything to the walls. Is that an issue?

No. Nothing is screwed or mounted. The set stands on the floor against the wall, and Sofhu notes that its legless design does not scratch floors. The whole set lifts out when you move.

Does Sofhu have a shop near Journal Square?

No. Sofhu has no shop or stock in New Jersey. It is the manufacturer and makes each set to order in Türkiye, then ships it free to your address. Design and measurements are handled by message, photos and video call.
